Arbutus unedo spirit is a valuable product in Mediterranean countries. This spirit is usually marketed in Portugal without wood ageing. This work aims to characterize the ageing effect on the Arbutus unedo spirit, for three and six months with oak wood (Quercus robur L.) submitted to different toasting levels, based on its chemical composition and its sensory properties. For this purpose, several parameters were analysed: acidity, pH, dry extract, and volatile compounds (methanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate and fusel alcohols). The volatile compounds were identified by GC-MS and quantified by GC-FID. Sensory analysis was performed by a trained panel, who have profiled this beverage, as well as the changes acquired during ageing. Spectroscopic techniques, namely FTIR–ATR, were applied to discriminate the different beverages produced. The results highlighted an increase in Arbutus unedo spirit’s quality with the wood contact, mainly based on the sensory attributes. Additionally, they showed that the best beverages were produced using oak wood with medium toasting levels during three months of ageing.

Patchouli essential oil can be obtained from fresh, dried and fermented plant material. It is a highly valuable product in the fragrance industry and its quality changes depending upon raw material age and oil storage. In this work, patchouli essential oils derived from different treatments have been subjected to GC-FID quantitative analysis using an internal standard (ISTD) method with response factors (RF). Samples were obtained from i) fresh plants; ii) hydrodistillation of one year mature and fermented plants; iii) hydrodistillation of one year mature plants; iv) commercial products from Indonesia and Malaysia. Linear Retention Indices (LRI) for both polar and non-polar GC-MS analyses were also measured as a tool for qualitative analysis towards a homologous series of C7-C30 n-alkanes. The results obtained confirmed that, in all samples, patchouli alcohol was the main volatile constituent, with higher amount in lab-scale produced oils, compared with commercial samples. Other major compounds, in lab oils and commercial samples respectively, were: δ-guaiene, α-guaiene, pogostol, seychellene and α-patchoulene. Another 36 compounds were also found.

Task Group 2 of the TDWG Data Quality Interest Group aims to provide a standard suite of tests and resulting assertions that can assist with filtering occurrence records for as many applications as possible. Currently ‘data aggregators’ such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) and iDigBio run their own suite of tests over records received and report the results of these tests (the assertions): there is, however, no standard reporting mechanisms. We reasoned that the availability of an internationally agreed set of tests would encourage implementations by the aggregators, and at the data sources (museums, herbaria and others) so that issues could be detected and corrected early in the process. All the tests are limited to Darwin Core terms. The ~95 tests refined from over 250 in use around the world, were classified into four output types: validations, notifications, amendments and measures. Validations test one of more Darwin Core terms, for example, that dwc:decimalLatitude is in a valid range (i.e. between -90 and +90 inclusive). Notifications report a status that a user of the record should know about, for example, if there is a user-annotation associated with the record. Amendments are made to one or more Darwin Core terms when the information across the record can be improved, for example, if there is no value for dwc:scientificName, it can be filled in from a valid dwc:taxonID. Measures report values that may be useful for assessing the overall quality of a record, for example, the number of validation tests passed. Evaluation of the tests was complex and time-consuming, but the important parameters of each test have been consistently documented. Each test has a globally unique identifier, a label, an output type, a resource type, the Darwin Core terms used, a description, a dimension (from the Framework on Data Quality from TG1), an example, references, implementations (if any), test-prerequisites and notes. For each test, generic code is being written that should be easy for institutions to implement – be they aggregators or data custodians. A valuable product of the work of TG2 has been a set of general principles. One example is “Darwin Core terms are either: literal verbatim (e.g., dwc:verbatimLocality) and cannot be assumed capable of validation, open-ended (e.g., dwc:behavior) and cannot be assumed capable of validation, or bounded by an agreed vocabulary or extents, and therefore capable of validation (e.g., dwc:countryCode)”. Another is “criteria for including tests is that they are informative, relatively simple to implement, mandatory for amendments and have power in that they will not likely result in 0% or 100% of all record hits.” A third: “Do not ascribe precision where it is unknown.” GBIF, the ALA and iDigBio have committed to implementing the tests once they have been finalized. We are confident that many museums and herbaria will also implement the tests over time. We anticipate that demonstration code and a test dataset that will validate the code will be available on project completion.

