The two water-soluble designed platinum(II) complex, [Pt(Oct-dtc)(bpy)]NO3(Oct-dtc = Octyldithiocarbamate and bpy = 2,2′ -bipyridine) and palladium(II) complex, [Pd(Oct-dtc)(bpy)]NO3, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity measurements, IR,1HNMR, and electronic spectra studies. Studies of antitumor activity of these complexes against human cell tumor lines (K562) have been carried out. They show Ic50values lower than that of cisplatin. The complexes have been investigated for their interaction with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) by utilizing the electronic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectra, and ethidium bromide displacement and gel filtration techniques. Both of these water-soluble complexes bound cooperatively and intercalatively to the CT-DNA at very low concentrations. Several binding and thermodynamic parameters are also described.

A new copper(II) complex with formulae of [Cu(buobb)2](pic)2, where buobb stands for the ligand of 1,3-bis(1- butylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxopropane and pic represents 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity, IR, UV-Vis spectra measurements, and cyclic voltammetry. The crystal structure of the copper(II) complex has been determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The coordination environment around each copper(II) atom can be described as a distorted octahedral geometry. The π-π stacking interactions link the copper(II) complex into a 1D infinite network. The interactions of the ligand and the copper(II) complex with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) are investigated by using electronic absorption titration, ethidium bromide-DNA displacement experiments, and viscosity measurements. Additionally, the copper(II) complex’s antioxidant properties have been investigated in vitro.

The interaction of Elsinochrome A (EA) with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) has been investigated by UV-vis spectra and fluorescence spectra. The results show that EA can bind with CT-DNA and binding sites are destroyed after irradiation by visible light, which indicates that EA is a promising candidate for photodynamic therapy. In addition, the binding mechanism is studied using fluorescence quenching test and ethidium bromide (EB) replace assay experiments. The results suggest that EA and CT-DNA are binding with a strong force and the major binding mode of EA with DNA could be the electrostatic binding.

Three novel carboxylic arylhydrazone compounds named 2- oxo propionic acid terephthalal acyl dihydrazone (1), 2-ketoglutaric acid terephthalal acyl dihydrazone (2) and 2-ketoglutaric acid salicyl- hydrazone (3) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR. The antibacterial activities of 1 and 2 against wheat rust and coliform were investigated. The results showed that 1 had more excellent antibacterial properties than 2 against both wheat rust and coliform. In addition, the title compounds interaction with calf-thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were measured by fluorescence spectra method which indicating that they combined with CT-DNA by groove binding through hydrogen bonds.

A novel iron(III) complex [Fe(SF)](ClO4)3.2H2O; in which SF = N,N0-bis{5-[(triphenylphosphonium chloride)-methyl] salicylidene}-o-phenylenediamine) has been synthesized and characterized using different physicochemical methods. The binding of this complex with calf thymus (CT) DNA was investigated by circular dichroism, absorption studies, emission spectroscopy, voltammetric studies, and viscosity measurements. The results showed that this complex can bind to DNA via external and groove binding modes.

Binding properties of two water-soluble porphyrins, manganese(III) 5-(1-(4-carboxybutyl)pyridinium-4-yl) 10,15,20-tris(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin ( Mn(III)5-CBPyP ) and manganese(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin ( Mn(III)TMPyP ), in the presence of various concentration of calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA), has been studied in 7.5 mM phosphate buffer, pH = 7.2 and at various temperatures by UV-vis absorption, resonance light scattering (RLS) and fluorescence spectroscopy and viscosity measurement. Optical absorption and RLS measurements have demonstrated three different species of both porphyrins form in DNA solution. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated by van't Hoff equation at various temperatures. The values of -4.89 kJ.mol-1 and +65.98 J.mol-1.K-1 for Mn(III)5-CBPyP and -14.92 kJ.mol-1 and +15.46 J mol-1.K-1 for TMPyP were estimated for enthalpy and entropy changes of interaction, respectively. The data indicate that the process is exothermic and enthalpy- and entropy-driven, suggesting that electrostatic forces play a considerable role in the interaction process. The binding of both porphyins to DNA quenches fluorescence emission of ethidium bromide (EB) and the quenching process obeys linear Stern-Volmer relationship, indicating the quenching of electron transfer of EB from its binding sites by these porphyrins. The results of using these techniques indicate the external mode of binding for both porphyrins and a higher binding affinity of Mn(III)5-CBPyP with respect to Mn(III)TMPyP .

A Keggin vanadium-substituted polyoxomolybdate, K5PMo10V2O40(PMo10V2), has been synthesized and it’s antitumor effect against Hela cells was investigated. The calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) binding ability of PMo10V2was also evaluated by UV-Vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra. The identity and high purity of PMo10V2was confirmed by elemental analysis and IR analysis. And the antitumor activity test of PMo10V2was carried out on Hela cancer cells line by MTT assay. The results of MTT assay show that PMo10V2significantly reduced the viability of Hela cells in a dose-dependent manner and exhibited stronger inhibitory activity against Hela cells at an IC50of 800 μg/mL, which is more effective than the positive control, 5-Fu(P<0.05). The results of the UV-Vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra indicated the groove or outside stacking binding between PMo10V2and ctDNA. These results show that the antitumor activity of PMo10V2may be caused by the interactions between DNA and PMo10V2.

A new biomimetic strategy to im prove the self-healing properties of Portland cement is presented that is based on the application of the biogenic inorganic polymer polyphosphate (polyP), which is used as a cement admixture. The data show that synthetic linear polyp, with an average chain length of 40, as well as natural long-chain polyP isolated from soil bacteria, has the ability to support self-healing of this construction material. Furthermore, polyP, used as a water-soluble Na-salt, is subject to Na+/Ca2+ exchange by the Ca2+ from the cement, resulting in the formation of a water-rich coacervate when added to the cement surface, especially to the surface of bacteria-containing cement/concrete samples. The addition of polyP in low concentrations (<1% on weight basis for the solids) not only accelerated the hardening of cement/concrete but also the healing of microcracks present in the material. The results suggest that long-chain polyP is a promising additive that increases the self-healing capacity of cement by mimicking a bacteria-mediated natural mechanism.
