Biochemical parameters in Japanese quails Coturnix coturnix japonica infected with coccidia and treated with Toltrazuril

Abstract The activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, albumin and cholesterol levels were determined in the blood serum of Japanese quails infected with coccidia and treated with Baycox (active ingredient: toltrazuril). Lower levels of AST and ALT activity were noted in treated birds regardless of the applied Baycox dose. The biochemical changes observed in the blood serum of Japanese quails point to coccidia-induced damage of digestive system tissues despite an absence of pronounced clinical symptoms. Significantly lower levels of AST activity and higher levels of LDH activity in treated birds indicate that coccidiosis treatment with toltrazuril contributed to the regeneration of digestive system tissues. An insignificant increase in cholesterol levels was noted, whereas the other serum biochemical parameters remained within the reference ranges.

A trial was conducted for a period of 6 weeks to evaluate the effect of graded levels of nucleotide supplementation on serum biochemical parameters in Japanese quails. In the trial, 3 day old Japanese quail chicks were randomly distributed in completely randomized design into 4 treatment groups each with 3 replicates of 10 Japanese quails. The Japanese quails of treatment groups T1, T2, T3 and T4 were provided feed containing 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 per cent nucleotide respectively for a period of six weeks. At the end of experiment blood samples were collected for study of serum-biochemical parameters. The results indicated that decreased serum glucose, serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and increased HDL cholesterol was noticed in nucleotide supplemented groups at higher levels. Protein profile showed significant improvement in total protein, albumin and globulin while A/G ratio revealed no effect of supplementation. Serum creatinine and SGPT contents showed non-significance whereas, serum uric acid and SGOT contents were significantly (P<0.05) reduced in nucleotide supplemented groups of quails. It is concluded that nucleotide supplementation improves serum biochemical parameters without affecting liver and kidney functions.

This study aimed to assess potential feeding effect of camel milk curd mass and its mixes to experimental rat’s blood serum biochemical parameters, enzymatic activity and the peptide toxicity. Fifty healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups (n = 10 each). Each group was fed with camel milk pure curd mass and its mixes for 16 days. At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed to collect the samples from the blood serum. Blood serum biochemical parameters total protein, cholesterol, glucose, albumin, triglycerides; the enzymatic activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase were determined on the A25 automatic analyser, and peptide toxicity analysed by the reference method. The statistical data have shown no significant differences in body weight gain in all groups. Total protein decreased in group II, IV, and V; however, it increased in group III compared to the control group. Cholesterol grew up in group II and it slightly increased in group V, dropped in groups III and IV compared to group I result. Glucose increased in groups II, III, IV compared to group I; still, group V results show a slight decrease. Albumin decreased in group IV, yet in group V it increased than the group I result. Simultaneously, groups II and III results were changed with less percentage. Triglyceride grew up in groups II, V, and it dropped significantly in groups III, IV compared to the control group. De Ritis ratio of enzymes in groups II, III, and IV fluctuated between 1.31 and 0.98 IU/L; however, group V demonstrated significant data versus group I. Diets peptide toxicity in all groups was lower than control group data. The experimental results indicated that curd mass from camel milk could be used as a pure or with additives and it did not discover the observed side effects.

The effects of Aloe ferox, Agave sisalana and Gunnera perpensa on haematological and biochemical parameters of village chickens naturally infected with Heterakis gallinarum were evaluated. One hundred and twelve mature village chickens were randomly allotted into 14 groups of 8 chickens. Group 1 and 2 were orally administered 1 mL distilled water for 4 consecutive days and 1 mL mebendazole (once), respectively. Groups 3-6 received 1 mL orally of aqueous leaf extract of A. ferox for 4 consecutive days, groups 7-10 A. sisalana and 11-14 G. perpensa in graded doses of 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively. Blood was collected into vacutainers in triplicate, from the wing veins on day 0, 7 and 14. Data was analysed using general linear model of statistical analyses system. Chickens offered A. sisalana (200 mg/kg) had highest alanine transaminase (ALT) value (P < 0.05; 7.50 ± 0.406 U/l) on day 0. On day 7 and 14, there was no difference in ALT values (P >0.05). Significant differences among plants for aspartate transaminase on day 0, 7 and 14 were observed. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular volume were maintained within the reference range. From day 0 to 14, haematocrit was reduced for chickens on G. perpensa (50, 100 and 400 mg/kg), A. ferox (100 and 400 mg/kg) and A. sisalana (50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg). Haemoglobin was out of range on day 0 and improved to be within the range on day 7 and 14. The medicinal plants enabled normal synthesis and functioning of haematological and biochemical parameters of village chickens and were maintained within the expected reference ranges.
