This project presents work performed by the Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Brno University of Technology. The primary purpose of this work was to estimate the aeroelastic response of a light aircraft under gust loads. In the past, the gust response has been investigated using the Pratt - Walker formula. This formula is derived from the response of a rigid airplane to a discrete gust. However, the Pratt-Walker formula does not capture either the stochastic nature of continuous turbulence or the effects of structural flexibility. The analysis described here was performed using the advanced FEM software package MSC Nastran.

This paper presents the work performed by the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at the Brno University of Technology. The purpose of the project was to compare the results obtained from classical analytical solutions and a complex numerical simulation of an airplane's aero elastic response. Compared to the analytical solution, which reduces the entire process to a straightforward manipulation with time‐proven graphs and tables, the numerical simulation offers a more complex description of the dynamic processes. A complex simulation, in contrast to the analytical solution providing us with only one estimated parameter, allows monitoring selected quantities in the time domain, thus giving us a tool for a visual qualification of the investigated process. In the past, dynamic aeroelastic properties were estimated utilizing simplified stick beam models. The desire for more complex aero elastic simulations led to the concept of the advanced aero elastic model, coupling advanced 3D structural FEM models with proven aerodynamic theory in the form of the DLM panel method.

This paper presents work performed by the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at the Brno University of Technology. The main purpose of the project was to compare the results obtained from complex numerical simulation and analytical solutions of the aeroelastic response of an airplane. Numerical simulations provide a integrated description of the dynamic processes analyzed and monitoring of selected quantities in the time domain. This represents a tool for the visual qualification of the investigated process. Utilization of a simplified beam‐stick model represents an industrial standard in the field of computational aeroelasticity/flight mechanics. The need for complex aeroelastic simulations leads to a concept of an advanced aeroelastic model that integrates an advanced 3D dynamic part (model) with proven aerodynamic theory.

Changes in the climate over the past decades have caused weather extremes that bring numerous unwanted phenomena. Many of these irregularities cause unusually high and low temperatures, intense droughts and devastating floods. All of the listed natural disasters caused by weather extremes affect a wide range of fields which are crucial for our everyday life and its quality. The most affected areas are health and safety, agriculture, industry, transportation. It is therefore evident that the effect of extreme weather in any form can bring not only financial loses, but also a loss of human lives. Based on these facts it is of great interest that the effects of these natural forces are minimised or totally eliminated. This paper deals with the performance of a newly designed mobile flood barrier in real simulated field test conditions. Construction of the barriers was designed solely by the Slovak University of Technology at its Faculty of Mechanical Engineering with the intention of providing effective, economic and safe flood barriers system with a short assembly time. The undertaken testing was focused on the performance of the flood barriers under static pressure by the deflection measurements. The testing consisted of the following steps: experiment design, on sight mounting and fine-tuning of the whole measuring apparatus and evaluation of the gathered data. To simulate real conditions which the barrier will experience during its use, a life size model of the flood barrier segment was constructed and tested. The measurement setup, measurement procedures, the outcomes of the deformation testing together with the resulting deflection model are presented in the following pages of this paper.

Doppio is a theatre company which uses three languages – English, Italian, and a synthetic migrant dialect it calls ‘Emigrante’ – to explore the conditions of the large community of Italian migrants in Australia. It works, too, in three different kinds of theatrical territory, all with an increasingly feminist slant – those of multicultural theatrein-education; of community theatre based in the Italian clubs of South Australia; and of documentary theatre, exploring the roots and the past of a previously marginalized social group. The company's work was seen in 1990 at the Leeds Festival of Youth Theatre, but its appeal is fast increasing beyond the confines of specialisms, ethnic or theatric, and being recognized in the ‘mainstream’ of Australian theatrical activity. Tony Mitchell – a regular contributor to NTQ, notably on the work of Dario Fo – who presently teaches in the Department of Theatre Studies in the University of Technology in Sydney, here provides an analytical introduction to the company's work, and follows this with an interview with one of its directors and co-founders, Teresa Crea.

AbstractA collection of computer programs called the Hercules Reduction Software Package (HRSP) has been developed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Canterbury, for the data reduction of échelle spectra obtained with the Hercules spectrograph. The main goal in writing a dedicated software package for Hercules was to achieve a highly-optimized reduction process that would provide the basis of a pipeline reduction performed at the Mt John University Observatory. Since the spectrograph has no moving parts, the spectrum produced in the focal plane does not move or change, so that the same reduction procedure can be applied to all CCD images. An optimized routine written especially for Hercules is always much more efficient and reliable than any general-purpose software available. HRSP is written in C and the whole reduction procedure is performed on standard FITS files. A standard échelle reduction is applied, including the background and cosmic ray subtraction, order extraction, flat-fielding, normalization and wavelength rebinning. A special feature is the radial velocity determination by cross-correlation, which has been tested extensively over the past two years proving that Hercules is capable of delivering the high-precision radial velocities needed for detailed studying of binary stars, stellar pulsations, extra-solar planets and other related fields.
