As cities cope with rapid population growth—adding 2.5 billion dwellers by 2050—and grapple with destructive sprawl, politicians, planners, and architects have become increasingly interested in the vertical city paradigm. Given the large-scale problems of skyscrapers, any improvements in their planning, design, and construction would be significant. This paper examines a new crop of skyscrapers that employs green design elements, including aerodynamic forms, greeneries, energy-saving systems, innovative renewable energy techniques, water-saving technologies, rainwater catchment systems, and the like. The examined projects illustrate foremost sustainable design features, strategies, and techniques that help to meet the functional requirements while resulting in attractive forms. They include towers that are completed, under-construction, on-hold, proposed and on the drawing boards. In an attempt to capture a wide-range of innovative ideas and concepts, this paper examines 30 major projects representing major world’s regions that have been active in constructing tall buildings including Southeast Asia and the Far East, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The discussion section also engages the reader with additional buildings that have employed similar sustainable design. The paper concludes by identifying design approaches that could twin sustainability with iconicity, and highlights some of the shortfalls of intended sustainable design.

The artifact, which embodies the culture of the Tujia minority group at the Yangtze River basin, is the directest manifestation of Tujia people's idea of creating and designing tools. Bei Jia Zi is the very typical one of those artifacts. This article investigates the influence of traditional artifacts culture on the sustainable design of modern products, and concludes the crutial design elements affecting modern products from the develpmental trend of current ergonomics, based on the analysis of the emerging background, function and structure of Bei Jia Zi.

<p>Abstract<br />One of the famous comic strips in Indonesia since 2014 is Tahilalats (Instagram @tahilalats). With its<br />simple visual characteristics, Tahilalats comics are able to become interesting, recognizable, sustainable,<br />and comfortable comics to watch. This study will discuss the design elements in Tahilalats comics<br />that form a syntactic visual system as an effort to achieve consistency in each episode. This study<br />uses qualitative methodologies and descriptive analysis methods with Charles Morris’ semiotic theory<br />and literacy methods by collecting data from books, journals, articles, and pages on the internet that<br />are related to the object. Through this research, it can be concluded that the syntactic visual system<br />makes comics look interrelated and when there are too many episodes, it will be seen as a unified design<br />that distinguishes it from other similar comics. The results of this study are expected to be useful for<br />designers and comic artists to understand a good syntactic system in sustainable design works..<br /><strong>Keywords: comic, design elements, syntactic</strong></p><p><strong></strong><br />Abstrak<br />Salah satu komik strip yang terkenal di Indonesia sejak tahun 2014 adalah Tahilalats (Instagram @tahilalats). Dengan ciri khas visual yang sederhana, komik Tahilalats mampu menjadi komik yang menarik, mudah dikenali, berkesinambungan, dan nyaman untuk dilihat.<br />Penelitian ini akan membahas elemen desain dalam komik Tahilalats yang membentuk sistem visual sintaktik sebagai upaya mencapai konsistensi dalam tiap episodenya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan teori semiotika Charles Morris. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode literasi yang memiliki keterkaitan dengan objek. Melalui penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa sistem sintaktik visual membuat komik terlihat<br />saling berkaitan. Selain itu ketika episode yang dibuat sangat banyak akan terlihat sebagai satu kesatuan desain yang mempunyai pembeda dari komik sejenis lainnya. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berguna bagi desainer komunikasi visual terutama komikus agar dapat memahami sistem sintaktik visual dalam karya desain yang berkesinambungan.<br /><strong>Kata kunci: komik, elemen desain, sintaktik</strong></p>

The Impact

ABSTRACT The concept of sustainability in design is meant to ensure that the product of the design is in harmony with humans and nature by taking into consideration the three aspects of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. The objective of this experiment was to integrate the three aspects of sustainability principles into the architectural design studio to train future architects to be able to design sustainable buildings. The study aimed to create an integration method that could be validated through the junior students’ work in the innovative Sustainable Architecture Design Studio (SADS) at Izmir Institute of Technology. The impact of the pedagogy on the students’ ability to integrate sustainable design principles into their projects was measured through the evaluation tools formulated for this purpose by the instructor. Further, the students’ feedback through course evaluation, questionnaire, and colloquium at the end of the term was used to assess the method. The findings of this research demonstrated that the innovative studio pedagogy and teaching method were successful in integrating the sustainable design elements into design studio projects, while the level of sustainable elements integration was 68%.
