The cerium(III) enolate derived from ethyl acetate was shown to undergo facile addition with ketones. With conjugated enones, 1,2-addition products were formed exclusively. Oxidative 1,3-oxygen transportation of these products provides an efficient route to synthetically useful β-ethoxycarbonylmethyl α,β-unsaturated ketones. Key words: cerium(III) ester enolate, addition, ketones.

Leaf, stem and roots of Thevetia peruviana (Pers) Schum. were extracted in four organic solvents; petroleum spirit, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol and tested against the adults of Callosobruchus maculatus F. All the tested extracts effectively produced mortality of C. maculatus and their toxicity was in order of solvents: petroleum spirit>ethyl acetate>acetone>methanol. Root extract was the most toxic to C. maculatus. Females were more tolerant than males. Key words: Extract, mortality, solvent, Thevetia peruviana, Callosobruchus maculatus. Two triterpenoids, phragmalin triacetate (1) and lupeol (2) were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the stem bark of Crataeva nurvala (Capparidaceae) by repeated chromatography over silica gel. The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic analyses (UV, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and EIMS). This is the first report of the systematic phytochemical investigation and the presence of these compounds 1 and 2 from this plant. Key words: Crataeva, Capparidaceae, Phragmalin triacetate and Lupeol.  DOI = 10.3329/dujps.v7i1.1221 Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Sci. 7(1): 71-74, 2008 (June)

A chemical investigation of the coprophilous fungus Cercophorasordarioides has led to the isolation of arthrinone (1), a known fungal metabolite, and three new related compounds: 1-dehydroxyarthrinone (2), 3a,9a-deoxy-3a-hydroxy-1-dehydroxyarthrinone (3), and cerdarin (4). These metabolites were obtained from antifungal ethyl acetate extracts of liquid cultures of C. sordarioides through bioassay-guided fractionation, and their structures were assigned on the basis of 1D-NMR, HMQC, and HMBC results. Compounds 2 and 4 exhibited anti-Candida activity. Key words: antifungal, fungal metabolite, natural product, Cercophorasordarioides.

3-?-hydroxy-28-acetyltaraxaren (1) and ?-sitosterol (2) were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the stem bark of Anogeissus latifolia. The ethyl acetate and methanol extracts when subjected to antimicrobial screening showed significant inhibitory activity to microbial growth, while the ethyl acetate showed demonstrated significant cytotoxicity to brine shrimp with LC50 of 0.50 ?g/ml. ABSTRACT Sembung Rambat (Mikania micrantha Kunth.) Is a climbing plant containing alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, tannins, terpenoids and rich in phenolic compounds. This aim was to determine the ability of extracts and fractions of sembung rambat leaves as coagulant. Extraction of fresh leaves of used maceration method with ethanol 96% as a solvent, ethanol extract fractionated used liquid-liquid extract method with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. Coagulant activity was measured by looking at the time of formation of fibrin yarn and the time of blood stops in theanimals test of White Mice (Deutschland, Denkenand and Yoken). Extracts with a dose of 60 mg / 20 g BB mice showed the best results of coagulant activity compared to other dose variations with the time of formation of fibrin yarn 77 seconds and blood stop time 86 seconds. The ethyl acetate fraction has the best coagulant activity compared to extracts and other fractions with fibrin yarn formed time 64 seconds and blood stop time 86 seconds. In conclusion, the extracts and fractions of sembung rambat have coagulant activity.  Key words: Coagulant, Mikania micrantha Kunth

Attempts were made to investigate different phytochemicals (secondary metabolites) of Clerodendron viscosum leaves extracts with different solvents e.g. petroleum ether (40-60° C), ethyl acetate and chloroform. The extracts were found to contain alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins and steroids. The extracts were then subjected to bioactivity against some stored grain insect such as Tribolium castaneus, Sitophiulus oryzae, Rhizopertha dominica using the method of residual film technique. Among the extracts, the petroleum ether extract showed higher toxicity against Sitophiulus oryzae and Rhizopertha dominica but moderate toxicity against Tribolium castaneus. The ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts showed moderate toxicity against Sitophiulus oryzae. The effectiveness of the order of toxicity of the extracts was found to vary with different intervals of treatments (24, 48 and 72 hours). The crude n-hexane and ethyl acetate extract of the stem bark of E. stricta were subjected to microbiological investigation and were found to be significantly inhibitory to microbial growth, with the average zone of inhibition 12–17 and 10–16 mm, respectively. In the cytotoxic observation, the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were found to show LC50 of 2.1 and 0.316 mg/ml respectively.
