Most descriptive and normative theories of political identity can be plotted between two poles. At one end are accounts of particular cultural political identities, which are based on inherited and primarily homogeneous cultural elements. At the other pole are accounts of ‘civic’ identities, strictly political identities grounded in uncoerced consent to a set of laws, political procedures and institutions. My thesis is that to understand and to encourage the formation and maintenance of viable political identities within the context of multicultural, democratic societies it is necessary to attend to the role that memory, and particularly memory of suffering and shame, plays in that process. Working through memories of suffering and shame is a precondition for developing the cross-cultural and trans-national empathy and understanding that are instrumental in creating stable multicultural, democratic nations and, eventually, a just cosmopolitan global order.

The paper aims to re-think the similar and contrasted parts of contemporary Sino-French diaspora through the extended perspective of Chinese self-image from the methodology of comparative literature, by analyzing the Post-colonialism and Marginal Discourse to Diaspora Discourse. How these diaspora writers/artists both acknowledge and challenge the attachment/memory in a diaspora framework as their cross-cultural identities? How the identity intended to eliminate the concept of national borders? How the identity by describing the cross-cultural elements to carry out the dual identities of Sino/ French?

Article visualizations:

Supporters of the Democratic, Republican, and neither parties from Southern California ( n = 178) and Texas ( n = 136) were administered the Cross-cultural World-mindedness scale. The former sample scored higher than the latter. Supporters of the different parties did not score differently within the Texas sample; however, supporters of the Republican party in the Southern California sample scored lower than the other two groups who were not different from each other, providing partial evidence of criterion validity.

AbstractThe paradigm of archaeological objects in Tipang called Toguan and Siungkap ungkapon stones should be revealed in order to interpret the meaning they contain. Those objects have been dead monument due to the loss of cultural elements that make it difficult for the local people to understand. Emic and ethical sorting, supported by the qualitative method with the inductive reasoning, is done to discover what the local people and various sources or cross-cultural concepts understand of their philosophy. The comparative study on the archaeological objects meanings results in the interpretation of Toguan and Siungkap ungkapon stones as a single entity of symbolism or medium to various rites to reach the ancestors. On the other hand, their separate entity interpretations will suggest Toguan as a part of a farming rite area and Siungkap ungkapon stone as a part of a suggested farming procession.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine the cross-cultural differences between (in)direct Spanish and French request formulations, adopting a pragmatic approach. More specifically, this study focusses on pragmatic equivalences in request formulations in informal and educational contexts, in French and Spanish corpora. In order to do so, a taxonomy was developed, based on the literature and on the analysis of the Spanish and French corpora. The analysis of the data shows that, on the one hand, direct strategies are among the most frequent request formulations in both corpora and, on the other, some formulations are similar in Spanish and in French but that their pragmatic interpretation or their frequency differs.

Previously we reported that tannic acid is a very effective fixative for proteins including polypeptides. Especially, in the cross section of microtubules, thirteen submits in A-tubule and eleven in B-tubule could be observed very clearly. An elastic fiber could be demonstrated very clearly, as an electron opaque, homogeneous fiber. However, tannic acid did not penetrate into the deep portion of the tissue-block. So we tried Catechin. This shows almost the same chemical natures as that of proteins, as tannic acid. Moreover, we thought that catechin should have two active-reaction sites, one is phenol, and the other is catechole. Catechole site should react with osmium, to make Os- black. Phenol-site should react with peroxidase existing perhydroxide.

Summary: This paper presents the results obtained in Spain with The Interpersonal Adjective Scales of J.S. Wiggins (1995) concerning the variables' structure. There are two Spanish versions of IAS, developed by two independent research groups who were not aware of each other's work. One of these versions was published as an assessment test in 1996. Results from the other group have remained unpublished to date. The set of results presented here compares three sources of data: the original American manual (from Wiggins and collaborators), the Spanish manual (already published), and the new IAS (our own research). Results can be considered satisfactory since, broadly speaking, the inner structure of the original instrument is well replicated in the Spanish version.

We examined the cross-cultural equivalence of a widely used instrument that assesses perceived parental rearing, the EMBU-C, among native Dutch and immigrant adolescents living in The Netherlands. The results of a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the factor structure of the EMBU-C, consisting of three latent factors (Warmth, Rejection, and Overprotection), and reliabilities of these scales are similar in both samples. These findings lend further support for the factorial and construct validity of this instrument. The comparison of perceived child rearing between native Dutch and immigrant adolescents showed cultural differences in only one of the assessed dimensions: Immigrant adolescents perceive their parents as more overprotective than do Dutch adolescents.
