Shock factor is conventionally used to assess the effect of an underwater explosion on a target. The dimensions of some structures are much smaller than the wavelength of incident wave induced by the underwater explosion. The conventional shock factor may be excessively severe for small-sized structures because it neglects the effect of scattering; so it is necessary to study the shock factor for small objects. The coupled mode method is applied to study the scattering field surrounding the cylindrical shells. A nonlinear relation differential is derived from the impact received by the cylindrical shells and the ratio between the diameters of the shells and the wavelength of the incident wave. An improved shock factor is developed based on the fitted curve, considering the scattering effect caused by the diameters of the submerged cylindrical shells. A set of numerical simulations are carried out to validate the accuracy of the proposed approach. The results show that the cylindrical shells and spherical shells under different conditions, but with the same shock factor, have almost the same shock responses.

AbstractIn order to select the heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF) configuration with ultra-low crosstalk and low peak bending radius, comparative crosstalk analysis have been done for the three possible core configurations, namely, Configuration 1 - different refractive index (R.I.) and different radius, Configuration 2 - different R.I., and Configuration 3 - different radius. Using the coupled mode equation and the simplified expressions of mode coupling coefficient (MCC) for different configurations of heterogeneous cores, the crosstalk performance of all the heterogeneous MCF configurations along with the homogeneous MCF have been investigated analytically with respect to core pitch (D) and fiber bending radius (${R}_{b}$). Further, these expressions of MCC have been extended to obtain the simplified expressions of MCC for the estimation of crosstalk levels in respective trench-assisted (TA) heterogeneous MCF configurations. It is observed from the analysis that in Configuration 1, crosstalk level is lowest and the rate of decrease in the crosstalk with respect to the core pitch is highest compared to the other configurations of heterogeneous MCF. The values of crosstalk obtained analytically have been validated by comparing it with the values obtained from finite element method (FEM) based numerical simulation results. Further, we have investigated the impact of a fixed percent change (5%) in the core parameters (radius and/or R.I.) of one of the core of a homogeneous MCF, to realize the different heterogeneous MCF configurations, on the variations in crosstalk levels, difference in the mode effective refractive index of the core 1 and core 2 ($\Delta {n}_{eff}={n}_{eff1}-{n}_{eff2}$), and the peak bending radius (${R}_{pk}$). For the same percent variations (5%) in the core parameters (radius and/or R.I.) of different configurations of cores (Config. 1-Config. 3), Config. 1 MCF has highest variation in $\Delta {n}_{eff}$ value compared to other configurations of MCF. Further, this highest variation in $\Delta {n}_{eff}$ value of Config. 1 MCF results in smallest peak bending radius. The smaller value of peak bending radius allows MCF to bend into smaller radius. Therefore, Configuration 1 is the potential choice for the design of MCF with smaller peak bending radius and ultra-low crosstalk level compared to the other configurations of SI-heterogeneous MCF.

Tresca limit pressures for long cylindrical shells and complete spherical shells subjected to arbitrary pressure, and several approximations to the exact limit pressures for limited pressure ranges, are derived. The results are compared with those in Section III-Subsection NB and in Section VIII-Division 2 of the ASME B&PV Code. It is found that in Section VIII-Division 2 the formulas agree with the derived limit pressures and their approximations, but that in Section III-Subsection NB the formula for spherical shells is different from the derived approximation to the limit pressure. The length effect on the limit pressure is investigated for cylindrical shells with simply supported ends. A geometric parameter that expresses the length effect is determined. A formula and its limit of validity are derived for an assessment of the length effect on the limit pressures.

