Cadmium is a dangerous occupational and environmental toxin. It accumulates in the human organism mainly in liver and kidneys. Cadmium half-life is about 10 years, so the symptoms of cadmium intoxication may occur several years after the exposure. Until now in treating intoxication with this metal chelating compounds have been used, burdened with numerous undesirable symptoms. In our investigations anthocyanins from Aronia melanocarpa were used to reduce the harmful results caused by cadmium. Administering anthocyanins with cadmium chloride resulted in a statistically significant decrease of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, concentration of bilirubin and urea in blood serum and decreased cadmium cumulation in liver and kidneys in relation to animals receiving cadmium chloride only.

Introduction. Alcoholic acute pancreatitis occurs in 10% of alcoholics, who take more than 80g alcohol daily. Different biochemical markers are used to diagnose acute pancreatitis, and some of them may help in establishing etiology of acute pancreatitis. Material and Methods. This study is a prospective review of 21 patients. All patients were hospitalized at the Department for Gastroenterology and Hepatology or at the Department for Surgery of the Clinical Centre of Nis in the period from August 1st 2009 to March 1st 2010 with diagnosis of acute alcoholic pancreatitis. Detailed anamnesis, clinical examination, biochemical analyses and ultrasonography of the upper abdomen were done in all patients. All patients provided data on alcohol abuse. Results. The analysis of the corresponding biochemical parameters revealed a statistically significant correlation between the following values: serum amylase and serum lipase (R=0.964674; p<0.001), cholesterol and triglycerides (R=0.93789; p<0.001), total and direct bilirubin (R=0.857899; p<0.001) and between aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase (R=0.824461, p<0.001) in patients with alcoholic acute pancreatitis. In addition, there was a statistically significant correlation between the values of serum amylase and urinary amylase (R=0.582742, p<0.001). Discussion. The analysis of biochemical markers showed that some of them were significant for beforehand diagnosis of alcoholic acute pancreatitis, which is in accordance with other studies. Conclusion Some biochemical parameters can be potential predictors of alcoholic acute pancreatitis (lipase/amylase ratio >2, greater ratio of aspartate aminotransferase/ alanine aminotransferase, enhanced triglycerides and values of mean corpuscular volume.

Abstract Purpose: Environmental and occupational exposure to cadmium chloride is known to cause nephrotoxicity linked with oxidative stress in humans and animals. This study used Atorvastatin to examine its effect on cadmium chloride-induced nephrotoxicity in rat model using biochemical and histological methodologies.Methods: Experiments were performed on 56 adult male Wistar rats (200 ±20 g), randomly assigned to eight groups. Atorvastatin was administered by oral for 15 days at 20 mg/kg/day, started 7 days before cadmium chloride intraperitoneal administration (1, 2, and 3 mg/kg) for eight days. On day 16, blood samples were collected, and kidneys were excised to evaluate the biochemical and histopathological changes.Cadmium chloride significantly increased malondialdehyde (MDA), serum creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels. Results: Administration of Atorvastatin (20 mg/kg) significantly improved lipid peroxidation, glutathione and activities of antioxidant enzymes and significantly decreased BUN and Creatinine. Atorvastatin clearly improved the histological changes, demonstrating its protective role against Cadmium chloride-induced kidney injury.Conclusion: Treatment with Atorvastatin significantly improves all biochemical parameters and suggests a protecting role against cadmium chloride-induced oxidative stress and histological changes in rat kidney.

Background. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity was measured not only to detect liver disease, but also to monitor overall health. The purpose of this study was to obtain the prevalence of elevated ALT levels among adolescents. Methods. In a school-based cross-sectional study, a representative sample was analyzed from 9 middle and high schools in Shenzhen, China, during 2017 to 2018. Elevated ALT was defined as diagnostic criterion I (>30 U/L for boys and >19 U/L for girls) and diagnostic criterion II (>40 U/L). Results. From the adolescent population, a total of 7281 students (boys, 4014, and girls, 3267) aged from 10 to 17 years were collected. The prevalence of elevated ALT was 7.11% (6.88% for boys and 7.41% for girls) by criterion I and 2.72% (3.96% for boys and 1.19% for girls) by criterion II. Based on the Shenzhen census and Chinese national census population, the adjusted prevalence of elevated ALT was 7.65% (boys 7.19% and girls 8.21%) and 6.79% (boys 6.07% and girls 7.56%) by criterion I and 2.85% (boys 4.20% and girls 1.16%) and 2.43% (boys 3.49% and girls 1.29%) by criterion II. For age, the overall trends were increasing progressively, regardless of the use of diagnostic criteria for an elevated ALT activity. Conclusions. This study supplements the gap that the prevalence of elevated ALT levels differed in gender, age, and criteria among adolescents of Shenzhen. We should take the prevalence as a predictor and continue to play a warning and preventive role in preparation for further intervention.

