Growth and energy consumption by captive mallards
Keyword(s):
Weight change of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) reared in indoor cages was described by a modification of Richards's growth function that was compared with Gompertz and logistic growth equations. Growth of both sexes approximated the Gompertz curve. Maximum growth rate occurred at 2.5 weeks. Intake of metabolized energy increased from a mean of 49 kcal∙bird−1∙day−1 (1 cal = 4.1868 J) in the 1st week to 262 kcal during the 5th week, and then decreased as growth slowed.