Abstract The impact of gravity waves on marine stratocumulus is investigated using a large-eddy simulation model initialized with sounding profiles composited from the Variability of American Monsoon Systems (VAMOS) Ocean–Cloud–Atmosphere–Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-Rex) aircraft measurements and forced by convergence or divergence that mimics mesoscale diurnal, semidiurnal, and quarter-diurnal waves. These simulations suggest that wave-induced vertical motion can dramatically modify the cloud albedo and morphology through nonlinear cloud–aerosol–precipitation–circulation–turbulence feedback. In general, wave-induced ascent tends to increase the liquid water path (LWP) and the cloud albedo. With a proper aerosol number concentration, the increase in the LWP leads to enhanced precipitation, which triggers or strengthens mesoscale circulations in the boundary layer and accelerates cloud cellularization. Precipitation also tends to create a decoupling structure by weakening the turbulence in the subcloud layer. Wave-induced descent decreases the cloud albedo by dissipating clouds and forcing a transition from overcast to scattered clouds or from closed to open cells. The overall effect of gravity waves on the cloud variability and morphology depends on the cloud property, aerosol concentration, and wave characteristics. In several simulations, a transition from closed to open cells occurs under the influence of gravity waves, implying that some of the pockets of clouds (POCs) observed over open oceans may be related to gravity wave activities.

AbstractBy means of ping-pong balls, the dynamic buckling behaviours of thin-walled spherical shells under impact loading are studied both experimentally and numerically. First, the quasi-static tests were conducted on an MTS tester, in which the ball was compressed onto a PMMA plate. Apart from the force-displacement relationship, the evolution of the contact zone between the ball and the plate was obtained by a digital camera. In the impact tests, ping-pong balls were accelerated by an air-gun and then impinged onto a rigid plate with the velocity ranging 10–45 m

This report presents data obtained from two line-oriented simulations conducted in the Boeing 757/767 simulators. The purpose of these simulations was to assess the impact of two navigation- and two flight control modes on pilot visual behavior during an entire flight, from takeoff to touchdown. The two navigation modes were the traditional VOR mode, in which a compass rose was presented on the HSI, and the MAP mode, in which a pictorial representation of the airplane's flight path was presented on the HSI. The flight control modes were manual and coupled flight. The results indicated that: (a) the electronic map did not alter the basic “T” scan pattern, (b) the pilots' basic scan pattern did not differ in the two navigation modes when flying manually, (c) pilot scan patterns did vary as a function of flight control condition, with the basic “T” scan pattern accurately characterizing pilot visual behavior in the manual mode but not in the coupled mode, (d) several visual performance measures were sensitive to changes in flight phase, navigation mode, and flight control mode, and (e) no differences in pilot scan patterns were observed between an EICAS- equipped cockpit and a cockpit with conventional engine instruments.

The spectral analysis from experimental data of irregular wave impact on the structures with large dimension in the splash zone is presented. The experiments were conducted in the large wave-current tank in the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. In the experiment, the target spectrum is JONSWAP spectrum, the significant wave height H1/3 is in the range from 0.1m to 0.3m, and the peak period of spectrum Tp in the range from 1.0s to 2.0s. The ratio of s/H1/3, which refers to the clearance of the subface of the structure above still water level (s) to the incident wave height, is between −0.1 and 0.4. The spectral analysis results of the irregular wave impact pressure on the subface of the structure under various case studies are presented. The distribution of spectral moment of the impact pressure on the structure along the subface is given. And the influence of different incident wave parameters and relative clearance s/H1/3 on the average spectral moment of impact pressure are discussed.

One design for a mobile offshore base is to link serially as many as five large semisubmersibles to form a platform long enough to support large aircraft. This paper investigates the linear, wave-induced response characteristics of serially-connected semisubmersibles. A major motivation of this study is to understand more completely the forces required to link semisubmersible modules. The impact of connector strategy and damping on the response, especially the connector forces, is investigated, and the response "modes" which contribute to the connector forces are evaluated in detail. It is shown that the response characteristics can be impacted significantly by the connection strategy, and that connector damping can be a significant source of energy loss when compared to radiation damping. The wet natural frequencies and normal modes are also determined and used to explain the response characteristics of different connection strategies. Although the analyses are based on a specific semisubmersible design, the results provide insight on how other systems of connected semisubmersibles would likely behave.
