Activity of the antioxidant system is one of the mechanisms for the protection of plants against adverse environmental factors. Catalase - a primary antioxidant enzymes. Her change may serve as an indicator of plant resistance to stress. Studied catalase activity in tomato plants of different varieties under the action of low temperatures and cytokinin 6-BAP preparation. The object of investigation used 24- and 27-day-old tomato plant varieties Podarochnyi, Patrice, Volgogradskyi. Found that under the action of low temperatures, the decrease in positive catalase activity: 10-30% at 10 C and 40-60% at a temperature of 3 C as compared with non-refrigerated plants. Less resistant to hyperthermia were plant varieties Patrice. With increasing length of vegetation at a temperature of 25 C in 27-day-old tomato plants resulted in a minor increase in the activity of the enzyme. After the end of the cooling observed recovery of enzyme activity only at grades Podarochnyi and Patrice. This indicates that the indicated tomato varieties possess a high ability to restore metabolic processes. Using 6-regulator cytokinin BAP increased catalase activity in tomato plants as prolonged or momentary cooling. Especially responsive to the drug were plant varieties Patrice and Volgogradskyi. And 6-BAP helped repair catalase activity in 27-day-old plants in the aftereffect of cold stress. Were more sensitive plant varieties Podarochnyi.

Abstract Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly therapy to minimize soil pollution. Cypermethrin (CYP) is one of the most frequently used pyrethroid insecticides against a variety of pests. We aimed at evaluating the potential of using economic plant like tomato as a control alone and together with Plantago major (PM) for the uptake CYP residue from contaminated soil. Also, investigating the antioxidant enzymes such as (SOD, POD and CAT) in roots of PM and tomato. For the first time, we documented the role of PM as a phytoremediator to protect tomato plants from the contamination of CYP pesticide. In a pot experiment, we have cultivated PM and tomato in a soil polluted with CYP (10 µg g− 1). Data showed that PM and tomato accumulated a significant amounts of CYP in their tissues. However, PM is better than tomato in uptake CYP from soil. The longest half-life value (t1/2) of CYP was in PM + tomato together treatment (12.7 days), and the shortest was in the soil with tomato alone (6.81 days). Moreover, the activity of SOD, POD and CAT in treated tomato and PM roots significantly (p > 0.05) exceeded control plants after 8 days from exposure. In this study, a good strategy was recommended to uptake CYP residue from soil by PM and protect tomato plants from CYP residue and also safe the human and non-target organisms.

α-Chymotrypsin was immobilized by radiation polymerization at low temperatures and the effect of the hydrophilicity of the polymer matrix on the enzyme activity and thermal stability was studied. The activity and thermal stability of immobilized chymotrypsin increased with the increasing hydrophilicity of the polymer matrix or monomer. The thermal stability was affected by the form and pore size of the polymer matrix; chymotrypsin immobilized on a soft-gel polymer matrix exhibited an enhanced thermal stability.

The arracacha is an alternative of fresh-cut product; however it can be easily degraded after the processing techniques. The objective of this work was to evaluate the useful life of fresh-cut arracacha submitted to two types of cuts and storage, as well as to evaluate the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The roots were selected, sanitized and submitted to two cut types: cubed and grated. Then they were evaluated at 3 times: 0, 3 and 7 days. The cutting in cubes provided higher quality and lower SOD, CAT and APX activity. However, the grated product presented higher PG activity and lower PPO activity. The microbiological safety and the nutritional value were maintained in both cuts during the whole storage period. The useful life, regarding the physicochemical, nutritional and microbiological aspects, can be established at 7 days under refrigeration for fresh-cut arracacha.

AbstractThe population dynamics of Acetes americanus was investigated, focusing on the sex ratio, individual growth, longevity, recruitment and relationship between abundance and environmental factors in the region of Macaé, strongly influenced by coastal upwelling. Otter trawl net samplings were performed from July 2010 to June 2011 at two points (5 m and 15 m). Nearly 19,500 specimens, predominantly females (77.15%), were captured. Their sizes, larger than that of males, indicated sexual dimorphism. Shrimps at lower latitudes present larger sizes and longer longevity than those from higher latitudes. This difference is probably due to low temperatures and high primary productivity. Though no statistical correlation was found between abundance and environmental factors, the species was more abundant in temperatures closer to 20.0º C and in months with high chlorophyll-a levels. Due to the peculiar characteristics of this region, A. americanusshowed greater differences in size and longevity than individuals sampled in other studies undertaken in the continental shelf of Southeast Brazil.
