Body composition and energy content of female bushy-tailed wood rats (Neotoma cinerea) were examined in relation to reproductive status. We assessed the extent to which nutrients for offspring were obtained from endogenous reserves, and whether use of these reserves might influence the timing of spring breeding. Among breeding females, fat levels were highest during pregnancy, and were depleted during lactation. The mean reduction in energy content from pregnancy through lactation (266 kJ) accounted for 21% of the estimated 1260 kJ contributed by a female to her offspring in this period. Females potentially gained 3.0 days of nutritional support from their endogenous reserves during winter, but this fell to 2.0 days during summer and was only 0.8 days during lactation. Thus, females support the nutritional demands of lactation primarily by increasing their ingestion of food. Nevertheless, large endogenous reserves may enable some females to begin breeding early in the spring, when the abundance of food is unpredictable.

Body composition, caloric value, and size of selected organs of arctic ground squirrels (Spermorphilus parryii) were examined seasonally and in relation to reproductive status in order to determine if females obtain nutrients for offspring from stored reserves prior to the availability of new vegetation. Seasonal changes in body composition were similar in males and females. Females showed a depletion of skeletal components, total fat, and caloric value during lactation. The mean reduction in caloric value between pregnancy and lactation (495 kcal; 1 cal = 4.1868 J) accounted for only 31% of the estimated 1600 kcal contributed to offspring by a female. Females must support offspring through an increased ingestion of food prior to the availability of new vegetation.

Background:Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex inflammatory disease that modifies body composition. Using the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in RA patients could be a method for body composition changes detection.Objectives:To study the body composition using DXA in patients with RA.Methods:The study involved 79 women with RA, median age 60 [55; 65] years. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry using «Discovery A» (Hologic, USA). Assessment of body composition was carried out, using the program «Whole body». Sarcopenia (SP) was diagnosed as a decrease in appendicular mass index (AMI) <6.0 kg/m2. Osteoporosis (OP) was diagnosed as a decrease in T-score <-2.5 SD. Osteosarcopenia was determined when T-score was <-1.0 SD, AMI was <6.0 kg/m2, osteosarcopenic obesity - T-score was <-1.0 SD, AMI was <6.0 kg/m2and total fat was >35%.Results:The mean duration of RA was 9 [3; 11] years. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 27.6±4.8 kg/m2. Disease activity score in 28 joints-erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 4.5±1.3 points for the group. 39 (49.3%) patients used oral glucocorticoids continuously. Appendicular muscle mass and AMI were on average 17.8±3.0 kg and 6.8±1.0 kg/m2, respectively. AMI <6 kg/m2was detected in 20 (25.3%) patients. 56 (70.9%) women with RA had total fat > 35%, while only 22 (27.8%) of women with RA had obesity according to BMI (BMI >30 kg/m2). Isolated OP was found in 13 (16.5%), osteosarcopenia in 7 (8.9%) and osteosarcopenic obesity in 13 (16.5%) patients RA. No cases with isolated sarcopenia or sarcopenic obesity were detected. Only 3 (3.8%) patients did not have appendicular muscle mass, AMI and BMD decrease and overfat or obesity.Conclusion:About 97% women with RA had abnormal body composition phenotype: 16,5% - OP, 8.9% -osteosarcopenia, 16,5% - osteosarcopenic obesity and 54,4% - overfat.Disclosure of Interests:None declared

