Ce3+-activated lanthanide silicon oxynitride (La5Si3O12N, La4SiO7N2, LaSiO2N, and La3Si8O4N11) phosphors were prepared by firing the mixture of La2O3, Si3N4, SiO2, and CeO2 at 1500–1600 °C under a 0.5 MPa nitrogen atmosphere. Diffuse reflection spectrum, photoluminescence spectra, and temperature-dependent luminescence of these phosphors are presented in this work. A blue emission of Ce3+ in all lanthanide silicon oxynitrides was observed under ultraviolet irradiation, which is strongest in La3Si8O4N11:Ce3+. The concentration quenching and thermal quenching of the samples were discussed.

We here report the temperature effect on photoluminescence(PL) spectra of PbSe quantum dots (QDs), which exhibit a strong temperature dependence on their spectra position and intensity. They potentially act as the temperature marker, sensing temperature variations and reporting temperature changes remotely through optical readout. In addition, the temperature sensitivity characterized by peak position of PbSe QDs was found to be 0.39nm/°C in a range of 10-100 °C.

In this chapter, low weight barium-based cholorsilicate Ba5Cl6Si2O6:Eu2+ is prepared through a solid-state reaction. To confirm the structure of the synthesized phosphors, powder photographs were obtained using an x-ray diffractometer. Photoluminescence spectra and FTIR spectra were recorded. Photoluminescence spectra are studied. The emission peak is observed at 407 nm at excitation 275 nm. The intense violet-blue emission is obtained. The broad excitation band and strong emission indicate that Ba5Cl6Si2O6:Eu2+could be a good phosphor candidate for blue LED and white LEDs. Decay curve indicates the phosphor has a long afterglow feature.

Ca8Mg7Si9N22 crystallizes in a tetragonal space group P42/nmc (No. 137) with a unit cell of a = 7.3271(11) Å and c = 10.336(2) Å. Ca8Mg7Si9N22:Eu2+ shows a narrow-band blue emission peaking at 400 nm with an intriguing bandwidth ∼34 nm and shows remarkably high thermal quenching resistance, maintaining 92% photoluminescence emission intensity at 420 K and 75% at 700 K of that measured at room temperature.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were prepared by carbothermal reduction together with in-situ reaction bonding. Raw rice husk was carbonized in an incineration furnace. The carbonized rice husk was ground and was then treated with hydrochloric acid by varying concentrations. The sample powders were mixed with silicon metal powder and pyrolyzed at various temperatures in either argon or nitrogen atmosphere. Silicon carbide phase was found in all pyrolyzed samples. Cristobalite was found in argon atmosphere pyrolyzed samples while silicon oxynitride was found in the samples pyrolyzed in nitrogen atmosphere at lower than 1500 °C. Silicon carbide whisker is the main phase on the surface of pyrolyzed sample. Increasing pyrolysis temperatures decreased the amount and size of silicon carbide whisker but increased the silicon carbide particle. Porosity and weight loss of samples after pyrolysis were increased with increasing temperatures due to the reaction in the system.

Trivalent Eu and Dy ions co-doped amorphous strontium aluminate oxide (SrAl2O4:Eu3+Dy3+) were synthesized through solution combustion route. The phase of the synthesized compound was examined with the X-ray diffractometry. The photoluminescence spectra of the amorphous SrAl2O4:Eu3+Dy3+ has shown that the sharp blue emission of Dy3+ at 483 nm, the sharp yellow emission of Dy3+ at 570 nm and the sharp red emission of Eu3+ at 615 nm can be integrated into the broad blue background emission of the amorphous host. The results indicate that the amorphous SrAl2O4 host can provide good environment to tune the emission color for the SrAl2O4:Eu3+Dy3+.

In this thesis, highly ordered TiO2 nanotube array films were fabricated via liquid phase depostition (LPD) method, based on different anodized aluminum (AAO) templates. The surface morphology, structure and diffuse reflection spectrum were analyzed by XRD, SEM, UV diffuse reflection spectrum. The results show that the crystal structure of the TiO2 nano array was anatase after heat-treating at 400 °C. SEM photographs show that nanobube arrays have an average diamieter of 50~80nm, the surface morphology is flat, and the tublar structure is not violated after heat-treating. As the growth times increased, red-shift effect was abserved in diffuse reflection spectra. And the optical band gap is respectively 1.48ev, 1.70ev and 2.08ev as the growth time is 10mins, 20 mins and 30mins.
