Redox status changes during an annual training cycle in young and adult track and field athletes and possible differences between the two age groups were assessed. Forty-six individuals (24 children and 22 adults) were assigned to four groups: trained adolescents, (TAD,N=13), untrained adolescents (UAD,N=11), trained adults (TA,N=12), and untrained adults (UA,N=10). Aerobic capacity and redox status related variables [total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione (GSH), catalase activity, TBARS, protein carbonyls (PC), uric acid, and bilirubin] were assessed at rest and in response to a time-trial bout before training, at mid- and posttraining. TAC, catalase activity, TBARS, PC, uric acid, and bilirubin increased and GSH declined in all groups in response to acute exercise independent of training status and age. Training improved aerobic capacity, TAC, and GSH at rest and in response to exercise. Age affected basal and exercise-induced responses since adults demonstrated a greater TAC and GSH levels at rest and a greater rise of TBARS, protein carbonyls, and TAC and decline of GSH in response to exercise. Catalase activity, uric acid, and bilirubin responses were comparable among groups. These results suggest that acute exercise, age, and training modulate the antioxidant reserves of the body.

G6PD deficiency renders cells more susceptible to oxidative insults, while antioxidant dietary supplementation could restore redox balance and ameliorate exercise-induced oxidative stress. To examine the effects of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) supplementation on redox status indices in G6PD deficient individuals, eight male adults with G6PD deficiency (D) participated in this randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial. Participants were randomly assigned to receive ALA (600 mg/day) or placebo for 4 weeks separated by a 4-week washout period. Before and at the end of each treatment period, participants exercised following an exhaustive treadmill exercise protocol. Blood samples were obtained before (at rest), immediately after and 1h after exercise for later analysis of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), uric acid, bilirubin, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and protein carbonyls (PC). ALA resulted in significantly increased resting TAC and bilirubin concentrations. Moreover, TAC increased immediately and 1h after exercise following both treatment periods, whereas bilirubin increased immediately after and 1h after exercise following only ALA. No significant change in uric acid, TBARS or PC was observed at any time point. ALA supplementation for 4 weeks may enhance antioxidant status in G6PD individuals; however, it does not affect redox responses to acute exercise until exhaustion or exercise performance.

Introduction. An osteopathic examination determines the rate, the amplitude and the strength of the main rhythms (cardiac, respiratory and cranial). However, there are relatively few studies in the available literature dedicated to the influence of osteopathic correction (OC) on the characteristics of these rhythms.Goal of research — to study the influence of OC on the rate characteristics of various rhythms of the human body.Materials and methods. 88 adult osteopathic patients aged from 18 to 81 years were examined, among them 30 men and 58 women. All patients received general osteopathic examination. The rate of the cranial rhythm (RCR), respiratory rate (RR) heart rate (HR), the mobility of the nervous processes (MNP) and the connective tissue mobility (CTM) were assessed before and after the OC session.Results. Since age varied greatly in the examined group, a correlation analysis of age-related changes of the assessed rhythms was carried out. Only the CTM correlated with age (r=–0,28; p<0,05) in a statistically significant way. The rank dispersion analysis of Kruskal–Wallis also showed statistically significant difference in this indicator in different age groups (p=0,043). With the increase of years, the CTM decreases gradually. After the OC, the CTM, increased in a statistically significant way (p<0,0001). The RCR varied from 5 to 12 cycles/min in the examined group, which corresponded to the norm. After the OC, the RCR has increased in a statistically significant way (p<0,0001), the MNP has also increased (p<0,0001). The initial heart rate in the subjects varied from 56 to 94 beats/min, and in 15 % it exceeded the norm. After the OC the heart rate corresponded to the norm in all patients. The heart rate and the respiratory rate significantly decreased after the OC (р<0,0001).Conclusion. The described biorhythm changes after the OC session may be indicative of the improvement of the nervous regulation, of the normalization of the autonomic balance, of the improvement of the biomechanical properties of body tissues and of the increase of their mobility. The assessed parameters can be measured quickly without any additional equipment and can be used in order to study the results of the OC.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an essential gaseous signaling molecule. Research on its role in physiological and pathophysiological processes has greatly expanded. Endogenous enzymatic production through the transsulfuration and cysteine catabolism pathways can occur in the kidneys and blood vessels. Furthermore, non-enzymatic pathways are present throughout the body. In the renal and cardiovascular system, H2S plays an important role in maintaining the redox status at safe levels by promoting scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). H2S also modifies cysteine residues on key signaling molecules such as keap1/Nrf2, NFκB, and HIF-1α, thereby promoting anti-oxidant mechanisms. Depletion of H2S is implicated in many age-related and cardiorenal diseases, all having oxidative stress as a major contributor. Current research suggests potential for H2S-based therapies, however, therapeutic interventions have been limited to studies in animal models. Beyond H2S use as direct treatment, it could improve procedures such as transplantation, stem cell therapy, and the safety and efficacy of drugs including NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors. All in all, H2S is a prime subject for further research with potential for clinical use.