Abstract Background and Aims Changes in dietary phosphorus regulate serum FGF-23, parathyroid hormone, 1,25(OH)(2)D and Klotho concentrations . Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the principal killer of patients with chronic kidney disease and hyperphosphetemia is a potent risk factor it. Of many causative factors for CVD in CKD, dietary interventions involving restriction of dietary phosphorous intake can help reduce onset of CVD at early stages of CKD with other corrective measures. Muscle wasting is a consequence of uremic syndrome which alters body composition. The aim of the study was to study effect of dietary phosphorous restriction on FGF-23, iPTH, Klotho, 1,25(OH)(2)D and body composition in chronic kidney disease patients. Method This is a longitudinal study with 12 months intervention, approved by Ethics Committee of the institute. A total 132 subjects were recruited (66 healthy controls, 66 CKD patient. of 66 patients 33 were in CKD stage 1 and 33 in stage 2. GFR was calculated with the help of MDRD formula. Biochemical parameters of subjects were evaluated at baseline, 6 and 12 months along with the anthropometric measurements (body weight, height, mid upper arm circumference (MUAC), and skin folds). Three days dietary recall was taken to evaluate energy, protein and phosphorous intake. CKD patients whose dietary phosphorous intake was more than 1000 mg/day, were given intense dietary counseling and prescribed dietary modifications by restricting dietary phosphorous between 800-1000 mg/day. Results The mean age of controls and patients was 37.01±9.62 and 38.27±12.06 and eGFR of 136.94±11.77 and 83.69±17.37 respectively. One way ANOVA showed significant difference among controls and the study groups in hemoglobin (p&lt;0.001), s albumin (p&lt;0.001), FGF-23 (p&lt;0.001), klotho (p&lt;0.001), urinary protein (p&lt;0.001) and Nephron Index (p&lt;0.001).The mean energy intake (p = 0.001) and dietary phosphorous intake (p&lt;0.001) of the CKD patients decreased significantly with the decline in the renal function along with the anthropometric measures i.e. BMI (p = 0.041),WHR (p = 0.015) and all four skin folds (p&lt;0.001). On applying Pearson’s correlation, eGFR correlated negatively with urinary protein (-0.739, 0.000), FGF-23 (-0.679, 0.000) and serum phosphorous (-0.697, 0.000) and positively with klotho (0.872, 0.000). FGF-23 correlated negatively with klotho (-0.742, 0.000). Dietary phosphorous was found to be positively correlated with urinary protein (0.496, 0.000), serum phosphorous (0.680, 0.000) and FGF-23 (0.573, 0.000) and negatively with Klotho (-0.602, 0.000). Nephron index revealed a positive correlation with eGFR (0.529, 0.000). Urinary protein correlated negatively with klotho (-0.810, 0.000). A multiple linear regression was run to predict eGFR from anthropometric variables such as BMI, WHR, MUAC, skin folds thickness and handgrip strength. All anthropometric variables predicted decline in eGFR (p&lt;0.05, R2 =0.223). At 6 and 12 months; repeated ANOVAs analysis showed a statistically significant difference in serum creatinine (p=0.000), serum phosphorous (p=0.000), FGF-23(p=0.000) and klotho (p=0.000). Conclusion Elevated levels of FGF-23 and decreased Klotho levels, with the moderate decline in renal function improved with the restricted phosphorous diet at 6 and 12 months emphasizing the importance of phosphorus restriction at an early stage.

