The effects of cold-rolling with different reduction ratios of 70%-90% on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti50Zr30Nb10Ta10 alloy were investigated. It was found that the β-Ti phase in this alloy was stable under cold-rolling. With the increase in reduction ratio from 70% to 90%, the microstructure of the alloys evolved from deformed dendrite structure to fiber-like structure. The alloy cold-rolled with the reduction ratio of 70% exhibited optimum mechanical properties of combined high fracture strength of 1012 MPa and plastic strain of 10.1%, which are closely correlated with the dendrite structure of the alloy. It is indicated that the proper cold-rolling is an effective way to improve the mechanical properties of the titanium alloy.

ABSTRACTThe characterisation of dislocation mechanisms in connection with macroscopic mechanical properties are usually performed through transient tests, such as strain-rate jumps, load relaxations or creep experiments. The present paper includes a careful and complete theoretical analysis of the relaxation and the creep kinetics. We experimentally show that the plastic strain-rate is continuous at the transition between constant strain-rate conditions and both load relaxation and creep test. The product of the plastic strain-rate at the onset of the transient test () with the characteristic time (tk) of the transient is found to be independent of , as theoretically expected. This is a clear indication that the assumptions underlying the theoretical analysis are relevant.

The compression behavior and mechanical properties of the Mg-13Gd-4Y-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloy filled with intragranular long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases at different temperatures were investigated. The results showed that the higher the compression temperature, the smaller the plastic strain that the grains withstand. The grains changed from equiaxed to flat strips when compressed at 350°C, and the morphology of the grains did not change at 450°C. Due to the existence of DRX grains, compression at 450 °C didn’t cause large-angle kink, but the kink angle at 350°C was very large. DRX grains only appeared at the grain boundaries and around the intergranular LPSO phase at the beginning of compression, and only appear at the kink bands (KBs) after the lamellar LPSO phases begin to kink. DRX grains gradually increased with the KBs increasing.

Texture of Al alloy is affected to the formability and mechanical properties. In this paper, it was studied that the change of texture and formability of AA 1050 Al alloy sheets which were asymmetrically rolled. Asymmetrically rolled Al sheets showed that the distorted rotated cube texture, {001}, γ-fiber, ND// and {120} and {120} components were increased. The change of texture components after the asymmetrical rolling could be affected to the variation of plastic strain ratios of the asymmetrically rolled AA 1050 Al alloy sheets.

The effect of repeated plastic strain on the mechanical properties of reeled super duplex tube used in the construction of umbilical riser systems is assessed. The impact of typical plastic strain cycles on the fatigue properties of tubing, mechanical properties of the tubing and the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement of the tubing has been investigated. There is evidence that plastic strain cycles have an effect upon the fatigue life of the tube; which can be attributed to a low cycle fatigue mechanism. There is no evidence that plastic strain cycling to specified limits has an effect upon the susceptibility of the material to Hydrogen Induced Stress Cracking (HISC) and typical plastic strain cycles have no degenerative effect upon the mechanical properties of super duplex tube and radial welds.

Due to high strength, perfect plasticity and higher hardness, bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been widely concerned. The work used the vaccum casting of copper-formed mold to establish (Ti36.1Zr33.2Ni5.8Be24.9)100-xCux, where x = 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Thermal properties, mechanical behaviors of compression, and corrosion resistance in the proposed compounds were investigated. The results show that the increase in Cu content enhances the heat resistance and the forming of glass of BMGs, small amount of fine dendritic crystals presents in BMG when x = 3, and the best corrosion resistance and mechanical properties can be obtained when x = 7, the yield strength, fracture strength and plastic strain can reach 1496.15 MPa, 2003.44 MPa and 19.19%, respectively.

The physical, mechanical properties and formability of sheet metal depend on preferred crystallographic orientations (texture). In this research work, we investigated texture development and formability of AA 3003 aluminum alloy sheets after asymmetry rolling and subsequent heat treatment. After asymmetry rolling, the specimens showed fine grain size. We also investigated the change of the plastic strain ratios after asymmetry rolling and subsequent heat-treating condition. The plastic strain ratios of asymmetrically rolled and subsequent heat treated samples are 1.5 times higher than the initial AA 3003 Al alloy sheets. These could be attributed to the formation of ND//<111> texture component through asymmetry rolling in Al sheet.
