Novel soluble polyimides having long-chain alkyl groups on their side chain were synthesizedviapolymer reaction with the polyimides having phenolic OH groups and 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)benzoic acid (12GA) using N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as a dehydration reagent. The polyimides having phenolic OH groups were synthesized from the tetracarboxylic dianhydrides such as 5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydrofuryl)-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride (cyclohexene-DA), 4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidendi(phthalic anhydride) (6FDA), and 3,3′,4,4′-diphenylsulfone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA) and aromatic diamines such as 4,4′-diamino-3,3′-dihydroxybiphenyl (HAB). The polymer reactions were carried out in NMP and the progresses of polymer reactions were quantitatively monitored by1H NMR measurements (conversion; 12.2–98.7%). The obtained polyimides bearing long-chain alkyl groups have enough molecular weights, good film-forming ability, good solubility for various organic solvents, and enough thermal stability. The water contact angles of the polyimide films were investigated, and it is noted that the introduction of long-chain alkyl groups increases the hydrophobicity of polyimide surface. These polyimides are expected to be applicable as the functional materials for microelectronics such as the alignment layers of LCDs.

The properties of humic (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) isolated from a 27-year-old long-term experiment with rice-wheat-cowpea on a Mollisol in northern India were evaluated for elemental composition and functional groups. As compared to fallow, C, H and N decreased, while O increased in the control, but the use of NPK+FYM over the years enhanced the C and N of humic substances. The carboxylic (-COOH) and phenolic-OH groups declined in the control, but improved with NPK+FYM in comparison to fallow. Carboxylic groups (-COOH) contributed about 2–3 times more in HA and 4–5 times more in FA than the respective phenolic-OH groups to the molecular weights of these fractions of soil organic matter. The results suggested the role of integrated nutrient management in maintaining active soil humus over the years.

In this study, three novel side-chain fluoroalkyl oligoethers with different molecular weights were synthesised via a ring-opening reaction of 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,5-nonafluoropentyloxirane. The fluorooligoethers were then silanized and characterised by FT-IR,1H, and 19F NMR spectroscopies. These silanlized fluorooligoethers were used to fabricate hydrophobic coatings on silicon substrates, which were pre-treated with O2 plasma, by the method of liquid phase deposition. The chemical compositions and structures of the film surfaces were analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the results showed that silanized fluorooligoethers formed self-assembled films on the silicon wafer. The surface wettability of the coatings was measured by water contact angles. It is noted that the annealing process can improve the hydrophobicity with the highest water contact angle being 115.2 ± 1° and hexadecane contact angle being 67.2 ± 1°. The surface morphologies and roughness of the self-assembled films were measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), as a result, the surface was found to be rougher with the increment of the molecular weight of the fluorooligoethers.

Polycaprolactone (PCL) was surface modified with alkaline hydrolysis by NaOH and/or low pressure oxygen (O2) plasma treatment. The hydrolysis was conducted in two different stages: one was performed prior to PCL scaffold fabrication by a high pressure supercritical CO2 technique; the other was carried out after the fabrication. The resulting hydrolyzed PCL scaffolds, with pore sizes in the range of 150-250 μm, were denoted as pre-HPCL and post-HPCL, respectively. Both non-hydrolyzed and hydrolyzed PCL scaffolds were subsequently subjected to the plasma treatment, to further enhance the hydrophilicity of the scaffolds. The surface morphology, wettability and chemical composition of all PCL scaffolds were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. It was found that the surface of the scaffolds turned from fairly smooth to highly rough after the hydrolysis and plasma treatment, particularly when both treatments were in use. The post-hydrolysis induced more surface roughness, compared to the pre-hydrolysis. In addition, the water contact angles on the scaffolds enormously reduced after the treatments; plasma treatment, however, showed a more prominent effect than the alkaline hydrolysis. Although expressing a zero-degree contact angle, the plasma-treated pre-HPCL scaffold was wetted more readily than the plasma-treated post-HPCL. These were in good agreement with the XPS results; interestingly, the plasma-treated pre-HPCL scaffold exhibited the greatest O/C atomic ratio among the PCL scaffolds. This indicated its highest extent of PCL chain oxidation, a degradation of ester groups into-COOH and-OH groups.

