Acclimation of deer mice, white mice, and rats to lower temperatures progressively increased the time to death (resistance time), and lowered the temperature producing death in a given time (resistance temperature). A lower limit to acclimation was reached at 1° to −10 °C. for mice. Sex and body weight affected cold resistance to only a minor extent. Average lethal heat debts were 20 to 24 cal. per gm. for deer mice and white mice. Rats were more resistant than deer mice, and deer mice were more resistant than white mice to low temperatures. No difference in pelage insulation was found in deer mice acclimated to 10° or 30 °C.

Characteristics of cold acclimation in shaved New Zealand white adult rabbits kept individually at 6 °C for 3–5 weeks were (i) a 40% increase in food consumption, (ii) maintenance of body weight, (iii) a 45% increase in resting metabolism measured at 28 °C, (iv) an almost complete disappearance of shivering, (v) increased cold resistance, (vi) failure to cut off increased heat production when abruptly returned to 28 °C, and (vii) a maximum increase of 41% in oxygen consumption after noradrenaline infusion at 28 °C of doses varying between 1.18 and 9.44 μg/kg per min. Rats acclimated to 6 °C showed a maximum increase of 113% in their oxygen consumption when infused with similar doses of noradrenaline varying between 1.34 and 10.72 μg/kg per min. The conclusion is reached that in rabbits which usually rely on thick fur for protection against cold, the primary metabolic adjustments in these animals when they are shaved are a rise in basal metabolism and an increase of the same order in noradrenaline sensitivity.

ABSTRACT Metyrapone was administered either orally, 750 mg every four h, in a total of six doses, or intravenously 30 mg per kg body weight as a four h infusion. In three males with normal endocrine functions, metyrapone given orally or intravenously induced a fall in plasma testosterone and an elevation of androstenedione within 2–8 h. When metyrapone was administered to a patient given dexamethasone to suppress endogenous ACTH production, the androstenedione levels did not alter whereas the testosterone levels showed a slight, transient decrease. In two normal females metyrapone administration was followed by a marked increase in plasma androstenedione whereas testosterone showed only a minor, gradual increase. In one male patient with Addison's disease the basal plasma testosterone was normal whereas the level of androstenedione was low. Following metyrapone intravenously, there was a slight suppression of plasma testosterone but no change in the androstenedione concentration. In one patient with primary hypogonadism, two with secondary hypogonadism and two with Klinefelter's syndrome the plasma testosterone was low under basal conditions and did not change following metyrapone. Basal plasma androstenedione was within the range for normal males and increased markedly following metyrapone in all the cases.

The study of metals in impact bending and indentation is considered. A bench is developed for assessing the character of failure on the example of 45 steel at low temperatures using the classification of acoustic emission signal pulses and a trained artificial neural network. The results of fractographic studies of samples on impact bending correlate well with the results of pulse recognition in the acoustic emission signal. ABSTRACTThe Scottish Hydrometric Network consists of a number of river gauging stations which have been located at sites considered suitable to provide long term flow records. Economic recession has placed some stress on the gauging programme, and has given rise to extensive closures of gauging stations in England and, to a minor extent so far, in Scotland. The way in which the network became established provides a mixture of strengths and weaknesses which could have unpredictable consequences in an adverse economic climate. Changing technology provides some opportunity to reduce the cost of data acquisition and improve the deployment of manpower, while maintaining data standards. In these changing circumstances, particularly with extensive use of computer systems, it is important that standards are established for data returned to the Water Archive and that the network is not allowed to degenerate by default.

Abstract At present, in the New World, C. arizonica and its varieties are of low economic importance, but they are sometimes cut for fenceposts, fuelwood and lumber, and recently they have become popular as Christmas trees. By contrast, the Arizona cypress (C. arizonica var. arizonica) and the smooth cypress (C. arizonica var. glabra) are widespread in Europe and are used for landscaping, erosion control, windbreaks, and to a minor extent for lumber.