Abstract Background and Aims Overhydration (OH) is an independent predictor of mortality on hemodialysis (HD). The gold standard to assess OH is BCM monitor from Fresenius®, however BCM is a hospital hold device limiting its use. New smart scales have emerged as household devices reporting daily body composition data. Objective To determine if Renpho ES-CS20M® could be useful on a 52 HD patient to estimate body composition data. Method 72 body composition assessments (BCA) during mid-week HD session were performed. Each BCA included: (1) Predialysis Renpho measurement, (2) Predialysis BCM monitor measurement, (3) Postdialysis Renpho measurement. To track the fluid balance during the HD session: (1) we recorded ultrafiltration, (2) food or fluid intake was not allowed, and (3) none of the HD patients urinated during the HD session. If any intravenous fluids were needed during the HD session, we subtracted them off from UF. Results Data from 52 HD patients were studied (age 58.8 ± 16.8 years, 56.9 % males, 14.7% diabetics), with a mean pre-HD weight of 70.0 ± 13. 4 Kg, overhydration of 1.7 ± 1.5 L and urea distribution volume of 31.7 ± 5.7 L. The mean ultrafiltration during HD session was -1.8 ± 0.9 L. Renpho estimated a Pre – HD hydration of 34.25 ± 6.02 Kg vs 33.4 ± 5.7 Kg by BCM, showing a good concordance between methods (ICC 0.788 [0.67-0.86], B -0.58, p &lt;0.01). Renpho poorly estimated pre – HD lean tissue mass at 45.4 ± 6.9 Kg compared with 33.8 ± 8.0 Kg by BCM. Although Renpho was able to provide a moderate concordant estimation of fat tissue mass (33.8 ± 8.0 % with Renpho vs 34.7 ± 9.6%), the bias proportion was unacceptable. Post- HD hydration by Renpho was not able to reproduce the ultrafiltracion achieved during the HD session (pre-HD 34.25 ± 6.02 Kg vs post-HD 34.08 ± 6.00 Kg). Conclusion Renpho has a proportional bias estimating predialysis hydration compared with BCM monitor, but is not able to assess changes produced with ultrafiltration or other parameters of body composition (as lean or fat tissue mass). Although smart scales are unacurate to assess body composition on HD patients, they could be useful on the follow up of them changing the accuracy for frequency.

Background Malnutrition is a major global public health issue and its impact on communities and individuals is more dramatic in Sub-Saharan Africa, where it is compounded by widespread poverty and generalized high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Therefore, malnutrition should be addressed through a multisectorial approach, and malnourished individuals should have access to nutritional rehabilitation molecules that are affordable, accessible, rich in nutrient and efficient. We thus assessed the efficacy of two affordable and accessible nutritional supplements, spirulina platensis versus soya beans among malnourished HIV-infected adults. Methods Undernourished patients, naïve of, but eligible to antiretroviral treatment (ART), aged 18 to 35 years were enrolled and randomly assigned to two groups. The first group received spirulina (Group A) as food supplement and the second received soya beans (Group B). Patients were initiated ART simultaneously with supplements. Food supplements were auto-administered daily, the quantity being calculated according to weight to provide 1.5 g/kg body weight of proteins with 25% from supplements (spirulina and soya beans). Patients were monitored at baseline and followed-up during twelve weeks for anthropometric parameters, body composition, haemoglobin and serum albumin, CD4 count and viral load. Results Fifty-two patients were enrolled (Group A: 26 and Group B: 26). The mean age was 26.4 ± 4.9 years (Group A) and 28.7 ± 4.8 (Group B) with no significant difference between groups ( P = 0.10). After 12 weeks, weight and BMI significantly improved in both groups ( P < 0.001 within each group). The mean gain in weight and BMI in Group A and B were 4.8 vs. 6.5 kg, ( P = 0.68) and 1.3 vs. 1.90 Kg/m2, ( P = 0.82) respectively. In terms of body composition, fat free mass (FFM) did not significantly increase within each group (40.5 vs. 42.2 Kg, P = 0.56 for Group A; 39.2 vs. 39.0 Kg, P = 0.22 for Group B). But when compared between the two groups at the end of the trial, FFM was significantly higher in the spirulina group (42.2 vs. 39.0 Kg, P = 0.01). The haemoglobin level rose significantly within groups ( P < 0.001 for each group) with no difference between groups ( P = 0.77). Serum albumin level did not increase significantly within groups ( P < 0.90 vs. P < 0.82) with no difference between groups ( P = 0.39). The increase in CD4 cell count within groups was significant ( P < 0.01 in both groups), with a significantly higher CD4 count in the spirulina group compared to subjects on soya beans at the end of the study ( P = 0.02). Within each group, HIV viral load significantly reduced at the end of the study ( P < 0.001 and P = 0.04 for spirulina and soya beans groups respectively). Between the groups, the viral load was similar at baseline but significantly reduced in the spirulina group at the end of the study ( P = 0.02). Conclusion We therefore conclude in this preliminary study, firstly, that both spirulina and soja improve on nutritional status of malnourished HIV-infected patients but in terms of quality of nutritional improvement, subjects on spirulina were better off than subjects on soya beans. Secondly, nutritional rehabilitation improves on immune status with a consequent drop in viral load but further investigations on the antiviral effects of this alga and its clinical implications are strongly needed.