Using different methods of statistics, this paper aims to highlight the potential link between the antioxidant activity of flavonoids and the corresponding molecular descriptors. By calculating the descriptors (van der Waals surface (A), molar volume (V), partition coefficient (LogP), refractivity (R), polarizability (a), forming heat (Hformation), hydration energy (Ehidr), the dipole moment (mt)), together with antioxidant activities (RSA) calculated or taken from the literature, number of phenolic -OH groups and the presence (2) or absence (1) of C2=C3 double bond) for 29 flavonoid compounds and by intercorrelation between the studied parameters, the link between the number of phenolic groups grafted to the basic structure of flavonoids and their antioxidant activity was confirmed. Simultaneously, by using the chi-squared test and the intercorrelations matrix, a satisfactorily correlation coefficient (r2=0.5678; r=0.7536) between the structure of the flavonoids and their activity was obtained, fact that confirms the correlation of the antioxidant activity with the number of -OH phenolic groups.

In order to obtain stable superhydrophobicity, suitable hydrophobic treatment agents should be selected according to different material properties. In this paper, cotton and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were respectively coated with dodecyl methacrylate (LMA) via argon combined capacitively coupled plasma (CCP), and the surface hydrophobicity and durability of the treated cotton and polyester fabrics are also discussed. An interesting phenomenon happened, whereby the LMA-coated cotton fabric (Cotton-g-LMA) had better water repelling and mechanical durability properties than LMA-coated PET fabric (PET-g-LMA), and LMA-coated hydroxyl-grafted PET fabrics (PET fabrics were successively coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and LMA, PET-g-PEG & LMA) had a similar performance to cotton fabrics. The water contact angles of Cotton-g-LMA, PET-g-LMA and PET-g-PEG & LMA were 156°, 153° and 155°, respectively, and after 45 washing cycles or 1000 rubbing cycles, the corresponding water contact angles decreased to 145°, 88°, 134° and 146°, 127° and 143°, respectively. Additionally, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyamides-6 (PA6) fabrics all exhibited the same properties as the PET fabric. Therefore, the grafting of hydroxyl can improve the hydrophobic effect of LMA coating and the binding property between LMA and fabrics effectively, without changing the wearing comfort.

A novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based probe to capture heavy metal ion (Zn2+) by bovine serum albumin (BSA) using Si-nanowire (SiNW) arrays with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was developed. A layer with AgNPs was deposited on the SiNW surface by RF magnetron sputtering for enhancement of SERS signals. Using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), the observation reveals that the AgNP layer with depths of 30–75 nm was successfully deposited on SiNW arrays. The Ag peaks in EDS and XRD spectra of SiNW arrays confirmed the presence of Ag particles on SiNW arrays. The WCA observations showed a high affinity of the Ag–SiNW arrays immobilized with BSA (water contact angle (WCA) = 87.1°) and ZnSO4 (WCA = 8.8°). The results of FTIR analysis illustrate that the conjugate bonds exist between zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and –OH groups/–NH groups of BSA. The resulting SiNWs/Ag NPs composite interfaces showed large Raman scattering enhancement for the capture of heavy metal ions by BSA with a detection of 0.1 μM. BSA and ZnSO4 conjugations, illustrating specific SERS spectra with high sensitivity, which suggests great promise in developing label-free biosensors.

The future availability of synthetic polymers is compromised due to the continuous depletion of fossil reserves; thus, the quest for sustainable and eco-friendly specialty polymers is of the utmost importance to ensure our lifestyle. In this regard, this study reports on the use of oleic acid as a renewable source to develop new ionomers intended for proton exchange membranes. Firstly, the cross-metathesis of oleic acid was conducted to yield a renewable and unsaturated long-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, which was further subjected to polycondensation reactions with two aromatic diamines, 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(p-phenyleneoxy)dianiline and 4,4′-diamino-2,2′-stilbenedisulfonic acid, as comonomers for the synthesis of a series of partially renewable aromatic-aliphatic polyamides with an increasing degree of sulfonation (DS). The polymer chemical structures were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C, and 19F NMR) spectroscopy, which revealed that the DS was effectively tailored by adjusting the feed molar ratio of the diamines. Next, we performed a study involving the ion exchange capacity, the water uptake, and the proton conductivity in membranes prepared from these partially renewable long-chain polyamides, along with a thorough characterization of the thermomechanical and physical properties. The highest value of the proton conductivity determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was found to be 1.55 mS cm−1 at 30 °C after activation of the polymer membrane.
