In this study, the reclaimed soils in the Yunlin area of west Taiwan are adopted as test samples. The specimens were prepared by moist tamping at different relative densities and fines contents. Triaxial liquefaction tests were performed to evaluate the liquefaction strength and liquefaction-induced settlement. The test results show that the liquefaction strength of reclaimed soil increases as the relative density increases. In addition, under constant relative density, the liquefaction strength decreases as the fines content increases. Based on the test results and one-dimensional consolidation theory, the volumetric strain and settlement can be evaluated by dry density and fines content of the reclaimed soil. The results show that the settlement ratio decreases as the relative density increases. The figures and results can be references for the evaluation of liquefaction strength and liquefaction-induced settlement. The results are useful for liquefaction strength and settlement analysis for planning, design, and related research on land reclamation engineering.Key words: reclaimed soil, liquefaction resistance, fines content, settlement.

Soil liquefaction is one of the most complicated phenomena to assess in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The conventional procedures developed to determine the liquefaction potential of sandy soil deposits can be categorized into three main groups: Stress-based, strain-based, and energy-based procedures. The main advantage of the energy-based approach over the remaining two methods is the fact that it considers the effects of strain and stress concurrently unlike the stress or strain-based methods. Several liquefaction evaluation procedures and approaches have been developed relating the capacity energy to the initial soil parameters, such as the relative density, initial effective confining pressure, fine contents, and soil textural properties. In this study, based on the capacity energy database by Baziar et al. (2011), analyses have been carried out on a total of 405 previously published tests using soft computing approaches, including Ridge, Lasso & LassoCV, Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boost (XGBoost), and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) approaches, to assess the capacity energy required to trigger liquefaction in sand and silty sands. The results clearly prove the capability of the proposed models and the capacity energy concept to assess liquefaction resistance of soils. It is also proposed that these approaches should be used as cross-validation against each other. The result shows that the capacity energy is most sensitive to the relative density.

The literature presents several seemingly contradictory reports concerning the effects of non-plastic (i.e., silty) fines content on the liquefaction resistance of sands. These seemingly contradictory trends were reconciled in light of the results of a recent study by the authors that linked cyclic resistance and relative density. It was shown that the trend of decreasing cyclic resistance with increasing silt content reported in the literature could be explained by considering the soil's relative density. The same argument was made for the trend of decreasing and then increasing cyclic resistance with increasing silt content. The concept that cyclic resistance is controlled by the sand skeleton void ratio of the soil was also reconciled with the results of the authors’ previous study. The trend of increasing cyclic resistance (without a corresponding initial decrease) with increasing silt content that has been reported in the literature does not appear to occur in non-plastic silts.

A GCTS medium-sized triaxial apparatus is used to conduct a single-line method wetting test on three kinds of rockfill materials of different mother rocks such as mixture of sandstone and slate, and dolomite and granite, and the test stress conditions is the combination of spherical stress p and deviatoric stress q. The test results show that (1) for wetting shear strain, the effects of spherical stress p and deviatoric stress q are equivalent, and wetting shear strain and deviatoric stress q show the power function relationship preferably. (2) For wetting volumetric strain, the effect of deviatoric stress q can be neglected because it is extremely insignificant, and spherical stress p is the main influencing factor and shows the power function relationship preferably. (3) The wetting strains decrease significantly with the increase in initial water content and sample density generally, but the excessively high dry density will increase the wetting deformation. Also, the wetting strains will decrease with the increase in the saturated uniaxial compressive strength and average softening coefficient of the mother rock. Based on the test results, a wetting strain model is proposed for rockfill materials. The verification results indicate that the model satisfactorily reflects the development law of wetting deformation.

In this study, dynamic triaxial cyclic tests were conducted to examine the liquefaction properties and post-liquefaction volumetric strain of calcareous sand from a dredger fill site in the midst of the islands and reefs of the South China Sea. The test results indicated that there were some differences in micromorphology and composition between the calcareous sand obtained via dredging and natural calcareous sand. Axial cyclic stress attenuation can lead to higher cyclic vibration than actual liquefaction vibration, and the modified method can eliminate the effect of axial cyclic stress attenuation. Saturated calcareous sand liquefies under undrained and cyclic loading conditions, and the liquefaction resistance of the calcareous sand decreases with an increase of the effective confining pressure in the dense state. Calcareous sand obtained via dredging exhibited a higher liquefaction resistance compared with other types of calcareous sand. Furthermore, the proposed pore pressure development modified model better describes the pore pressure growth of the calcareous sand from the filling site. The fitting parameters of this model exhibited a high correlation with the relative density. Moreover, the post-liquefaction volumetric strain of the calcareous sand is larger than that of quartz sand, exhibiting a linear relationship with relative density.

