Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted many researchers because it has potential to supplement and compete with other solar cell technologies like Silicon (Si) and Cadmium Telluride (CdTe). The fabrication of DSSCs requires a photo electrode and a counter electrode of transparent and conducting nature. The commercial DSSCs uses electrodes of fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates. These electrodes are expensive and hence, possible alternative materials that are cheaper and that would provide better performance under similar environmental condition should be explored. In this paper, titanium (Ti)-coated glass substrates were prepared and then used to prepare electrodes for fabricating DSSCs. Similarly, DSSCs were fabricated using electrodes of conventional FTO-coated glass substrates. Performance characteristics like cell efficiency (η%), fill-factor (FF), short circuit current density (JSC) and open circuit voltage (VOC) of both fabricated DSSCs were obtained using their respective J-V characteristic curves under similar illumination of 100 mW/cm2 and with comparable transmittance under the visible transmission spectrum of 300-850 nm. The obtained results showed that DSSCs prepared using electrodes of FTO coated glass substrates have 1.557 times better cell efficiency and 2.172 times better fill factor than that of DSSCs fabricated using electrodes of Ti-coated glass substrates.

ZnS thin films were deposited on indium–tin-oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by a chemical bath deposition method. Then the ZnS/ITO slides were immersed in the solution containing 6 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4), sodium polyacrylate (0.01% w/w), and 0.24 mM AgNO3 at 37°C for 3 h to growth Ag2S films on the surface of ZnS/ITO slides. The absorption band of Ag2S/ZnS/ITO slide displays a considerably blue-shifted. The X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated the presence of acanthite Ag2S on the surface of ZnS/ITO slides, which is consistent with the cyclic voltammetic data.

Photovoltaic heterojunction solar cells formed between n-type cadmium sulfide, CdS, and various p-type phthaloeyanines (Pc) such as H2Pc, ZnPc, MgPc, CuPc, MnPc, PbPc, and VOPc were investigated. The cells were prepared by electrodepositing thin CdS films onto conducting indium-tin oxide (ITO) followed by sequential vacuum deposition of the phthaloeyanines and gold layers. Among the seven phthaloeyanines studied, ZnPc and MgPc exhibited the highest photovoltaic activity. Some optimization work was done for both the ZnPc and MgPc heterojunction devices. The optimum thickness of CdS and phthaloeyanines was found to be 500 and 850 Å, respectively. Under an illumination of 50 mW cm−2, the photovoltaic characteristics of the ITO/CdS/ZnPc/Au cell were: Voc = 0.54 volts, Jsc = 285 μA cm−2, and η = 0.10%, while the ITO/CdS/MgPc/Au cell delivered Voc = 0.46 volts, Jsc = 231 μA cm−2, and η = 0.066%.
