To compute precise point positioning (PPP) and precise time transfer using GPS code and phase measurements, a new software named Atomium was developed by the Royal Observatory of Belgium. Atomium was also adapted to perform a phase-only analysis with the goal to obtain a continuous clock solution which is independent of the GPS codes. In this paper, the analysis strategy used in Atomium is described and the clock solutions obtained through the phase-only approach are compared to the results from the PPP mode. It is shown that the phase-only solution improves the stability of the time link for averaging times smaller than 7 days and that the phase-only solution is very sensitive to the station coordinates used. The method is, however, shown to perform better than the IGS clock solution in case of changes in the GPS receiver hardware delays which affects the code measurements.

GPS is widely used for time and frequency transfer. To estimate the clock difference between two ground stations, a single baseline solution can be performed using external products for the modelling of the geometrical effects (constellation ephemeris and station coordinates). The baseline solution relies on a single-difference formulation, using code and phase ionosphere-free measurements. The phase ambiguities are usually adjusted as floating parameters. Such solutions give very good results when modelling hypotheses are consistent between the external solution (e.g., GPS orbits) and the baseline solution. However, the frequency bias in the computed clock is very sensitive to discrepancies in the models, and is only observed thanks to the code measurement, with limitations due to the noise. Here, we propose to solve the integer ambiguities on single-difference phase measurements. The advantage is the complete elimination of the clock drifts observed in floating ambiguities solutions. This formulation allows also a reliable continuous connection between overlapping clock solutions (jumps between such solutions can be completely eliminated). Several time transfer results are analyzed and compared to TWSTFT. The methodology has been extended to a network of stations using integer ambiguities on zero-difference measurements. The corresponding results are given for a few European stations.

The LARES (LAser RElativity Satellite) was built by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and launched on 13 February 2012 by the European Space Agency. It is intended for studying the Lense–Thirring effect resulting from general relativity as well as for geodynamic studies and satellite geodesy. The satellite is observed by most ground laser stations. The task of this work is to determine the station coordinates and to assess the quality of their determination by comparison with the results from the LAGEOS-1 and LAGEOS-2 satellites. Observation results in the form of normal points (396,105 normal points in total) were downloaded from the EUROLAS Data Center for the period from 29 February 2012 to 31 December 2015. Seven-day orbital arcs were computed by the NASA GSFC GEODYN-II software, determining the coordinates of seventeen selected measuring stations. The average Root Mean Square (RMS) (15.1 mm) of the determined orbits is nearly the same as for LAGEOS (15.2 mm). The stability of the coordinates of each station (3DRMS) is from 9 mm to 46 mm (for LAGEOS, from 5 mm to 15 mm) with the uncertainty of determining the coordinates of 3–11 mm (LAGEOS 2–7 mm). The combined positioning for the LARES + LAGEOS-1 + LAGEOS-2 satellites allows for the stability of 5–18 mm with an uncertainty of 2–6 mm. For most stations, this solution is slightly better than the LAGEOS-only one.

In South Africa the modern outlook towards time may be said to have started in 1948. Both the two major observatories, The Royal Observatory in Cape Town and the Union Observatory (now known as the Republic Observatory) in Johannesburg had, of course, been involved in the astronomical determination of time almost from their inception, and the Johannesburg Observatory has been responsible for the official time of South Africa since 1908. However the pendulum clocks then in use could not be relied on to provide an accuracy better than about 1/10 second, which was of the same order as that of the astronomical observations. It is doubtful if much use was made of even this limited accuracy outside the two observatories, and although there may – occasionally have been a demand for more accurate time, it was certainly not voiced.

Solubilization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a fundamental technique for the use of CNTs and their conjugates as nanodevices and nanobiodevices. In this work, we demonstrate the preparation of CNT suspensions with “green” detergents made from coconuts and bamboo as fundamental research in CNT nanotechnology. Single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) with a few carboxylic acid groups (3–5%) and pristine multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs) were mixed in each detergent solution and sonicated with a bath-type sonicator. The prepared suspensions were characterized using absorbance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Among the eight combinations of CNTs and detergents (two types of CNTs and four detergents, including sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the standard), SWNTs/MWNTs were well dispersed in all combinations except the combination of the MWNTs and the bamboo detergent. The stability of the suspensions prepared with coconut detergents was better than that prepared with SDS. Because the efficiency of the bamboo detergents against the MWNTs differed significantly from that against the SWNTs, the natural detergent might be useful for separating CNTs. Our results revealed that the use of the “green” detergents had the advantage of dispersing CNTs as well as SDS.

BeiDou global navigation satellite system (BDS) began to provide positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services to global users officially on 31 July, 2020. BDS constellations consist of regional (BDS-2) and global navigation satellites (BDS-3). Due to the difference of modulations and characteristics for the BDS-2 and BDS-3 default civil service signals (B1I/B3I) and the increase of new signals (B1C/B2a) for BDS-3, a systemically bias exists in the receiver-end when receiving and processing BDS-2 and BDS-3 signals, which leads to the inter-system bias (ISB) between BDS-2 and BDS-3 on the receiver side. To fully utilize BDS, the BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer are investigated considering the effect of the ISB. Four kinds of ISB stochastic models are presented, which are ignoring ISB (ISBNO), estimating ISB as random constant (ISBCV), random walk process (ISBRW), and white noise process (ISBWN). The results demonstrate that the datum of receiver clock offsets can be unified and the ISB deduced datum confusion can be avoided by estimating the ISB. The ISBCV and ISBRW models are superior to ISBWN. For the BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer using ISBNO, ISBCV, ISBRW, and ISBWN, the stability of clock differences of old signals can be enhanced by 20.18%, 23.89%, 23.96%, and 11.46% over BDS-2-only, respectively. For new signals, the enhancements are −50.77%, 20.22%, 17.53%, and −3.69%, respectively. Moreover, ISBCV and ISBRW models have the better frequency transfer stability. Consequently, we recommended the optimal ISBCV or suboptimal ISBRW model for BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer when processing the old as well as the new signals.

