No one today doubts that the press is an essential tool to know and understand recent history of countries and nations. And not just from the standpoint of politics and economics but also of everyday life, reflected in these types of publications, sometimes undervalued by historians and others. The evolution of the press in developed countries has been the subject of several studies. A parallel action is needed for the still recently established African states, paying special attention to the post-independence period. For this research an inventory of the titles of those publications is essential, as well as bibliographic data that can be documented.

AbstractLiligo Glacier is a small glacier located in a transverse valley, which flows on the south side of Baltoro Glacier, Karakoram, Pakistan. Terminus variations of Liligo Glacier since 1892 were reconstructed using various methods and sources (historical documents, cartography, photographs, satellite images and field surveys). The glacier is characterized by two phases of strong advance (beginning and end of the 20th century), separated by at least half a century of retreat. The advance rates, together with some ice-surface features such as the heavily crevassed surface and terminus morphology, are considered to be indicative of a surge-type glacier.

In 1958, Roger Vailland and his wife left for Reunion Island to rest and this is where Vailland draws a disenchanted portrait of the island. Despite its character of lost paradise, the island was treated in a negative way: Vailland therefore falls into the category of the great dysphoric and critical travel tales of the 20th century. Marked no doubt by his communist convictions, the writer constructs an anti-narrative in which he reduces Reunion Island to a mineral and sinister land: his work oscillates between the travel narrative and the historical-political treatise in which he analyses and comments on the island's recent history.

Indications of interditions to the feminine speech and its forms of resistance: the Careta magazine and the will of truth (1914-1918). Throughout the 20th century, women gained new spaces in socio-political relations. There were striking restrictions on the socio-political feminine performance, which were based on a society of patriarchal standards, which judged the female sex inferior in human relations. This paper presents statements from the variety magazine Careta, a source for delimiting historical power exercises through the circulation of statements that served both information and instruction of society in general. For women, behavioral guidelines and the expression of opinions on the effervescent and diverse present, as a way to conform them to the destiny of modesty or sometimes suggesting irony in observing the disparities between masculine and feminine. In contrast to the determinations of a place of modesty, there are also signs of female resistance to the knowledge and powers that oppressed and naturalized a place of silence for them. The movement of historical events suggests margins inhabited by latent possibilities of responses to the prevailing order. The suffragist movement, the First War, the Normal School, with or without the content of the feminine rights movement, are presented as a means of proposing the debate on the tension established in the game of strength and power between the masculine and the feminine. Keywords: History of female education; Magazine Careta; Game of strength and power.

The study is devoted to the periodization of the history of Kazakh music in the 20th century which is necessary for an objective reflection of all the complex musical and cultural processes of this time. Based on the existing approaches to periodization (U. Jumakova, M. Drozhzhina, V. Nedlina), as well as the methodology of V.R. Dulat-Aleyev, a universal basis for periodization was searched. Different approaches to the periodization of the musical culture of Kazakhstan in the 20th century one way or another take into account the aspect of the change of cultural paradigms, as a result of which the main time boundaries coincide. The reasons for periodization are the change of generations of composers (U. Jumakova), the interaction vectors of the center and periphery of culture (M. Drozhzhina), intercultural interaction (V. Nedlina). In this study, another, broader basis for periodization is proposed – a change in the paradigms of culture. It involves a semiotic interpretation of musical culture. The division of the recent history of Kazakh musical culture is consistent with the predominance of monomodality (until the 1920s), bimodality (1920-1970s) and polymodality (1980 – present). The paradigm of culture acts as a universal foundation and allows us to combine musical and cultural processes in different musical and creative forms (traditional music, composer creativity, mass art), and also take into account the wide Eurasian context of Kazakhstani music.

An analysis of the religious conversions of persons of Armenian confession to Orthodox allows the author to evaluate them as a special phenomenon in the history of Russian-Armenian church relations, as well as to establish the features of economic, social, national, and confessional policies of the Russian Empire in the Transcaucasus in the 19th – early 20th centuries. The sources are the unpublished documents in Russian from the collections of the National Archives of the Republic of Armenia. Based on the available archival sources, it was established that the cases of the adoption of Orthodoxy by the Armenians were caused by three motives: 1) economic, 2) various situations of a non-economic nature, and 3) coercive measures. Despite the absence of a special “Armenian mission” among the Orthodox priests, the cases of Armenians’ conversion to Orthodoxy, especially those made for economic reasons, were rather actively encouraged by the Russian Orthodox Church. For the Russian government, the Armenians who converted to Orthodoxy were seen as a reliable social base in the Transcaucasus. The relevance of studying the issue is since, in the 20th century, despite the contradictions of the synodal period, the Russian Orthodox Church built relations with the Armenian Apostolic Church based on the principles of friendship, good neighborliness, and mutual assistance. Today, this factor contributes to the strengthening of both church and political relations between Russia and Armenia.

The article deals with the problem of language normalization and its role in the forming of a literary language. The problem is explored on the basis of Croatian and Norwegian languages. Both being Indo-European languages, they do not stay too close to each other etymologically. However, these two languages share some remarkably common ethno-linguistic aspects: Both Croatian and Norwegian have experienced a strong tendency to normalization and unification during their recent history. The sociolinguistic context of this process was slightly different for each language. During the 20th century, Croatian was thought to be merged with its close sibling Serbian to form a single Serbian-Croatian literary language, while in Norway there was a trend to build a unified literary language (samnorsk) based on the two variants of Norwegian, bokmål and nynorsk. The result of the explored tendency is negative for both languages: convergent processes failed for Serbian-Croatian as well as samnorsk. The article argues that the primary cause for this is that social and political factors take a higher precedence over purely linguistic presuppositions for unification.

Evidence has become a key resource within our knowledge society. At the same time, during the course of the 20th century, negotiations on the validity of knowledge became a political and controversial phenomenon which has since shaped the multiple fields of science, technology, politics, medicine and society. As the diagnosis of a ‘post-factual age’ makes clear: knowledge will not be accepted in modern society per se; instead knowledge operators have to satisfy demands to give validity to their findings. But which practices should they apply for this purpose? How is the validity of knowledge negotiated in different public spheres? Using an interdisciplinary perspective, this anthology examines the dynamics of evidence practices. The authors cover examples from research in the fields of medicine, communication, the economy, science, technology and environmental studies. At the same time, they connect analysis from recent history with current phenomena.
