The object of our investigations has been to find out if carbohydrate metabolism is disordered in the different forms of insanity.To this end we have determined the sugar tolerance of 100 insane patients by observing the variations in the blood-sugar content after the ingestion of a known amount of glucose.

The subcutaneous injection of 1 or 2 mg. of morphine sulfate per kilo subcutaneously in dogs with a pancreatic deficiency, whose sugar tolerance is still good, produces a rise in the glycemia about four times greater than the same amount of morphine calls forth in normal dogs. As dogs with a pancreatic deficiency due to coagulation or partial resection of the gland may legitimately be considered in a prediabetic state, the inference is warranted that the morphine test may be of value in detecting a weakened carbohydrate metabolism in the human subject. The test could easily and without danger be carried out with the micro methods now available for the quantitative determination of blood sugar. The experimental facts described in this paper give additional corroboration to the view that the response of a normal and of a pathologically altered organism to the same drug in the same dosage may be quantitatively very different.

Type II diabetes mellitus due to an unhealthy lifestyle, one of which is the lack of fiber in daily food consumption. One food that has a high fiber content is tofu dregs. The purpose of this study was to determine substitution of wheat flour with tofu dregs flour to produce a snack bar with the best characteristics, and determine the effect of consumption of snack bar from tofu dregs on blood sugar content in rats. The research was conducted two steps. Step I: Formulation of snack bar using a completely randomized design with tofu dregs flour concentration of 0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, 40 %, and 50 %. The variables of this study were the content of water, ash, protein, fat, carbohydrates, sensory tests, and effectiveness tests. Step II: the best characteristic snack bar in the step I was used experimental rats. This step used true experimental design with pre-post test control group design. The variables of study were blood glucose levels before treatment and after treatment. The treatment group consisted of normal, negative, positive control, and snack bar. The results of the first step of the research showed that substitution of wheat flour with 40 % tofu dregs produced the best characteristic snack bar with 17.19 % water content, 1.33 % ash content, 11.03 % protein, 20.53 % fat, 49.92 % carbohydrate, light brown color, unpleasant aroma, distinctive soy taste, crumb texture, 0.63 % water soluble food fiber, 1.57 % water insoluble fiber, and total food fiber 2.36 %. The results of the second step of the study showed that the provision of substitution of wheat flour with tofu dregs flour 40 % could reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic mellitus rats until normal, start 290 mg/dl to 108.5 mg/dl. Tofu dregs flour can be used for snack bar formulations for people with diabetes mellitus.

Blood sugar determinations were done during the first 5 days of life on 100 sets of twins. Hypoglycemia was found in the smaller member in 8 of 11 pairs who were discordant by more than 25% with the smaller twin weighing less than 2.0 kg. Hypoglycemia occurred in one other pair of the remaining 89 sets of twins. Blood glucose values were not influenced by the birth order or the sex of the infants. Infants who weighed over 2,500 gm had significantly higher blood sugars than those who weighed below 2,500 gm.

Otto Jul Nielsen (Acta medica Scandinavica, Vol. LXX (1929), fase. 1) investigated the effect of septacrol'u (acridine derivative) on blood sugar in various patients with normal carbohydrate metabolism and in diabetics. Septacrol was administered intravenously at 5 kbp. with. In the first cases, the amount of sugar in the blood did not change, and secondly, it is true, there was some decrease, but in magnitude it did not exceed those figures that were obtained in the study of blood sugar in starving patients. These results give N'y the right to consider the action of septacrol to be sharply different from the action of insulin

It is a common experience in the investigation of mental disorders that glycosuria is frequently found, thus indicating a tendency in such cases to a faulty carbohydrate metabolism. With the exception of epilepsy, this occurrence of glycosuria has been noted in most mental conditions. Intermittent glycosuria is met with in general paralysis (Kraepelin) (1); Bond (2) and Strauss (3) note it in about 10 per cent. of their cases. In dementia prócox Schultze and Knauer (4) did not observe glycosuria in the apathetic form of hebephrenia, but often found it to occur with catatonic excitement. With other observers (see Allers (5)) they record the marked association of glycosuria with depressed states, while its occurrence in mania was infrequent except in markedly excited and resistive cases.

Sonneratia caseolaris is a native mangrove species found in China. It is fast growing and highly adaptable for mangrove afforestation, but suffered great damage by chilling event once introduced to high latitude area. To understand the response mechanisms under chilling stress, physiological and transcriptomic analyses were conducted. The relative electrolyte conductivity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, soluble sugar content and soluble protein content increased significantly under chilling stress. This indicated that S. caseolaris suffered great damage and increased the levels of osmoprotectants in response to the chilling stress. Gene expression comparison analysis of S. caseolaris leaves after 6 h of chilling stress was performed at the transcriptional scale using RNA-Seq. A total of 168,473 unigenes and 3,706 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses showed that the DEGs were mainly involved in carbohydrate metabolism, antioxidant enzyme, plant hormone signal transduction, and transcription factors (TFs). Sixteen genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism, antioxidant enzyme, phytohormones and TFs were selected for qRT-PCR verification, and they indicated that the transcriptome data were reliable. Our work provided a comprehensive review of the chilling response of S. caseolaris at both physiological and transcriptomic levels, which will prove useful for further studies on stress-responses in mangrove plants.