Background: It is known that exercise causes many changes in the human organism. Understanding the metabolisms underlying these changes is an important issue. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different and regularly applied exercise programs on irisin, heat shock protein 70 and some biochemical parameters. Methods: 120 male university students participated in the study. Participants were divided into 4 equal groups as control (C), resistance exercise group (RE), high intensity interval (HIIT) and aerobic exercise group (AE). While the control group did not perform any exercise, the pre-determined exercise programs were applied to the other groups for 8 weeks and 3 days in a week. Blood samples were taken from all participants before and after the exercise program. Cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Irisin and Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels were analyzed in blood samples. Results: It is determined that there are significant differences in pre-posttest values ​​of the AE group’s LDH, cholesterol, HDL, Triglyceride and HSP 70 levels, HIIT group’s CK, LDH, Cholesterol, HDL, Triglyceride, Irisin and HSP70 levels and RE group’s CK, LDH, Cholesterol, LDL, Triglyceride and irisin levels (p<0.05). Conlusions: It can be said that; exercise can correct abnormalities in lipid profile, changes in HSP70 levels may vary depending on muscle damage, the increase of irisin due to exercise.

Published analyses have noted elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity in patients taking up to 4000 mg/day of acetaminophen. Data from 3 osteoarthritis trials of acetaminophen 3900–4000 mg/day in which ALT and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were recorded within approximately 2 weeks of therapy initiation were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with baseline ALT or AST above the upper limit of the reference range (ULRR) were excluded. Among 466 patients, 376 (80.7%) had no ALT elevations within approximately 2 weeks of treatment initiation. Elevations >1.5 and >3.0 times ULRR occurred in 4.5% and 0.9% of patients, respectively. Elevations were transient as most resolved (72.9%) or declined (22.4%) with continued treatment beyond 2 weeks. Within approximately 2 weeks of therapy initiation, no patient had ALT > 5 times ULRR or ALT > 3 times ULRR combined with bilirubin >2 times ULRR. ALT elevations were transient and asymptomatic; almost all resolved or declined while on continued therapy and appear not to be clinically important. The study was carried out to assess the effect of antioxidant vitamin E on the toxicity caused by gasoline in albino rats. The study was carried out by monitoring the aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (Alkphos), urea and creatinine in albino rats fed diet containing vitamin E to saturation and injecting gasoline intraperitoneally. It was observed that the LD100 and LD50 increased significantly in vitamin E fed rats compared to the gasoline fed rats. Also the enzymes monitored were reduced in vitamin fed rats compared with the gasoline fed rats while the kidney function improved with the vitamin E rats by the lowering of the urea and creatinine elevated by gasoline. This suggests that the vitamin E conferred some protection on the rats by its antioxidant nature. Therefore this study showed that gasoline as a free radical caused hepatotoxicity and renal damage while vitamin E can confer protection against toxicity caused by gasoline by donating an electron to stabilize the free radical and terminating the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Abstract The activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, albumin and cholesterol levels were determined in the blood serum of Japanese quails infected with coccidia and treated with Baycox (active ingredient: toltrazuril). Lower levels of AST and ALT activity were noted in treated birds regardless of the applied Baycox dose. The biochemical changes observed in the blood serum of Japanese quails point to coccidia-induced damage of digestive system tissues despite an absence of pronounced clinical symptoms. Significantly lower levels of AST activity and higher levels of LDH activity in treated birds indicate that coccidiosis treatment with toltrazuril contributed to the regeneration of digestive system tissues. An insignificant increase in cholesterol levels was noted, whereas the other serum biochemical parameters remained within the reference ranges.
