The necessity for a steady STEM workforce has prompted academia to develop strategies to encourage people of diverse backgrounds to enter the STEM fields. A bridge program, also known as a conversion program, offers alternative pathways for individuals who have no prior computing education to receive the education that can help in developing their careers or acquiring a graduate-level degree in the computer science fields. This mixed-methods study consisted of two parts. First, an online post-baccalaureate bridge program was evaluated, with a focus on students’ performance. Factors for analysis included gender, prior major, and the length of the program, any or all of which might play a role in students’ unsuccessful attempts to complete the program. The results indicated that female students have a higher tendency to not complete the program. However, female students who completed the program and enrolled in a graduate school have as much potential to do well in the MS program as their male cohorts do. The second part of the study comprised a survey of students who completed or did not complete the program and interviews with women students. Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), the results showed that strategies are needed to enhance women students’ perceived competence and relatedness in the program.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the motivational profile in physical exercise among students from various schools with the Deci & Ryan’ self-determination theory. The results were divided according to sex, mode of sport (federated vs non-federated) and the sport modality, as well as know the influence of the implantation of an initiation unit in the school in the practice of this sport in extracurricular schedule. A total of 306 male / female students from Elementary 5th to 4º ESO, with ages between 9 and 16, who belonged to schools in which there had been teaching a didactical unit of initiation to canoeing, completed the Spanish version of the BREQ-2. The results showed only a 57.2% of the students did federate sport, most of them being men. Students had high scores in intrinsic motivation, moderate scores in identified regulation and introjected regulation, low scores in external regulation, and very low scores in demotivation. Federated sport practitioners showing higher levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation than those who did not federated sport. Men showed greater intrinsic motivation than women. No differences were found depending on the sport modality practiced. Football is the most popular sport, followed by canoeing and basketball.Key words: sport, federated sport, teenagers, self-determination, physical exercise, canoeing.

AbstractThere is a persistent gender gap in motivations to run for political office. While exposure to role models is widely believed to increase women’s political ambition, there is little field experimental evidence on whether exposure to female politicians in realistic settings can increase political ambition. We conducted a field experiment in which a sample of 612 female students was randomly assigned to receive emails inviting them to an event that included career workshops with female politicians, or no email. The treatment increased interest in the ongoing national election campaign, but, against expectations, did not have any positive effect on political ambition. Our results suggest that female politicians who discuss their experience bluntly, instead of following a motivational script, may fail to motivate other women to pursue a political career. These results highlight the need for more research into the type of events and messages that bring more women into politics.

Nowadays a transformation in the traditional roles associated to men and women is being produced, however, in disadvantaged contexts of social exclusion these inequalities between men and women are still very notable. The following work aims to reflect on the situation of romani female in disadvantaged contexts throughout their educational process and to establish the necessary strategies to promote the educational process of these students. To do it, we applied a mixed methodology based on questionnaires and focus groups with teachers and key agents from four schools located in contexts of social exclusion with high percentage of romani students. The results obtained show us the perception of teachers and agents about the difficulties of romani female students in the Educational System, and the actions that are carried out from schools to promote the educational progression of romani female students. In any case, it is important to point out that the socio-economic context determines the educational trajectory of romani women students more than the cultural characteristics, since many of the difficulties encountered by the students are more related to the contexts of social marginalization than to their culture.

This paper analyzes the intersection of technology and diversity in classrooms with reference to the implications of the inequity of access and usage for under-represented groups including low-income, minority students, students from culturally diverse backgrounds, students with disabilities, and female students. Strategies at national and individual levels to facilitate a process of digital inclusion for all children are identified.

The meaning of ‘trade’, i.e. transferring or rendering of money's worth in consideration of money, the entitlement of the purchaser of goods to receive true weight and just measure and consideration of the importance of quantity control to the packer are discussed. The legal responsibilities of packers of merchandise, historical and contemporary, are explained and the questions of whether the Weights and Measures Act 1963 oppresses the packer who appreciates the fundamentals of business economics, requires higher standards of quantitative accuracy than heretofore, and favours the consumer at the expense of the packer and/or the distributor are considered. The performance factors of automatic weighing and measuring devices, measuring to determine weight and vice versa, weight representation dependent on the count per unit mass, checkweighing and the fundamentals of dependency are all discussed. The role of the Inspector of Weights and Measures with reference to the mechanics of commodity quantitative control is discussed: where to check, how often, and to what extent. Valuation is made of the results of checking. Consideration is also given to the liabilities of, and defences available to, traders and whether or not deficiency tolerances should be laid down.