Context: Thymus is intimately related to the immuno regulatory mechanism of the body, its weight in general as well as at different age in a particular population might also be related to the overall immune status of that population. Thus the knowledge of the weight of the thymus at different ages may be helpful in planning of the medical and surgical treatment of thymus related problem as well as dealing patients from immunologic aspects Objective: To measure the age related changes in weight of the thymus gland of Bangladeshi people Study design: A descriptive type of study Place and period of study: The study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, IPGMR Dhaka from October 1996 to March 1997. Materials: 40 (forty) thymuses from Bangladeshi cadaver of either sex were taken for this study. Method: The collected samples were divided into four age groups ranged from still born to sixty years old individuals and comparative studies were done between different age groups. Result: The thymuses increased significantly in weight steadily through the increasing age groups from the still born babies to <16yrs and then declines through the age still higher. Conclusion: In the present study the weight of the thymus increases through the increasing age groups and then declined. Percepts about our body’s position in space and about body ownership are informed by multisensory feedback from visual, proprioceptive, and tactile inputs. The Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) is a multisensory illusion that is induced when an observer sees a rubber hand being stroked while they feel their own, spatially displaced, and obstructed hand being stroked. When temporally synchronous, the visual–tactile interactions can create the illusion that the rubber hand belongs to the observer and that the observer’s real hand is shifted in position towards the rubber hand. Importantly, little is understood about whether these multisensory perceptions of the body change with older age. Thus, in this study we implemented a classic RHI protocol (synchronous versus asynchronous stroking) with healthy younger (18–35) and older (65+) adults and measured the magnitude of proprioceptive drift and the subjective experience of body ownership. As an adjunctive objective measure, skin temperature was recorded to evaluate whether decreases in skin temperature were associated with illusory percepts, as has been shown previously. The RHI was observed for both age groups with respect to increased drift and higher ratings of ownership following synchronous compared to asynchronous stroking. Importantly, no effects of age and no interactions between age and condition were observed for either of these outcome measures. No effects were observed for skin temperature. Overall, these results contribute to an emerging field of research investigating the conditions under which age-related differences in multisensory integration are observed by providing insights into the role of visual, proprioceptive, and tactile inputs on bodily percepts.