Avocado is a versatile and valuable product. Its oil is comparable to olive oil in terms of nutritional quality. It can also be used in cosmetics, in particular, in soaps, shampoos and lotions. Despite all these important attributes that avocado has, it is highly perishable and coupled with the lack of farm-to-market roads, a lot of it is lost after harvest during the peak season. The introduction of methods that will transform avocado to products with a long shelf life and added value will go a long way to solving the problem of post-harvest losses and poverty. One of these methods is the production of avocado oil. In addition, in order to reduce the colour of the pigments without altering their quality, discoloration tests were carried out by adsorption on bleaching grounds (a montmorillonite, a kaolinite and activated carbon). The colour intensities of the oils before and after adsorption were determined using two complementary methods: a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and a Konica Minolta spectrophotometer CM-5. The UV-Vis spectrophotometer show that the activated carbon has a best fixing capacity of the pigments; According to the Colorimetric parameters (CIE-Lab) the coordinates L* a* b* that showed brightness (L*) of the avocado oil was half of the olive oil (41.13±0.02 vs 84.85±0.02). The activated carbon was better in fixing the red (a*) (4.99±0.01vs 15.73±0.01 before adsorption) and yellow (b*) (63.71±0.09 vs 70.07±0.09 before adsorption) pigments, while the other two adsorbents have very little influence on the red colour of avocado oil. RésuméL’avocat est un produit versatile et de grande valeur. Son huile est comparable à huile d’olive en terme de qualité nutritionnelle ; elle peut également être utilisée en cosmétique en occurrence dans les savons, champoings et lotions. En pleine saison, l’on fait face à une abondance des avocats dans les zones de production qui sont très souvent enclavées ; c’est ainsi que face aux difficultés de transport et les routes peu praticables pour l’importation, l’on se retrouve en train de perdre de très importantes quantités d’avocats après les récoltes. Or la production d’huile d’avocats permettrait de réduire les pertes post récolte, réduirait le chômage et permettrait de lutter contre la pauvreté après la vente des huiles extraites. De plus, dans le but de réduire les pigments colorés, des tests de décolorations effectués par adsorption sur des terres décolorantes (une montmorillonite en provenance de Maroua, une kaolinite en provenance de Douala et le charbon actif) sont effectués. Les couleurs des huiles mesurées avant et après adsorption à l’aide deux appareils complémentaires : Le spectrophotomètre UV-Vis et du Konica Minolta spectrophotomètre CM-5 montrent. Les analyses spectrophotométriques UV-Vis montrent que c’est le charbon activé qui présente la meilleure adsorption des pigments ; D’après les coordonnées L*a*b*, la clarté de l’huile d’avocat est pratiquement la moitié de celle de l’huile d’olive (41,13±0,02 contre 84,85±0,02), le charbon activé fixe mieux les pigments rouges (a*) (4,99±0,01 contre 15,73±0,01 avant adsorption) et jaunes (b*) (63,71±0,09 contre 70,07±0,09 après adsorption), tandis que les deux autres adsorbants influencent très peu sur la coloration des huiles.

Рассмотрены инновационные технологии продуктов на основе меда. Установлено, что мед как сырье достаточно востребован в пищевой промышленности, а разработка новых технологий с использованием этого ценного продукта требует увеличения объема его производства. Проанализированы динамика производства меда в Российской Федерации в 2007–2017 гг., объемы экспорта и импорта меда в нашей стране за период 2014–2018 гг., а также указаны основные проблемы пчеловодства как одной из важнейшей отрасли сельского хозяйства, поставляющей ценное сырье для пищевой промышленности. Innovative technologies of products on base of honey were considered. It is established that honey as a raw material is in demand in the food industry, and the development of new technologies with using this valuable product requires an increase of it production. Dynamics of honey production in the Russian Federation in 2007–2017, volumes of export and import of honey in our country for the period 2014–2018 are analyzed, and also the main problems of beekeeping as one of the most important branch of agriculture supplying valuable raw materials for the food industry are specified.

Glycerol is one of the most crucial by-products in the production of biodiesel, and owing to its oversaturation in the market, several synthetic strategies have been developed to transform it into other higher value-added products such as glycerol carbonate, epichlorohydrin, 1,3-propanediol, etc. Amongst them, glycerol carbonate is considered to be the most valuable product. Considering the facile separation and reusability of catalyst, heterogeneous base catalysts have attracted considerable attention due to the obvious advantages over Brϕnsted acid and homogeneous base catalysts in the transesterification of glycerol. Herein, we will give a short overview on the recent development of the heterogeneous catalysis in the transesterification of glycerol with dialkyl carbonate. Focus will be concentrated on the heterogeneous base catalysts including alkaline-earth metal oxides (MgO, CaO, and mixed oxides), hydrotalcites, zeolites, clinoptilolites, organic bases, etc. Their catalytic mechanisms during the heterogeneous process will be elucidated in detail.

Valorisation of an agroindustry by-product, through its uses as an ingredient, in the development of a product may be an opportunity for industries to reduce wastes; generating a valuable product rich in bioactive compounds. Nevertheless, as happens with every new product, food manufacturers follow the market trend ensuring that any new product or idea meets consumer’s expectations. The aim of this work is to study the expectation and the acceptability of consumers towards fibre-enriched cookies using blueberry pomace as a functional ingredient. A label for the blueberry cookies, created for this purpose, was evaluated by consumers who rated their expected liking when observing this label. Fibre-enriched cookies were formulated using blueberry pomace powder as source ingredient for antioxidant dietary fibre. A cookie without fibre was evaluated as a reference. Cookies were evaluated by a group of consumers who rated their degree of liking when tasting the sample under blind and informed conditions. Results showed that the consumer expectations were not fulfilled when assessing the product. Acceptability scores of blueberry pomace, fibre-enriched cookies show that most consumers are not willing to compromise hedonic aspects of cookies for their healthful attributes. Focus group was used to explore the characteristics a healthy cookie should have. Formulation of cookies must be optimised taking into account the acceptability of consumers.

Abstract Quercetin (QC) is one of the most prominent dietary antioxidants present in vegetables/fruits, specifically in onions that rank second in consumption following tomato. QC with proven health benefits is now largely utilized as a nutritional supplement. In this work that aims to isolate QC from red onion peels forming a huge agricultural waste, a QC-molecularly imprinted polymer (QC-MIP) in a molar ratio of 1:4:20 (QC:4-vinylpyridine:ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was prepared thermally through bulk polymerization. Molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) procedures were applied for the selective pre-concentration and purification of QC from both red onion peel methanolic extract with 58% recovery and from the extract hydrolyzate with 86% recovery. The hydrolysis process increased both the QC amount as expected and the recovery yield due to changing matrix components. The results demonstrated that onion peel can easily and efficiently be converted to a valuable product, QC, using QC-MIP as SPE sorbent.
