ABSTRACTGe-Ga-S-glasses doped with 15000 mole-ppm Pr3+ have been developed for applications in optical amplifiers for 1.3 μm. The formation of crystalline phase separations in Ge 25 Ga10 S65could be suppressed by modification of the glass composition with Sb. Samples have been prepared by melting in sealed silica ampoules at 950°C. Ge-Ga-Sb-S-glasses, doped with 15000 mole ppm Pr3+, were synthesized by addition of Sb2S3up to contents of 14.3 mole% to the composition Ge25,Ga10S65. (corresponding to 83,3GeS2-16,7Ga2S3) or by replacing up to 50 mole% of Ga by Sb. Transparent to opaque glasses were obtained which were free from crystalline phase separations. The modification of the glasses with Sb leads to a remarkable decrease of the transformation temperature of the glasses. However, the temperature working range remains almost unaffected. The transparent glasses exhibit with 15 – 18 μs the same fluorescence lifetimes and the same fluorescence maximum position (1340– 1341 nm) and FWHM (63 μm) as the unmodified Ge-Ga-S-glass. The preparation process for both glass systems could be optimized to obtain monoliths with lengths of several centimeters and intrin- sic optical losses of only 0.05 dB/cm at 1.3 μm (after correction of reflection), which is of very high importance for the future development of planar amplifiers with remarkable net gain.

Glasses rich in rare-earth ions have attracted a lot of interest due to their applications in optical isolators and optical amplifiers. Integrating optical isolators with various optoelectronic devices allows sources to be integrated with lower costs, easier alignment and longer lifetimes. Glasses rich in rare-earth ions have large Verdet constants, so large Faraday rotations. Among the rare-earth ions used in paramagnetic glasses, Tb3+ ions have largest Faraday rotation per ion and the glasses are transparent down to 1.6um. These glasses can also avoid the temperature incompatibility and lattice match problems which are encountered when magneto-optical garnets mare used for integration. The Tb3+doping is also widely used in optical amplifiers. In this paper we have explored the metastable phases present in the sputtered Tb-Al-Si-O system in order to fabricate paramagnetic films with the highest possible Faraday rotations, lowest optical losses and that are easily integrated with semiconductors. A broad peak was observed in the microdiffraction pattern around 2θ= 30deg. This peak corresponded with the close-packed Tb-O plane spacing (111 for FCC Tb4O7 or 002 for HCP Tb2O3), but it was an “amorphous” peak with a 5 deg FWHM. Amorphous films were obtained even when the Tb concentrations were very high. Since high concentrations of Tb are known to devitrify glasses, the discovery of a high-Tb concentrated glass is exciting.

ABSTRACTThe liquidus temperature (TL) often limits the loading of high-level waste in glass through the constraint that TL must be at least 100°C below the temperature at which the glass viscosity is 5 Pa-s. In this study, values of TL for spinel primary crystalline phase were measured as a function of glass composition. The test glasses were based on high-iron Hanford Site tank wastes. All studied glasses precipitated spinel (Ni,Fe,Mn)(Cr,Fe)2O4 as the primary crystalline phase. TL was increased by additions of Cr2O3, NiO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and MnO; while Li2O, Na2O, B2O3, and SiO2 had a negative effect. Empirical mixture models were fitted to data.

Tween 60 and Tween 80 as dispersant had been adding in the preparation process to increase the surface area of VPO catalysts. XRD、 XPS and TEM characterization tests show that the crystalline phase and the catalyst surface area of adding surfactant Tween 60 and Tween 80 are different from that did not. Although the two types of crystalline phase are to (VO)2P2O7but their microscopic structures are different and found that the surface area of the former is 35-40m2/ g, while the surface area without adding surfactants is only 19m2/ g.

Among bioethicists, and perhaps ethicists generally, the idea that we are obliged to respect autonomy is something of a shibboleth. Appeals to autonomy are commonly put to work to support legal and moral claims about the importance of consent, but they also feed a wider discourse in which the patient’s desires are granted a very high importance and medical paternalism is regarded as almost self-evidently indefensible.

AbstractGout (Gr. podagra) is a multifactorial pathology, which means that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in the aetiology of the disease. For these reasons, revealing risk factors could be of very high importance in prevention and treatment of gout. In the present study, we found that a major role in gout predisposition is played by specific alleles in the ABCG2 gene. The study used survey data for 43 gout patients and 99 healthy control individuals who were geno-typed for rs2231142. It was found that allelic variant rs2231142 in the ABCG2 gene had the strongest association with gout. Among other co-factors studied, sex, and increased body mass index were associated with gout.

The researcher studied and investigated the level of importance of consumers’ choice mainly price, location, safety and security, facilities and amenities, and exclusivity in the Philippines. This research was limited to 400 potential residential property buyers from any of the top 10 real estate developers in the Philippines. This study focused on 5 consumers’ choice factors mainly price, location, safety and security, facilities and amenities, and exclusivity towards purchase intention of residential property in the Philippines. Among the 5 consumers’ choice factors for buying residential property, the number one consideration is the safety and security (Mean = 5.530), followed by price (Mean = 5.488), location (Mean = 5.424), facilities and amenities (Mean = 5.266), and exclusivity (Mean = 4.983). From this study, four out of five consumers’ choice factors are rated very high important namely: price, location, safety and security, and facilities and amenities. On the other hand, exclusivity is rated of high importance in terms of buying a residential property.

The purpose of this study was to examine the sport-specific cognitions of 112 ultramarathoners competing in a 100-mile trail run. Subjects completed the Sport Orientation Questionnaire, the Trait Sport-Confidence Inventory, the Commitment to Running Scale, and a questionnaire designed by the investigators to assess goals, cognitive strategies, perceptions of “runner’s high,” and feelings that occur when subjects are unable to run. Ultramarathoners were more confident, more committed to running, slightly higher in competitiveness, lower on win orientation, and higher on goal orientation in comparison to other athletes. Ultramarathoners also rated importance of and commitment to time goals very high; importance of and commitment to place goals were rated low. No significant differences in cognitive orientations were found between finishers and nonfinishers or between males and females. Responses to open-ended questions revealed that most ultramarathoners reported predominately external thoughts during races, had feelings of psychological well-being and strength as a result of ultramarathoning, never or rarely experienced runner’s high, and experienced negative psychological states when unable to run. Overall, these results demonstrate the unique sport-specific cognitive orientations of ultramarathoners.