Objective: Analysis of age-related changes of microcirculatory bed of bulbar conjunctiva.Methods: 46 individuals of both sexes, divided into 5 age groups according to WHO recommendations, were examined. Biomicroscopy of bulbar conjunctiva was performed using a non-mydriatic retinal camera TOPCON TRC-NW8F (Japan); the obtained images were processed with a mea‑ suring device of automated analysis system ImageScope (Leica, Germany).Results: The average diameter of arterioles, arterioleto-venule ratio (AVR) and specific density of capillaries were the largest, and the diameter of venules was the smallest among the subjects aged 18–44 years. The most sensitive indicators of the state of microcirculatory bed were AVR and the specific density of capillaries, the values of which in the group of 45–59-year-olds were 10–11% lower than in people aged 18–24 and 25–44 years. Differences in other indicators between people aged 18-24 and 45–59 years were not significant. Between the groups of 60–74 and 75–86-year-old participants of the study, pronounced differences (about 18%) were found only in the specific density of capillaries: compared with 18–24 and 45–59-year-olds, this indicator decreased by almost 1.5 times, AVR – only by a third, and changes in the average diameter of arterioles and venules did not exceed 9–12%. Elderly people more often demonstrated arteriolar spasm, their uneven caliber, avascular fields and other disorders of the structure of the micro‑ circulatory bed.Conclusions: As the body ages, in the microcirculatory bed of the bulbar conjunctiva, the number of atypical vascular formations increases, the diameter of the arterioles decreases, the AVR and the specific density of capillaries decrease, the diameter of the venules increases.

Aim of the study. Analysis of the dynamics of the alimentary-dependent prevalence in children from various age groups in the industrial center. Materials and methods. The study was conducted retrospectively according to official statistical reporting. The total and primary incidence in children and adolescents in the city of Angarsk was estimated for 6 years (2013-2018). Age-specific features of the incidence in children were analyzed over 3 years (2016-2018). Relative indices of the incidence were calculated (per 1000 population of the corresponding age), characteristics of the time series: the average annual absolute increment; the rate of average annual growth (decrease); linear regression models were built using the Excel software module. Results. An analysis of the primary morbidity of alimentary-dependent pathology in children of different ages showed that its structure is characterized by a predominance of diseases of the digestive, endocrine systems, and blood. Moreover, in young children, blood diseases are most pronounced. Assessment of the dynamics of alimentary-dependent diseases in children aged 0-14 and 15-17 years revealed multidirectional trends. In children aged 0-14 and 15-17 years, the presence of pronounced trends to a decrease in the incidence of the pathology of the digestive system was revealed. The differences are that pronounced trends in the increase in the incidence are observed in children aged 0-14 years - in the frequency of obesity, in children 15-17 years old - in the frequency of endemic goiter. Discussion. The obtained values of the regression analysis allow predicting an increase in the frequency of diseases of the thyroid gland associated with iodine deficiency in children aged 0-14 years, obesity - in 15-17 year adolescents. Differences in the frequency of these nosological forms depending on the age of the children can be presumably due to changes in eating behavior, the influence of heredity, and the adaptive capabilities of the body. The incidence rates of alimentary-dependent pathology depend on the quality of medical care and the geochemical characteristics of the territory of residence. Conclusion. The study revealed the age-related characteristics of alimentary-dependent pathology and concretized the directions for improving medical and preventive activities.

SummaryStudy aim: Over the last two decades, the body fat mass has been increasing and the level of physical fitness has been decreasing in school-aged children. Due to the health-related concerns that have arisen regarding school-aged children, the Hungarian government introduced everyday physical education in 2012. Since girls are more disposed to higher body fat and low fitness levels, the aim of our study was to characterise the physique, body composition and aerobic capacity of 10 to 14-year-old girls three years after the introduction of the new curriculum with daily PE lessons. Material and methods: All of the primary schools that were selected to participate in this study serve as partnership schools in the University of West Hungary’s teacher training programme (N = 8). The sample included only those upper primary school girls (10 to 14 years of age) who participated in the everyday physical education lesson (N = 543). Standard anthropometric techniques and a 20m shuttle run test were selected for the analysis. Results: An important result of this study was the finding that differences in the body composition features were consistently significant among the age groups. However, there were no differences among the age groups in the results of the 20 m multi-stage fitness test, nor in the girls’ relative aerobic capacity. Conclusions: It can be presumed that an unfavourable body composition and poor fitness occur primarily in the prepuberty years. Everyday physical education serves as a good opportunity for shaping the girls’ fitness level and body composition, and also for encouraging healthy active living.