AbstractGlobal Navigation Satellite System raw measurements from Android smart devices make accurate positioning possible with advanced techniques, e.g., precise point positioning (PPP). To achieve the sub-meter-level positioning accuracy with low-cost smart devices, the PPP algorithm developed for geodetic receivers is adapted and an approach named Smart-PPP is proposed in this contribution. In Smart-PPP, the uncombined PPP model is applied for the unified processing of single- and dual-frequency measurements from tracked satellites. The receiver clock terms are parameterized independently for the code and carrier phase measurements of each tracking signal for handling the inconsistency between the code and carrier phases measured by smart devices. The ionospheric pseudo-observations are adopted to provide absolute constraints on the estimation of slant ionospheric delays and to strengthen the uncombined PPP model. A modified stochastic model is employed to weight code and carrier phase measurements by considering the high correlation between the measurement errors and the signal strengths for smart devices. Additionally, an application software based on the Android platform is developed for realizing Smart-PPP in smart devices. The positioning performance of Smart-PPP is validated in both static and kinematic cases. Results show that the positioning errors of Smart-PPP solutions can converge to below 1.0 m within a few minutes in static mode and the converged solutions can achieve an accuracy of about 0.2 m of root mean square (RMS) both for the east, north and up components. For the kinematic test, the RMS values of Smart-PPP positioning errors are 0.65, 0.54 and 1.09 m in the east, north and up components, respectively. Static and kinematic tests both show that the Smart-PPP solutions outperform the internal results provided by the experimental smart devices.

A reasonable grasping strategy is a prerequisite for the successful grasping of a target, and it is also a basic condition for the wide application of robots. Presently, mainstream grippers on the market are divided into two-finger grippers and three-finger grippers. According to human grasping experience, the stability of three-finger grippers is much better than that of two-finger grippers. Therefore, this paper’s focus is on the three-finger grasping strategy generation method based on the DeepLab V3+ algorithm. DeepLab V3+ uses the atrous convolution kernel and the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) architecture based on atrous convolution. The atrous convolution kernel can adjust the field-of-view of the filter layer by changing the convolution rate. In addition, ASPP can effectively capture multi-scale information, based on the parallel connection of multiple convolution rates of atrous convolutional layers, so that the model performs better on multi-scale objects. The article innovatively uses the DeepLab V3+ algorithm to generate the grasp strategy of a target and optimizes the atrous convolution parameter values of ASPP. This study used the Cornell Grasp dataset to train and verify the model. At the same time, a smaller and more complex dataset of 60 was produced according to the actual situation. Upon testing, good experimental results were obtained.

Abstract This paper introduces a power series based method for attitude reconstruction from triad orthogonal strap-down gyros. The method is implemented and validated using quaternions and direction cosine matrix in single and double precision implementation forms. It is supposed that data from gyros are sampled with high frequency and a fitted polynomial is used for an analytical description of the angular velocity vector. The method is compared with the well-known Taylor series approach, and the stability of the coefficients’ norm in higher-order terms for both methods is analysed. It is shown that the norm of quaternions’ derivatives in the Taylor series is bigger than the equivalent terms coefficients in the power series. In the proposed method, more terms can be used in the power series before the saturation of the coefficients and the error of the proposed method is less than that for other methods. The numerical results show that the application of the proposed method with quaternions performs better than other methods. The method is robust with respect to the noise of the sensors and has a low computational load compared with other methods.

Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) based on amorphous Fe-Si-B alloy magnetic particles were prepared. The influence of annealing treatment on stability and rheological property of MRFs was investigated. The saturation magnetization ( Ms) of amorphous Fe-Si-B particles after annealing at 550°C is 131.5 emu/g, which is higher than that of amorphous Fe-Si-B particles without annealing. Moreover, the stability of MRF with annealed amorphous Fe-Si-B particles is better than that of MRF without annealed amorphous Fe-Si-B particles. Stearic acid at 3 wt% was added to the MRF2 to enhance the fluid stability to greater than 90%. In addition, the rheological properties demonstrate that the prepared amorphous particle MRF shows relatively strong magnetic responsiveness, especially when the magnetic field strength reaches 365 kA/m. As the magnetic field intensified, the yield stress increased dramatically and followed the Herschel-Bulkley model.

In an observatory where, as in that of the Calton Hill, the principal object of pursuit is the determination of the exact places of the fixed stars, and the investigation of those exceedingly slow secular variations, which require many thousands of years to run their cycle,—the stability of the instruments, as a necessary element to the accuracy of the observations, becomes of the extremest importance.To secure this quality much invention and no little ingenuity have been employed, but not yet with perfect success; for invariably the more accuracy we demand, the more insuperable difficulties appear to arise. Even nature at last appears to be taxed beyond her powers, for we find when we have passed beyond a certain degree of magnifying power, that there are no bodies absolutely stiff and rigid—none constantly of the same dimensions; but all are expanding and contracting, and giving and limiting with every change of temperature or application of small accidental pressures.
