This year, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Neuropsychopharmakologie und Pharmakopsychiatrie e.V. (AGNP) will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its scientific conference, without doubt one of the premier gatherings on all things neuro- and psychopharmacology in Central Europe. The society’s get-together, which is held on a roughly biannual basis, has a long and rich tradition of fostering interactions between practitioners, academics, and decision makers from the private and public sectors. Moreover, the meeting provides a variety of formats for young researchers to present and discuss their work in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

The International Work Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence (IWOBI) is an annual event that comprises both an international peer-reviewed scientific conference and a set of workshops and other activities in order to foster the research abilities and expertise of young researchers in the field of bioinspired intelligence. IWOBI 2018 has been characterized by a strong transdisciplinary component. The main conference themes were at the intersection between classical engineering disciplines and computer science, and the life and health sciences. This was motivated by the scientific environment that defines research that is being conducted in Costa Rica. Even though IWOBI is an international event, it was very important for the local organizing committee to focus on knowledge areas that were considered of special interest to Costa Rican researchers and to students looking to start their scientific careers. With such great expectations, IWOBI 2018 has been the first IWOBI conference in history to have parallel tracks. In addition to a regular track, a biocomputation and related techniques track was developed, as well as another one devoted to high-performance computing (HPC) systems applications for life and health sciences applications. Workshops were another important resource developed within IWOBI 2018. They were considered a very important tool in order to foster and train young researchers within the country and they are a very valuable chance to establish direct networking with elite researchers from different countries and research interests. IWOBI 2018 was the first IWOBI conference that implemented real and effective workshops. There were two workshops, one of them devoted to COPASI software and the other one focused on the use of the message passing interface (MPI) parallel programming library.

The collection of scientific articles under review contains materials of the All-Russian scientific conference held at the Department of Russian History of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in St Petersburg and dedicated to the problems of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The collection contains 19 articles, including one documentary publication. Among the authors of the collection, there are well-known scientists and aspiring young researchers from St Petersburg and a number of other Russian cities as well as one foreign participant (from Poland). The articles examine various aspects of revolutionary transformations, mainly on the basis of Petrograd materials, mostly in the period between spring 1917 and early autumn 1917. Based on a significant number of published and archival sources, the articles of the collection consider little-known facts from the history of the Russian Revolution and propose new approaches to the interpretation of the situation in Russia in 1917.

We analyze the potential of technologies of social and cultural activities used in the practice of student scientific societies, which are aimed at maximum activation of the audience, and ensuring the multilateral interaction of participants in discussion programs. The experience of implementing complex social and cultural events stimulating the all-round development of young researchers is considered, which include panel discussions and scientific battles (scientific stand-ups). The format of the scientific stand-up or scientific battle (Science Slam) is a special kind of scientific conference held in the format of a party, in which young people from different branches of science compete in a witty and fascinating presentation of information on the results achieved. The format of the panel discussion is supposed to be the statement of several experts who set forth different points of view on the subject under discussion, after which the moderator invites the others present to ask questions to the speakers. Panel discussion implies an exchange of views on a given topic, as well as receiving answers from experts for questions of interest to the audience. Panel activities can be accompanied by entertaining episodes and informal audience communication. The Science Slam format does not only have an entertaining mission, but within this intellectual show young scientists go to the microphone, try to make their performances not only informative and capacious, but also funny, provocative, memorable and emotional. Due to the peculiarities of different formats, there are wide opportunities for using theatrical forms of organization of scientific discussion, manifestations of individual initiative and creativity.

The Young Life Scientists (YLS) project aims to give a group of earlycareer researchers the opportunity to organize a scientific conference on their subject of interest, for their peers. This year's symposia consisted of two different topics. The first, a joint project run with the Physiological Society and the British Phar macological Society, was based on asthma and its treatments. The second, sponsored by the Biochemical Society only, was based on the role of fatty acids in health and disease, confront ing the beneficial and detrimental effects on the human body. Overall, the YLS meetings reached nearly 200 students and young researchers this year; both events were a great success with the organizing committees doing a great job.

In keeping with the scholarly traditions of Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty, the 14th “Prof. Vladas Gronskas International Scientific Conference” was held in December 2019. This international conference is an arena for cooperation and scholarly fellowship, with young researchers, master and doctoral students from Lithuania as well as Latvia, Ukraine, India, Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey, Russia, Israel, Nigeria participating in the different conference sections and poster session. The main goal of this scientific gathering has always been to contribute to the reliable, safe, effective and sustainable economy and business development. Thus, the organizing committee strives to create a suitable platform for well‐grounded and open discussion where young researchers have the opportunity to present and share their insights.Encouraging entrepreneurship is a crucial condition for economic growth and this puts forward a new approach to business, creativity, value creation, and the implementation of innovations. It is precisely in this context where business and science should interact. To reinforce this relevant bond, the guest speakers of the plenary session were selected amongst experienced practitioners and scholars. This conference encourages internationalization and a closer cooperation between science and business. In 2019, the conference is going to expand the range of themes and invite not only the young but also experienced scientists to present their scientific findings. Hopefully, there has been some useful take‐away for both academia and business conference participants: new insights and inspirations for further scientific research and possible solutions to boost Lithuanian economy.