Background. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Obesity is associated with many chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and recently the role of overweight and obesity in lung disease has received new interest. Chronic obstructive lung disease is the third-leading cause of death globally, and both obesity and diet appear to play roles in its pathophysiology. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated an inverse association between obesity and the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Objective. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between smoking, lipid profile and obesity (body composition changes) in a selected groups of population (30 non-smokers, 30 smokers and 60 COPD patients). Material and Methods. We evaluated fat mass, fat free mass, body mass index and lipid profile in a group of 120 randomly selected probands (60 COPD patients; 30 smokers without COPD; 30 non-smokers without COPD) to identify possible negative relationships of smoking to body composition. To the measurement of fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) was used a device Bodystat Quadscan 4000 (Bodystat Ltd, British Isles). The device works by using four-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Laboratory parameters as total cholesterol (T-C), high-density cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C) and triacylglycerols (TG) were investigated by automated clinical chemistry analyzer LISA 200th. The measured values were statistically processed and evaluated in a statistical program STATISTICA Cz. Version 7.1. (Kruskall-Wallis test). Results. A comparison of the mean fat mass we found statistically highly significant differences between the group of COPD patients and non-smokers (P <0.001) and insignificant differences (P ≥ 0.05) between the other groups of our experiment. A comparison of the mean fat mass values of all three groups of the experiment shows a steady increase in fat from non-smokers (17.66 ± 10.04 kg) to COPD patients with the highest mean value (25.08 ± 10.14 kg). In the group of COPD patients we recorded the lowest average value of FFM (51.76 ± 13.84 kg), in group of smokers the middle (56.06 ± 10.76 kg) and in non-smokers the highest average value of FFM (59.91 ± 9.90 kg) at relatively the same body weight in the groups. Based on calculated body mass index (BMI), we found in group of COPD patients overweight in 15 cases (25%), obesity in 7 patients (11.67%), severe obesity in 14 patients (23.3%) and morbid obesity in 2 patients (3.33%); in the group of smokers overweight in 16 cases (53.33%), obesity in 5 cases (16.6%) and severe obesity in 1 case (3.33%); in non-smokers we recording overweight in 14 cases (46.67%), obesity in 5 cases (16.67%) and severe obesity in 2 cases (6.67%). In the lipid profile of the monitored groups of probands, we observed statistically significant differences only for LDL cholesterol (LDL-C). There was a statistically significant difference (P <0.001) between the group with COPD and smokers, as well as between the group of smokers and non-smokers (P < 0.05). Conclusions. In the vast majority of patients with COPD, the lung damage that leads to COPD is caused by long-term cigarette smoking. The presence and absence of risk factors such as smoking, inappropriate lipid profile and obesity (amount of fat mass) in selected population groups were observed. Additional studies to explore both the quantitative and qualitative changes in body composition with disease process of COPD are required.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the spinopelvic alignment and vertebral shape in children, and associations with body composition and structural spinal abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods We performed a cross-sectional study embedded in the Generation R Study, a prospective population-based birth cohort. Pelvic incidence and vertebral concavity ratios for each lumbar level were determined on sagittal MRI images in 9-year-old children, and structural spinal abnormalities were scored semi-quantitatively. The BMI-SD score was calculated, and body composition was assessed using DXA scans. Associations of pelvic incidence and vertebral concavity ratios with structural abnormalities and body composition measures were assessed using (multilevel) regression analyses. Results This study included 522 participants (47.7% boys), aged 9.9 years (IQR 9.7–10.0). The mean pelvic incidence was 36.6° (SD 8.0). Vertebral concavity ratios ranged from 0.87 to 0.90, with significantly lower ratios for boys compared to girls. Associations were found for a larger pelvic incidence with decreased disc height [OR 1.03 (95% CI 1.02–1.05)], and a pelvic incidence in the lowest tertile with less disc bulging [OR 0.73 (95% CI 0.56–0.95)]. Increased vertebral concavity ratio was associated with decreased disc height [OR 14.16 (95% CI 1.28–157.13)]. Finally, increased fat-free mass index was associated with a smaller pelvic incidence [adjusted OR 0.85 (95% CI 0.07–1.63)]. Conclusion The mean pelvic incidence of 9-year-old children is 36.6° on supine MRI images, and a slightly concave shape of the lumbar vertebrae is seen. Spinopelvic alignment is associated with structural spinal abnormalities, and might itself be influenced by the children’s body composition.