The hydraulic placement of sand fill is one of the most important methods of land reclamation. During the reclamation process, losses of fines in sand are induced by the transportation of soil which affects the dynamic properties of the soil materials. In this study, the reclaimed soil in the Yunlin area of Taiwan is adopted as the test material. Different fines contents, different relative densities, and initial stress ratio were taken as test conditions. Resonant column tests were performed to evaluate the shear modulus and damping ratio of the reclaimed soil under initial shear stress. The results show that the maximum shear modulus decreases as the fines content increases. The influences of initial shear stress are discussed. A prediction method for maximum shear modulus under different fines content and initial shear stress is proposed based on empirical equations obtained. The results can be helpful for land reclamation design and assessment.Key words: reclaimed soil, fines content, initial shear stress, dynamic properties.

Soil-liquefaction-related hazards can damage structures or lead to an extensive loss of life and property. Therefore, the stability and safety of structures against soil liquefaction are essential for evaluation in earthquake design. In practice, the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure associated with numerical simulation analysis is the most used approach for evaluating the behavior of structures or the effectiveness of mitigation plans. First, the occurrence of soil liquefaction is evaluated using the simplified procedure. If soil liquefaction occurs, the resulting structural damage or the following mitigation plan is evaluated using the numerical simulation analysis. Rational and comparable evaluation results between the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure and the numerical simulation analysis are achieved by ensuring that the liquefaction constitutive model used in the numerical simulation has a consistent liquefaction resistance with the simplified liquefaction analysis procedure. In this study, two frequently used liquefaction constitutive models (Finn model and UBCSAND model) were calibrated by fitting the liquefaction triggering curves of most used simplified liquefaction analysis procedures (NCEER, HBF, JRA96, and T-Y procedures) in Taiwan via FLAC program. In addition, the responses of two calibrated models were compared and discussed to provide guidelines for selecting an appropriate liquefaction constitutive model in future projects.

According to Mengzi expansive soil, consolidated drained tests and undrained tests are carried on under saturated and remoulded conditions. The stress-strain characteristics of saturated soil are researched systematically under different confining pressure, initial dry density, initial water content, shearing rate and drainage condition. The inherent unity of diversity of shearing strength for the same samples measured by different experimental methods is indicated according to the normalization of critical state test results. And the failure lines in p ‘- q - ν space of remoulded saturated expansive soil under consolidated drained and undrained conditions are attained. The hyperbolic curve model can fit well the weak hardening stress-strain curves and the exponential curve model can fit the weak softening stress-strain curves. The test results can provide technical parameters and theoretical help for shearing strength variation of slope during rainfall and strength state of soil structure in normal water level.

The disposal of sewage sludge and other waste materials has become a problem in many cities around the world. A study on the use of sewage sludge and other waste materials for land reclamation has been conducted. One of the methods studied is to dispose of the sludge after it has been mixed with binders or other waste materials and then to consolidate the mixture on site using surcharge and prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs). To study the consolidation behaviour of the sludge–binder mixtures around PVDs, model tests using a fully instrumented consolidation tank were conducted. Some of the test results are presented in this paper. The study shows that PVDs are effective in consolidating the sludge and binder mixtures, provided that the PVDs used can sustain large bending and resist corrosion by the chemicals in the sludge.Key words: consolidation, geoenvironmental, land reclamation, prefabricated vertical drains.

A procedure for evaluating liquefaction resistance of soils based on the shear wave velocity measurements is outlined in the paper. The procedure follows the general formal of the Seed-Idriss simplified procedure. In addition, it was developed following suggestions from industry, researchers, and practitioners. The procedure correctly predicts moderate to high liquefaction potential for over 95% of the liquefaction case histories. The case study for the site of offshore wind farm in Jiangsu province is provided to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure. The feature of the soils and the shear wave velocity in-situ tested in site are discussed and the liquefaction potential of the layer is evaluated. The application shows that the layers of the non-cohesive soils in the depths 3-11m may be liquefiable according to the procedure.
