Ilovik Island (5.51 km2) along with adjacent Sv. Petar Islet (0.95 km2) are the most southern part of Cres-Lošinj archipelago, and due to their geographical position, they represent a bridge between the above-mentioned archipelago and northern islands of Zadar archipelago (Premuda, Silba, Olib, Škarda and Ist Islands). This paper was written as a result of several field researches and the analysis of different spatial data sources within the project titled Geographical Bases of the Development of Small Croatian Islands, and it presents basic natural and geographical features of Ilovik Island as well as possibilities for its future socio-economic development.

The Novgorod region has an exceptionally favorable geographical position, however, during the period of the general recession of the country's economy, the enterprises located in it turned out to be uncompetitive, sharply reducing their production. In modern conditions the most numerous sector of the economy are representatives of small and medium-sized businesses, which are targeted by programs of the Bank of Russia to support and stimulate their development. The Novgorod region created a municipal program for the development of this sector of the economy, which defines a set of various arrangements, the main goal of which is to provide absolute access to financial and other resources. In addition to these events, training activities are carried out, consisting in the provision of information seminars in various forms for representatives of this sector. The article presents an analysis of numerous problems in entrepreneurship development in the region of Novgorod, as well as specifies the theoretical aspects of changing the business climate. The justifications for necessary state support of small and medium-sized business subjects are highlighted. The research emphasizes two main problems of entrepreneurial activity: the socio-economic development of the Novgorod region and the development of small and medium-sized business subjects.

Abstract The historical roots and geographical features of the population’ formation in the Tyva Republic during the period from the Hunnu domination to the voluntary incorporation of Tyva into the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in 1944 have been studied. The formation of the population occurred in conditions of peripherality of the considered object in relation to the state entities, which it was a part of or was under their influence in different periods of its development. The formation of the Tuvan ethnos was completed during the period when the Tyva tribes were part of Manchurian China in the late 18th-19th centuries. An important factor in this process was the establishment of an administrative division based not on clan but on a territorial principle. The economic and geographical position of the region, as one of the determinants of the socio-economic development of Tyva and the further formation of its population, was and still is unfavourable, which predetermines the search for foundations for the spatial development of the republic.

Spatial-functional duality and physic-geographical diversity of Pag Island are the result of interaction between the key physical factors (karst relief and bora) and socio-economic development in two different administrative frames: Pag and Rab communities. The geographical position of the island on the boundary of Kvarner and Dalmatia determined the main trend of the historic-geographical development. Critical analyses of old cartographic representations enable the reconstruction of the dominant spatial processes, which influenced the landscape modelling. Additionally, on the basis of the geographical data represented on the ancient maps and charts, it is possible to re-enact the socio-economic relationships between Pag island and adjacent regions: Ravni Kotari, Velebit mountain area and Kvarner and other Zadar islands.

The position of the city in the «center-periphery» system is largely determined by its transport and geographical location. The latter is one of the most significant components of the economic and geographical position and determines the dynamics of the socio-economic development of the city. This study evaluates the centrality of cities in some regions of Russia based on the application of the connection curvature coefficient. This ratio is calculated as the sum of the private distances by road and directly between cities. The lower the final value of the coefficient, the more favorable (central) position the city occupies in relation to other cities in the region. We have shown that the first city (the largest in terms of population and, as a rule, the administrative center of the region) has the smallest (that is, the best) value of the indicator of the calculated coefficient.

<p>Critical infrastructure (CI) is fundamental for the functioning of a society and forms the backbone for socio-economic development. Natural hazards, however, pose a major threat to CI. The destruction of CI, and the disruption of essential services they provide may hamper societies and economies. Moreover, the overall risk for CI is expected to rise. This is due climate change (i.e. intensification and more frequent hazards), and socio-economic development (i.e. increase in the amount and value of CI).</p><p>Building sustainable and resilient infrastructure is a key to reducing the impacts of natural hazards and climate change on society. However, an in-depth knowledge of the global CI that is directly at risk for natural hazards is still lacking. The development of a harmonized dataset integrating the geospatial locations of the main CI systems at a global scale will aid to our knowledge on the CI that is exposed and at risk for natural hazards.</p><p>We present a first-of-its-kind globally consistent spatial dataset for the representation of CI. In this study, an index to express the spatial intensity of CI at the global scale is developed: the Critical Infrastructure System Index (CISI). The CISI is expressed in a dimensionless value ranging between 0 (being no CI intensity) and 1 (being highest CI intensity). The CISI aggregates high resolution spatial information of CI based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. For the development of this index, a total of 34 CI types (e.g. primary roads, waste-water plants and hospitals) are defined and categorized under seven overarching CI systems: transportation, energy, tele-communication, waste, water, health and education. Spatial data on these CI types are extracted by using a selection of 78 OSM tags. The detailed spatial data is rasterized into a harmonized and consistent dataset with a resolution of 0.1x0.1 degrees.</p><p>This novel global dataset will be a valuable starting point for policy makers, planners, and researchers in several fields. The dataset can be deployed as a tool to gain insights in the current landscape of the CI network, to identify hotspots of CI, and to gain exposure information for risk assessments. We use open data hosted by OSM, and provide code for further use and development. In this study, we demonstrate the database and CISI at a global scale, but the publicly accessible code can also be used to further develop the dataset with latest releases of data on CI provided by OSM as well as other (open) sources for any location and any resolution.</p>

Ploča Island, as it is called by its inhabitants and the inhabitants of the local area, or Drvenik Mali, as it is usually called in official records and on the maps (3.43 sq. km, 54 inhabitants in 2001) is a part of Trogir Islands in central Dalmatian archipelago. It is located near Drvenik (Veli) Island and the adjacent islets and rocks, and together they make a specific insular area with certain problems concerning spatial development and survival both in the past and in modern times, at the dawn of the 21st century. Within the project titled Geographical Bases of the Development of Small Croatian Islands we did a field research in 2003 and analyzed different data sources in order to investigate the basic natural-geographic features of the island, particularly for the purpose of its modern and future socio-economic development. In order to realize and define the modern valorization of the island, we took particular interest in geographic position, geomorphologic, vegetational and hydrographic features, as well as in demographic and economic structures.