Abstract Background Malnutrition is a public health problem, as wasting affects 7.5% of children worldwide. The harmful effects of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) can last a lifetime, but how SAM in childhood affects later breastfeeding ability is not clear. In the present study, we assessed the human milk output and body composition among mothers with a history of childhood SAM. Methods This retrospective cohort study was carried out in Miti-Murhesa Health Zone (Democratic Republic of Congo) from January 15 to March 17, 2020. We selected lactating mothers with breastfed infants aged 2–12 months. Two categories of mothers were included: those who had been treated for SAM during their childhood (years 1988–2003; n = 39) and a community control with no history of SAM (n = 40). The weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference were measured and body mass index (BMI) calculated as weight/height2. Body composition and human milk output were assessed using standard deuterium dilution methods. Student t and chi2 tests ware applied to compare two groups. Results The mean age ± standard deviation of the mothers was 24.4 ± 5.1 and 26.0 ± 6.1 years for the SAM and control groups, respectively (p = 0.186). The age of their infants was 5.4 ± 2.3 months in both groups (p = 0.962). In the SAM and control groups, the mean maternal BMI was 23.8 ± 2.3 and 23.6 ± 3.7 kg/m2 (p = 0.849), mean Fat Mass 27.1% ± 5.0 and 27.1% ± 5.8% (p = 0.708), and the mean Fat Free mass 72.9% ± 5.0 and 72.9% ± 5.8% (p = 0.998), respectively. Human milk output was 833.7 ± 152.1 g/d in SAM group and 827.4 ± 171.4 g/d in the control group (p = 0.864). Conclusions We found no significant difference in human milk output and body composition in mothers treated for SAM during childhood compared to community controls.

Abstract Background While obesity has been correlated with welfare in the general population, there is not much data on the influence of body composition on welfare among the non-obese adult individuals. Methods A longitudinal, population-based study was conducted in 2017–2020. Body composition was assessed using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Welfare was rated with Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Euro Quality of Life Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results A total of 726 non-obese individuals from general population were analyzed. The mean age was 46.8 ± 15.4 years and 42.1% of participants were male. The mean value for SWLS was 23.09 ± 5.43, for EQ-VAS was 78.0 ± 14.5, and for BDI was 6.7 ± 6.6. On SWLS the waist-hip ratio had a negative impact even after adjustment for age, gender and concomitant diseases. EQ-VAS was inversely associated with android fat distribution and directly associated with muscle mass. BDI value was inversely associated with lower muscle mass, especially of the lower limbs. The well-being of women was mainly associated with the distribution of adipose tissue and less with the distribution of muscle tissue - abdominal fat distribution has a particularly negative impact on well-being among women. In contrast, men's well-being depends more on muscle mass and to a lesser extent on the distribution of fat tissue - a positive significant effect has lean mass and a circumference of thigh below gluteal fold. Conclusions Body composition is significantly associated with welfare in non-obese population. Android type fat distribution may have a negative impact while muscle mass positive.
