Binary complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) ions have been synthesized by reacting metal salts with a Schiff base, 2-((E)-(5-methylisoxazol-3-ylimino)methyl)-4-methoxyphenol (MIIMMP) in an alcoholic medium. All the metal complexes and schiff base have been characterized by using elemental analysis, IR, UV-VIS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, Mass, ESR spectral data, magnetic moments, TG, and DTA studies. Based on the analytical, spectral data and molecular modeling studies, Ni(II) and Zn(II) metal complexes have octahedral geometry, whereas Cu(II) complex has tetragonal geometry. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of the Schiff base and its metal complexes were studied on bacteria, fungi, and human cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa).

A series of some novelN3,N3′-bis(disubstituted)isophthalyl-bis(thioureas) compounds with general formula [C6H4·{CONHCSNHR}2], where R = 2-ClC6H4S (L1), 3,5-(Cl)2C6H3(L2), 2,4-(Cl)2C6H3(L3), 2,5-(Cl)2C6H3(L4), and 2-NH2C6H4(L5), and their Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes (C1–C10) have been synthesized. These compounds (L1–L5) and their metal(II) complexes (C1–C10) have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy,1H NMR and13C NMR spectroscopy, magnetic moments, and electronic spectral measurements. The ligands are coordinated to metal atom in a bidentate pattern producing a neutral complex of the type [ML]2. These compounds (L1–L5) and their metal(II) complexes (C1–C10) were also screened for their antibacterial and cytotoxic activities.

A Schiff base ligand was synthesized by reacting 5-tert-butl-2-hydroxy-3-(3-phenylpent-3-yl) benzaldehyde and thiodihydrazide (2:1) and a series of metal complexes with this new ligand were synthesized by reaction with Cr (III), Mn (III), and Fe (III) metal salt in methanolic medium. The Schiff base ligand and its complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analysis, conductance measurements, magnetic measurements and their structure configuration have been determined by various spectroscopic (electronic, IR,1H NMR,13C NMR, GCMS) techniques. Electronic and magnetic moments of the complexes indicate that the geometries of the metal centers were octahedral. IR spectral data suggest that ligand behaves as a tetradentate ligand with ONNO donor sequence towards the metal ion.

Metal complexes of a Schiff base ligand derived from cefotaxime and salicylaldehyde were prepared. The salicilydene-cefotaxime ligand (H2L) and mononuclear [M(L)] (M(II) = Co, Ni and Cu), dinuclear [Ag2(L)(OAc)2], and tetranuclear metal complexes [M4(L)(OH)6] (M(II) = Ni, Cu) were characterized on the basis of analytical, thermal, magnetic, and spectral studies (IR, UV-visible, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and EPR). The electronic spectra of the complexes and their magnetic moments suggesttetrahedral geometry for the isolated complexes. The complexes are nonelectrolytes and insoluble in water and common organic solvents but soluble in DMSO.

The template reactions of 2,6-diacetylpyridine with 3,6-dioxaoctane-1,8-diamine in the presence of dysprosium(III), thulium(III) and lutetium(III) chlorides and erbium(III) perchlorate produce the complexes of 15-membered macrocyclic ligand with an N3O2 set of donor atoms as a result of the [1+1] Schiff base cyclocondensation. In contrast, analogous reactions involving the lighter lanthanide ions (lanthanum(III), samarium(III) and europium(III)) yield the acyclic complexes with terminal acetylpyridyl groupings as products of the partial [2+1] condensation. The complexes were characterized by spectral data (IR, UV-VIS, 1H NMR, MS), and thermogravimetric and elemental analyses.

A new complexes of the type ML, MʹL and M″L [where M=Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Mn(II), Mʹ=Fe(III) and M″=Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) and L=N1-[(1E)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]-2-oxo-2H-chromene- 3-carbohydrazide (HL)] Schiff base have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductance, IR,1H NMR, UV-Visible and ESR data. The studies indicate the HL acts as doubly monodentate bridge for metal ions and form mononuclear complexes. The complexes Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II) Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes are found to be octahedral, where as Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes are four coordinated with tetrahedral geometry. The synthesized ligand and its metal complexes were screened for their antimicrobial activity.

A series of new coordination complexes of Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Hg(II), Mn(II), and Fe(III) with the Schiff base 3-chloro-N′-[(1E)-(2-hydroxy phenyl)methylene]-6-methoxy-1-benzothiophene-2-carbohydrazide (HL) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, IR spectra,1H NMR, mass spectral data, electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility, ESR spectra, TGA, and Powder XRD data. The Schiff base behaves as tridentate ONO donor ligand and forms the complexes of the type ML2(metal-ligand) stoichiometry for Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Mn(II) complexes and ML stoichiometry for Zn(II), Hg(II), and Fe(III) complexes. All the complexes are colored and nonelectrolytes. It is found that Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes have exhibited octahedral geometry whereas Zn(II) and Hg(II) complexes exhibited tetrahedral geometry. The ligand and its metal complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity againstE. coliandS. aureusand antifungal activity againstA. nigerandA. flavus.

The solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with Schiff base ligands derived from heterocyclic compounds 3-acetyl-6-methyl-(2H)-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione (Dehydroacetic acid) ando-chloroaniline were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance, magnetic, thermal, UV-Vis and1H-NMR spectroscopy. The ligand field parameters have been evaluated for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes which suggest an octahedral geometry for each of them. The magnetic moment and spectral data suggest the dimeric nature of Mn(II) complexes with octahedral geometry. The fungicidal activities of the ligands and their metal complexes have been screened in vitro againstAspergillus nigerand the percentage inhibition of the metal complexes is found to be increased considerably then that of their corresponding ligands and the order is Cu>Ni>Fe>Mn>Co.