Aging is characterized with a gradual aggravation of organ function throughout life and can occur both physiologically and prematurely. With premature aging there is an early decrease in the adaptive mechanisms of all physiological systems of the body, there is a significant reduction in physical and mental activities, that contributes to the early development of age−related pathology. Genetic and epigenetic factors, as well as environmental ones can be the causes of different rates of aging. It is not possible to accurately determine the onset of old age by biological characteristics, because people with the same calendar age are not always the same as for biological one. To establish the association of age−related disease factors with the markers of premature aging and biological age in the patients of various age groups, a study was performed in the patients aged 25−44 and 45−59 years with moderate cardiovascular risk in accordance with the SCORE scale. The primary task for predicting and preventing the age−associated diseases is to identify genetic, molecular and cellular factors that determine the rate of aging and increase the risk of age−associated diseases. The role of cardiovascular risk factors in premature aging has been determined. It is established that the most important factors that lead to an increase in biological age and formation of age−associated diseases are the disorders of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and level of oxidative stress, importance of which progresses with age. The relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and biological age, estimated with different methods, their influence on telomere length, that allows the designing of an algorithm to determine the markers of premature aging in different age groups for early and effective prevention of metabolic−associated diseases, has been established. Abstract Background and Aims The kidney is an important organ that removes metabolites and certain wastes and poisons from the body, and retains water and other useful substances through reabsorption. Its aging and function decline have a significant impact on the human health.Rather than simply depending on serum creatinine, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) assessment equation should be given priority in evaluating renal function. Different evaluated GFR (eGFR) equations sometimes have great differences in assessing the true value of GFR, especially for the elderly. The purpose of this study was to analyze the aging changes of renal function in normal people in Beijing and to compare the significance of different eGFR equations in evaluating renal function in Chinese population. Method The age, sex and serum creatinine were recorded in the population who underwent routine physical examination in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2014. Kidney function was assessed by CKD-EPI, MDRD, MDRDc, FAS and BIS equations, respectively. Results A total of 46 713 persons were enrolled in this study, of whom 27 249 (58.33%) were males. They were followed up for 3 years, ranging in age from 16 to 100 years. Both men and women showed age-related change in serum creatinine: serum creatinine and its standard deviation gradually increases parallel with age, indicating that the range of serum creatinine changes in the elderly was larger. Whether male or female, there were differences in eGFR change between different age groups (male: Χ2=141.28, P=0.000; female: Χ2=97.55, P=0.000). For male, eGFR decreased more in the elderly, and it was more common for young people to keep the eGFR constant or increase. However, in female, eGFR remained unchanged in most old people, and increased or decreased in the majority of the young. For all age groups, the ICC was very consistent among the equations, 0.849 for males and 0.817 for females. The whole population was divided into three groups according to serum creatinine &lt; 1mg/dL, &gt; 1mg/dL and &lt; 1.5mg/dL, &gt; 1.5mg/dL. The CKD-EPI equation gave higher stages of CKD than other equations. There was no clear age-related change trend in the 3-year average eGFR change rate of all age groups. For the elderly over 70 years of age, the MDRD and MDRDc equations had higher GFR evaluation results than the other three equations. The BIS equation had the lowest results of all equations. The ICC was very consistent among the equations, 0.966 for males and 0.957 for females. Conclusion we believed that the annual change of GFR varied from person to person and had little to do with age. GFR needed to be calculated more accurately in order to formulate corresponding medical strategies. Those eGFR equations the above-mentioned can be used to evaluate renal function, but the results were very different for different populations and serum creatinine levels. The use of different eGFR equations may lead to large differences in drug dose adjustment and the risk of serious adverse reactions. For the elderly in China, which equation was more suitable was inconclusive and further research was urgently needed.
