Gain Equalization for Few-Mode Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers via Strong Mode Coupling

Few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (FM-EDFAs) are one of the most important optical subsystems for successful space division multiplexed transmission systems. In this paper, we propose a new FM-EDFA designed to achieve significantly reduced differential modal gain (DMG) via strong mode coupling. Using a new numerical model based on a fiber transfer matrix, the DMGs of FM-EDFAs are systematically investigated and two different types of six-mode fiber amplifiers are analyzed, as exemplar demonstrations. In a uniformly doped step-index fiber, the DMG can be reduced from 9.3 to 1.1 dB (i.e., 8.2 dB reduction) and further reduced to 0.5 dB in a dual-layer doping structure.

Simulation of Plasma Emission in Magnetized Plasmas

The recent Parker Solar Probe observations of type III radio bursts show that the effects of the finite background magnetic field can be an important factor in the interpretation of data. In the present paper, the effects of the background magnetic field on the plasma-emission process, which is believed to be the main emission mechanism for solar coronal and interplanetary type III radio bursts, are investigated by means of the particle-in-cell simulation method. The effects of the ambient magnetic field are systematically surveyed by varying the ratio of plasma frequency to electron gyrofrequency. The present study shows that for a sufficiently strong ambient magnetic field, the wave–particle interaction processes lead to a highly field-aligned longitudinal mode excitation and anisotropic electron velocity distribution function, accompanied by a significantly enhanced plasma emission at the second-harmonic plasma frequency. For such a case, the polarization of the harmonic emission is almost entirely in the sense of extraordinary mode. On the other hand, for moderate strengths of the ambient magnetic field, the interpretation of the simulation result is less clear. The underlying nonlinear-mode coupling processes indicate that to properly understand and interpret the simulation results requires sophisticated analyses involving interactions among magnetized plasma normal modes, including the two transverse modes of the magneto-active plasma, namely, the extraordinary and ordinary modes, as well as electron-cyclotron-whistler, plasma oscillation, and upper-hybrid modes. At present, a nonlinear theory suitable for quantitatively analyzing such complex-mode coupling processes in magnetized plasmas is incomplete, which calls for further theoretical research, but the present simulation results could provide a guide for future theoretical efforts.

Influence of aspect ratio, plasma viscosity, and radial position of the resonant surfaces on the plasmoid formation in the low resistivity plasma in Tokamak

In the present paper, we systematically investigate the nonlinear evolution of the resistive kink mode in the low resistivity plasma in Tokamak geometry. We find that the aspect ratio of the initial equilibrium can significantly influence the critical resistivity for plasmoid formation. With the aspect ratio of 3/1, the critical resistivity can be one magnitude larger than that in cylindrical geometry due to the strong mode-mode coupling. We also find that the critical resistivity for plasmoid formation decreases with increasing plasma viscosity in the moderately low resistivity regime. Due to the geometry of Tokamaks, the critical resistivity for plasmoid formation increases with the increasing radial location of the resonant surface.

Efficiency of Plasmon-Induced Dual-Mode Fluorescence Enhancement upon Two-Photon Excitation

Anisotropic noble metal nanoparticles supporting more than one localized surface plasmon resonance can be tailored for efficient dual-mode fluorescence enhancement by ensuring an adequate coupling to both absorption and emission bands of fluorophores. This approach is naturally extended to two-photon excitation fluorescence, where a molecule is excited by simultaneous nonlinear absorption of two photons. However, the relative impact of plasmon coupling to excitation and emission on the overall fluorescence enhancement can be very different in this case. Here, by using the finite-difference time-domain method, we study the two-photon excitation fluorescence of near-infrared fluorescent protein (NirFP) eqFP670, which is the most red-shifted NirFP to date, in proximity to a silver nanobar. By optimizing the length and aspect ratio of the particle, we reach a fluorescence enhancement factor of 103. We show that the single mode coupling regime with highly tuned near-field significantly outperforms the dual-mode coupling enhancement. The plasmon-induced amplification of the fluorophore’s excitation rate becomes of utmost importance due to its quadratic dependence on light intensity, defining the fluorescence enhancement upon two-photon excitation. Our results can be used for the rational design of hybrid nanosystems based on NirFP and plasmonic nanoparticles with greatly improved brightness important for developing whole-body imaging techniques.

Models and scalings for the disruption forces in tokamaks

The study is devoted to theoretical analysis of the models for calculating the disruption forces in tokamaks. It is motivated by the necessity of reliable predictions for ITER. The task includes the evaluation of the existing models, resolution of the conflicts between them, elimination of contradictions by proper improvements, elaboration of recommendations for dedicated studies. Better qualities of the modelling and higher accuracy are the ultimate theoretical goals. In recent years, there was a steady progress in developing a physics basis for calculating the forces, which gave rise to new trends and ideas. It was discovered, in particular, that the wall resistivity, penetration of the magnetic perturbation through the wall, the poloidal current induced in the wall, the kink-mode coupling, plasma position in the vacuum vessel must be the elements essentially affecting the disruption forces. These and related predictions along with earlier less sophisticated concepts and results are analyzed here

Analysis of Material Susceptibility in Silicon on Insulator Waveguides With Combined Simulation of Four-Wave Mixing and Linear Mode Coupling

We derive propagation equations modeling third-order susceptibility-induced nonlinear interaction and linear mode coupling in waveguides. We model material susceptibility with Raman and electronic response which include approximations suited for optical communications. We validate our model by comparing numerical integration of the propagation equations to continuous wave measurements of a silicon on insulator waveguide.