We examined body composition changes in 55 normal young men during an 8-wk Army combat leadership training course involving strenuous exercise and low energy intake, with an estimated energy deficit of 5.0 +/- 2.0 MJ/day and a resultant 15.7 +/- 3.1% weight loss. Percent body fat (BF) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) averaged 14.3% (range 6–26%) and 5.8 +/- 1.8% (range 4–11%) at the beginning and end of the course, respectively. Men who achieved a minimum percent BF (4–6%) by 6 wk demonstrated only small additional total and subcutaneous fat losses in the final 2 wk and sacrificed increasingly larger proportions of fat-free mass. Percent BF estimated from skinfold thicknesses reflected relative changes in fat mass, although actual percent BF was overestimated. Instead of reaching a plateau after fat stores were substantially depleted, abdominal, hip, and thigh girths continued to decline with body weight loss. Final percent BF for the leanest men was similar to that observed after a 25% body weight reduction in the 1950 Minnesota study (5.2% by underwater weighting), and height-corrected final fat mass was the same (1.0 +/- 0.2 vs. 0.9 +/- 0.7 kg fat/m2), suggesting that these values represent a minimal body fat content in healthy men and that weight loss subsequent to achieving this level is contributed from the fat-free mass. Our results suggest that 4–6% BF or approximately 2.5 kg fat represents the lower limit for healthy men, as assessed by DEXA or by underwater weighing.

The recovery in the OECD area gathered pace in the second quarter, when its total GDP probably increased by as much as 1 per cent. The rise was, however, heavily concentrated in North America and particularly the US. There may well have been a slight fall in Western Europe, where the level of industrial production hardly changed and increases in gross product in West Germany and, to a minor extent, in France were outweighed by falls in Italy and (according to the expenditure measure) the UK.

Activity of the antioxidant system is one of the mechanisms for the protection of plants against adverse environmental factors. Catalase - a primary antioxidant enzymes. Her change may serve as an indicator of plant resistance to stress. Studied catalase activity in tomato plants of different varieties under the action of low temperatures and cytokinin 6-BAP preparation. The object of investigation used 24- and 27-day-old tomato plant varieties Podarochnyi, Patrice, Volgogradskyi. Found that under the action of low temperatures, the decrease in positive catalase activity: 10-30% at 10 C and 40-60% at a temperature of 3 C as compared with non-refrigerated plants. Less resistant to hyperthermia were plant varieties Patrice. With increasing length of vegetation at a temperature of 25 C in 27-day-old tomato plants resulted in a minor increase in the activity of the enzyme. After the end of the cooling observed recovery of enzyme activity only at grades Podarochnyi and Patrice. This indicates that the indicated tomato varieties possess a high ability to restore metabolic processes. Using 6-regulator cytokinin BAP increased catalase activity in tomato plants as prolonged or momentary cooling. Especially responsive to the drug were plant varieties Patrice and Volgogradskyi. And 6-BAP helped repair catalase activity in 27-day-old plants in the aftereffect of cold stress. Were more sensitive plant varieties Podarochnyi.

Policies that aim at bringing about a digital transformation (seek to) create the conditions for particular spatial development trajectories. Yet, the understandings, explicit and implicit, of space advanced by digital agendas have remained rather underexposed to date. This paper addresses this gap by developing a Foucauldian-inspired discourse-analytical framework and applies it to the programme of ‘Digital Hungary’. It is argued that policies of digitalisation in Hungary only to a minor extent consider the spatial dimension, and their impact potentially undermines the declared aims of spatial development at different scales.

In the article, the bryophytes of the upper reaches of the Western Bug River, which is physically and geographically located within Male Polissya, partly Roztochia, and to a minor extent in the Gologoro-Voronyatsky denudo-structural hills, have been studied. Based on our survey, a list of the bryophytes has been compiled for the first time. Ecological features, substrate preferences and life forms of the bryophytes have been analysed. According to the ecological features, subheliophytes (30.9%) and hemisciophytes (30.9%) predominate in the spectrum of heliomorphs; mesophytes (29.7%), hygromesophytes (21.2%) and xeromesophytes – in the spectrum of hydromorphs (19.4%); cold-tolerant species (59.4%) – in the spectrum of thermomorphs. Based on the analysis of the substrate preferences of the bryophytes, the following groups were identified: epigeans (116 species), epixils (56 species), epiphytes (46 species), epiliths (43 species), aquatic (22 species). The prevailing life forms are turf (30.3%), rough mat (18.2%), weft (15.2%), tuft (10.3%) and smooth mat (9.7%). 3 species that are officially recognised as rare and 16 species that are recognized as regionally rare have been found. In the group of bryophytes associated with wetland ecosystems, 2 officially rare and 6 regionally rare species were found in the study area. Given the large areas of drained land in Lviv Region, these species are of particular value, especially in the context of conservation of the biodiversity and protection of the valuable natural areas in accordance with the Development Strategy of Lviv Region by 2027.
