Higher education institutions continue to face increased scrutiny to better monitor student persistence rates and develop better strategies to retain more students through the attainment of a degree. Retention studies on international students are limited and often focused on large public universities. The researcher interviewed students and the international student officers at three small, private four-year colleges in the Southeast United States. The international students were found to be formally and informally engaged in academic and social activities on campus, and engagement was promoted by formal campus sponsored activities, international staff members’ personal involvement, and through faculty and staff interaction. The students became aware of campus resources through college programming, faculty and staff interaction, and peer interaction with other students.

This chapter describes the Coglin Clothing Company (CCC), the focus of a multidisciplinary Live/Living Case Study (LCS) that was developed and introduced at the Eynesbury Institute of Business and Technology (EIBT) between 2010-2013. The LCS methodology endeavoured to address educational obstacles that had arisen from EIBT's international student population for whom it was first designed, but were typical problems of ‘business education' in general. This work begins by attending to issues such as: generalised problems of the education-experience business-related gap; the benefits of integrating more than one business discipline; the difficulties of handling various and conflicting sources of information; and the indispensability of action learning for deeper comprehension. A LCS was integrated across eight separate courses, including one titled ‘Management Principles'. The relevant literature is presented, followed by a discussion of the value of LCSs for acculturating (international) students to ‘real-life' business scenarios.

Educational system assessment allows the evaluation of some learningoutcomes and permits the continuous monitoring of educational processes.The aim of this study is to explore the ways used to assess and evaluateschool systems and universities and students’ learning outcomes in Italy andFinland, two important educational realities as shown in PISA (Programmefor International Student Assessment) results (OECD, 2019). The attention isfocused on common and uncommon practices employed in each country andon perceptions that the educational system assessment creates in those whoevaluate and in those evaluated. Ten stakeholders from Italy and Finlandparticipated in focus groups or interviews one to one audio-taped,transcribed and analysed using qualitative methods. The results underlinethat the evaluation of school systems and universities helps build a largedatabase and that the evaluation process have to be made with trust betweenstakeholders involved, with innovation and awareness. The generalacceptance is increasing: stakeholders from two contexts consideredhighlight that, in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness, schoolsystems and universities need a formative assessment and evaluation inwhich everyone is involved from central educational institutions to teachersand students.

Prior studies examining international student-athletes’ transition experiences to life on American colleges campuses have generally focused on outcomes related to their recruiting experience and change adaptation. Few studies included the adjustment process and challenges faced by the individuals. The primary purpose of this case study was to add to the existing literature by expanding on the psychological transition process of international swimming and diving student-athletes experience after joining an American intercollegiate athletics team. Utilizing Bridges (1986) model, the present study employed semi-structured interviews amongst 10 international student-athletes from a large NCAA Division I university. A thematic analysis revealed seven major themes, which were: realization that change was necessary, reflecting on the decision, language barrier, education system, cultural adjustment and valuable lessons,international bond, and words of wisdom. The findings suggested transition is a multi-stage process that occurs throughout student-athletes’ experiences on campus.   Key words: college athletics, international student-athletes, transitioning process

