Fate and behavior of five chlorinated hydrocarbons in three natural waters

Water samples removed from two rivers and from the subtidal zone of Georgia Strait in British Columbia were treated with either 0.025 ppm of DDT, lindane, α-chlordane, or γ-chlordane, or 0.1 ppm Aroclor 1260 (PCB). The samples were incubated in the laboratory for up to 12 weeks at the temperatures of these natural waters at the time of sampling. Lindane persisted in all water samples throughout the experiment, but large proportions of the other compounds were transported into the atmosphere during incubation except when the containers were sealed. No metabolic breakdown could be demonstrated. As demonstrated with 14C-γ-chlordane, uneven distribution of the pesticides occurred rapidly, but was prevented, or reversed, by addition of a surfactant to the water. Total bacterial counts were generally higher in treated than in untreated water samples.

Water samples from the Fraser River and Georgia Strait, British Columbia were treated with different chlorinated hydrocarbons and incubated for up to 12 weeks at 13 C. 1) In the presence of bottom sediments from the same locations as the waters, no residues were found to escape into the atmosphere. 2) With the exception of lindane in ocean water, all detectable residues had moved into the sediments after 6 weeks. 3) Most of the lindane was metabolized. 4). Sterilization of the waters and sediments prevented the metabolism of lindane but had little effect on DDT and DDD. 5) Agitation of water samples containing γ-chlordane, incubated without sediment, had no effect on its disappearance, but the presence of 0.01% of a nonionic surfactant retarded this almost completely.

Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) smolts were captured from the outlet streams of Cultus Lake, British Columbia, in 1985 and 1986, and from Fraser Lake, British Columbia, in 1986. Samples collected in 1985 were reared in salt water. Samples collected from each lake in 1986 were divided equally into two groups: one group was reared in fresh water, the other was maintained in salt water. Initially biweekly, and later monthly, subsamples from each group were examined for seven parasite taxa: Myxidium salvelini, Diplostomulum sp. metacercaria, Phyllodistomum umblae, Eubothrium sp. (immature), Proteocephalus sp. (immature), Neoechinorhynchus salmonis, and Salmincola californiensis. The maximum life-span was greater than the duration of the experiments (32–40 weeks) for all species in hosts reared in fresh water (except for S. californiensis, which was removed from all freshwater hosts). Survival of M. salvelini, P. umblae, and S. californiensis was reduced in hosts reared in sea water. No differences in survival of each of Diplostomulum sp. metacercaria, Eubothrium sp., Proteocephalus sp., and N. salmonis were observed between hosts held in fresh water or salt water. Implications for the use of these parasites as natural tags are discussed.

The occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) was studied in the drinking water samples from urban water supply network of Karachi city that served more than 18 million people. Drinking water samples were collected from 58 locations in summer (May-August) and winter (November-February) seasons. The major constituent of THMs detected was chloroform in winter (92.34%) and summer (93.07%), while the other THMs determined at lower concentrations. Summer and winter concentrations of total THMs at places exceed the levels regulated by UEPA (80 μg l-1) and WHO (100 μg l-1). GIS linked temporal variability in two seasons showed significantly higher median concentration (2.5%-23.06%) of THMs compared to winter.

Tetralophozia setiformis is a widespread species occurring usually without organs of sexual and asexual reproduction. Gemmae of Tetralophozia setiformis were observed for the second time in Russia and Eurasia in the Northern Urals, Komi Republic. They form compact masses over upper leaves. The compact masses consist largely (70 %) of immature gemmae. Description of gemmae and gemmiparous shoots from the Northern Urals and their comparison with those from the other known localities, namely British Columbia (Canada) and the Murmansk Region (European Russia) were carried out. The gemmiparous plants of T. setiformis from the Northern Urals have approximately the same width as plants without gemmae but they are shorter. The leaves of gemmiparous plants from the Northern Urals are similar to leaves of gemmiparous plants from British Columbia. The leaf shape in upper part of the gemmiparous shoots varies from the typical to ± modified from gemmae production. These leaf shape transitions include reduction of leaf size and lobe number from 4 to 2–3, suppression of development and disappearance of characteristic teeth at the base of sinus. Gemmae size (17 × 22 μm) of plants from the Northern Urals is within variability recorded for plants from the Murmansk Region and British Columbia.

The introduction first sets out some preliminary definitions of sex, sexuality, and gender. It then turns from the sexual part of Sexual Identities to the identity part. A great deal of confusion results from failing to distinguish between identity in the sense of a category with which one identifies (categorial identity) and identity in the sense of a set of patterns that characterize one’s cognition, emotion, and behavior (practical identity). The second section gives a brief summary of this difference. The third and fourth sections sketch the relation of the book to social constructionism and queer theory, on the one hand, and evolutionary-cognitive approaches to sex, sexuality, and gender, on the other. The fifth section outlines the value of literature in not only illustrating, but advancing a research program in sex, sexuality, and gender identity. Finally, the introduction provides an overview of the chapters in this volume.

Much has been written of William Duncan, "the Apostle of Alaska", who came to the coast of northern British Columbia in 1857 as a missionary to the Tsimshian Indians. Although he deplored it, in the course of his sixty years' residence in this area controversy raged around him as a result of his clashes with church and state, and his work has been the subject of numerous investigations, both public and private. His enemies have called him a tyrant and a ruthless exploiter of the Indians under his control; and there are men still living who find a disproportionate amount of evil in the good that he did, especially during the declining years of his long life. On the other hand, he has had ardent and articulate supporters who have written numerous articles and no less than three books in praise of his self-sacrificing ideals and the soundness of his program for civilizing the Indian.

Water samples were collected on Lake Ontario during April and November, filtered (0.45 μm), and immediately analyzed onboard ship for the nutrients soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrate-plus-nitrite, and ammonia. Replicates were stored in glass bottles at 4 °C and reanalyzed within 8 d. Statistical analysis showed that soluble reactive phosphorus decreased by 11 and 13% and nitrate-plus-nitrite by 7 and 6%, whereas ammonia increased by 75% on one cruise and decreased by 37% on the other.