Education is always related to reading activities. The ability to read is often referred to as literacy activities.  The reality in Indonesia so far is the low mastery of literacy, this is evidenced by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey. The survey in 2018 showed that for the reading / literacy competency score, Indonesia was ranked 72 out of 77 countries. To deal with this problem, many things can be applied in the education process, both from formal non-formal and informal channels.Kampung Sinau is a thematic village located in the Cemorokandang Malang City. Various learning activities are carried out in unique ways that can attract citizens, the younger generation in particular, to enrich literacy and make citizens literate, one of which is community empowerment activities. Researchers are interested in knowing how to optimize community empowerment in making generations young people with literacy skills in Kampung Sinau. The approach and type of research used by the researcher is a qualitative approach to the type of case study.  This research was conducted at the end of 2019 in Kampung Sinau, Malang City. The results of this study 1) Community participation is needed in the success of the empowerment program, 2) It takes stages to carry out community empowerment., 3) It takes collaboration and innovation to create a literate society. Suggestions from this study are that the results of this study can be used as a reference for evaluating and developing similar programs. AbstrakPendidikan selalu berkaitan erat dengan kegiatan membaca. Kegiatan ini selalu menjadi salah satu point utama yang mendukung lancarnya proses pendidikan. Kemampuan membaca sering disebut dengan kegiatan Literasi. Kenyataan yang dihadapi oleh Indonesia selama ini adalah rendahnya penguasaan literasi, dibuktikan melalui survei Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Survei pada tahun 2018 menunjukkan bahwa nilai kompetensi Membaca/literasi, Indonesia berada dalam peringkat 72 dari 77 negara. Kenyataan ini sangat bertentangan dengan keadaan Ideal yang seharusnya. Untuk menghadapi permasalahan, banyak hal yang dapat diterapkan dalam proses pendidikan, baik itu dari jalur formal nonformal maupun informal. Kampung sinau merupakan salah satu kampung tematik yang berada di  kawasan Cemorokandang Kota Malang. Kegiatan belajar dilaksanakan dengan unik yang dapat menarik generasi muda khususnya, agar memperkaya khasanah literasi dan menjadikannya berdaya literasi, dikemas dengan kegiatan pemberdayaan masyarakat. Oleh karena itu peneliti tertarik untuk mengetahui bagaimana pemberdayaan masyarakat dalam menjadikan generasi muda berdaya literasi di kampung sinau. Pendekatan dan jenis penelitian yang digunakan oleh penelliti yakni pendekatan kualitatif  jenis studi kasus. Peneliti melaksanakan proses penelitan secara mendalam melalui  penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan jenis studi kasus. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada akhir tahun 2019 di Kampung Sinau Kota Malang. Hasil dari penelitian ini 1) Partisipasi masyarakat sangat dibutuhkan dalam keberhasilan program pemberdayaan, 2) Diperlukan tahapan-tahapan untuk melaksanakan pemberdayaan Masyarakat., 3) Diperlukan kerjasama dan inovasi untuk menciptakan masyarakat yang berdaya literasi. Saran dari Penelitian ini yakni Sebaiknya hasil penelitian ini dapat dijadikan bahan acuan untuk melakukan evaluasi dan pengembangan terhadap program serupa.

Applying interdisciplinary theoretical analysis within a framework that cross-references studies in the fields of performance, cultural policy, film and screen media, this paper examines transformations of festivals in digital environment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Festivals are cultural and artistic showcases that present and value certain content, as well as places of public gathering and critical debate, on which we particularly focus in this study. After a brief theoretical remark on what theatre and film encounters represent as places of real physical meetings, we move on to online festivals and events of similar nature which take place in digital surroundings. We then set out to analyse two online festivals, using the case study method on FIST - Festival of International Student Theatre (2020) and my Darling Quarantine - Short Film Festival (2020). These examples help us examine the potential advantages and disadvantages of online festivals, and also their specifics: by moving to the digital realm, online festivals lose their exclusivity given by space-time and geographical limitations. Thus, it is necessary to find new models of functioning that can contribute to having quality collective discussions and transnational exchanges of knowledge and ideas. FIST has accomplished this through opening a space for debate through live online chat, making viewers an integral part of the performance. Likewise, my Darling Quarantine has proven itself as a place of collective effort through its creative cooperative programming. We conclude that the critical and socio-cultural potential of online festivals is exceptional, therefore they should not necessarily be thought of as surrogates or extensions of live events, but as authentic cultural practices.

This study examines in-depth the experiences of a mature, international student during her first year at university in the UK, to explore the different dimensions of her learning transitions.  The aim was to gain an in-depth understanding into the factors that influenced a student's on-going development and transformation over their first year; therefore we adopted a narrative exploration / inquiry as a means of collecting data.Maria's narrative is complex and atypical of the majority of the students in the cohort, yet it details the personal, social and academic challenges that can constitute the first year at HE; as personal history and expectations have a varying degree of influence on an individual's transition.In line with other research, this case study shows that students integration into the academic community, combined with peer support is crucial if they are going to settle into university life. The transition to HE is an on-going process and lasts longer than the initial weeks of the formal induction offered by the university.
