Correction factors for nonlinear runup and wave forces on a large cylinder

A recently developed numerical method for second-order wave diffraction is summarized and is used to develop a simplified approach to predicting nonlinear runup and maximum wave loads for large coastal and offshore structures subjected to regular waves. The perturbation method on which the method is based is extended to provide correction factors for the runup and maximum loads. These correction factors apply directly to the predictions of linear diffraction theory, and are independent of the wave height. The correction factors for runup, maximum force and maximum overturning moment are provided for a range of geometric parameters relating to the case of a large circular cylinder extending from the seabed to the free surface. Nonlinear runup and load maxima calculated by the correction factors are compared with the results of previous experimental studies; in general, favourable agreement is obtained. An example application of the proposed procedure is provided, the importance of nonlinear effects in the evaluation of runup and wave loads is discussed, and the limitations of the results are indicated. The dynamic characteristics of large-scale tunnel element are very important for the process of immersion. In the paper, the motions and stress of the element under wave actions were studied. The linear wave diffraction theory and the three-dimensional source distribution method were applied to calculate the wave loads and motion responses of the tunnel element under different incident wave conditions. In the study, there have no cable on the element. On the basis of the above theories, the stress and the motions of the element were studied. The first order wave forces and the second order wave force were deduced, and the motions equation was made.

Nonlinear wave forces on a surface-piercing vertical circular cylinder are considered using a time-stepping method previously developed which is based on Green's theorem. Possible improvements in the efficiency, accuracy, and stability of the method are considered. Results based on this method are compared with those obtained previously using perturbation methods as well as with experimental results. It is found that the time-stepping method adopted here is quite reasonable. Wave force coefficients are given as functions of the governing parameters of the problem and the importance of nonlinear wave effects on the forces is assessed. As the demand for offshore wind energy continues to grow, the strive to understand the wave forces acting on the substructure of the wind turbines continues. In regard to wind turbine design, it is vital to consider not only the total wave force, but also the local wave forces. Local forces are particularly important for the design of secondary structures as e.g. mooring platforms. Typically, however, experimental studies mainly concern total forces or idealized local forces. We present here a rather simple way to measure local forces along a model monopile. The study is conducted in a wave flume of 28 m in length, in which waves are generated by a piston-type wave maker at a water depth of 0.515 m and shoal onto a bed of slope 1:25. A model monopile is installed and subjected to forcing from a series of both regular and irregular waves. In the experimental set-up, the model monopile is fixed at the bottom and the top and consists of seven independent cylindrical sections. The cylindrical sections are connected by force transducers which measure local shear, and so the associated local forces may be determined. The measured local forces are compared to the force distribution given by Morisons equation combined with linear theory and Wheeler stretching, which is a force estimate commonly used in the industry. This study shows that the total force is rather well captured by Morison’s equation. The force distribution estimated from Morison’s equation, however, shows larger discrepancies from the measured forces. This encourages for further measurements. In this study, we show that it is possible to measure force distribution on a model monopile in a simple and cost-effective manner. The aim is here to demonstrate the method and we will later present a larger body of work associated with the outcome of the measurements.

As the offshore fixed wind turbine developed, more ones will be installed in the sea field with the depth 15–50 meters. Wave force will be one of the main forces that dominate the design of the wind turbine base, which is calculated using the Morison equation traditionally. This method can predict the wave forces for the small cylinders if the drag and inertia coefficients are obtained accurately. This paper will give a series scaled tests of monopile and jacket type base of the offshore wind turbine in tank to study the nonlinear wave loads.

Abstract Generally, numerous marine and offshore structures are composed of a number of modules which introduce narrow gaps between the multi-modules arranged side by side. The interaction between water waves and floating structures excites complex wave runup in the gaps and wave forces on the adjacent modules. In this study, free surface oscillations in twin narrow gaps between identical floating rectangular boxes are investigated by establishing a 2D viscous flow numerical wave tank based on a Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP) method. The Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing (THINC) method is employed to capture the free surface. The rigid floating bodies are treated by a Virtual Particle Method (VPM). The incident waves are generated by an internal wave maker. For the fixed module cases, the computational results of wave height in narrow gaps are found in good coincidence with the available experimental measurements, especially for the resonant frequencies. The wave forces on the floating bodies are calculated numerically. The characteristic response of wave forces on the leading and rear bodies are consistent with the free surface elevations in the corresponding narrow gaps. With shallow draft, the gap resonance occurs at higher wave number.

For the estimation of wave loads on offshore structures, relevant extreme wave events need to be identified. In order to achieve this, long-term wave simulations of relatively large scales need to be performed. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based numerical wave tanks with an interface capturing two-phase flow approach typically require too large computational resources. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) nonhydrostatic wave model is presented, which solves the Navier–Stokes equations and employs an interface tracking method based on the continuity of the horizontal velocities along the vertical water column. With this approach, relatively fewer cells are needed in the vicinity of the air–water interface compared to CFD-based numerical wave tanks. The numerical model solves the governing equations on a rectilinear grid, which allows for the employment of high-order finite differences. The capabilities of the new wave model are presented by comparing the wave propagation in the tank with the CFD approach in a two-dimensional (2D) simulation. Further, a 3D simulation is carried out to determine the wave forces on a vertical cylinder. The calculated wave forces using the new approach are compared to those obtained using the CFD approach and experimental data. It is seen that the new approach provides a similar accuracy to that from the CFD approach while providing a large reduction in the time taken for the simulation. The gain is calculated to be about 4.5 for the 2D simulation and about 7.1 for the 3D simulation.

The various effects that influence loads acting on a large offshore structure due to the combination of waves and currents are reviewed. These may be broadly associated with potential flow effects and viscous effects. The potential flow effects are nonlinear and may generally be investigated by perturbation or time-stepping methods. Viscous effects include the onset of flow separation, which affects the validity of the assumed potential flow, as well as steady and oscillatory forces. The fluid mechanics of the complete wave–current–structure interaction problem are not yet well understood and areas in need of additional research are identified. Fixed offshore platforms supported by pile foundations are required to resist dynamic lateral loading due to wave forces. The response of a jacket offshore tower is affected by the flexibility and nonlinear behavior of the supporting piles. In this study, a typical fixed offshore platform is chosen, and dynamic wave analysis is performed on it. Analysis has been performed for normal environmental conditions and extreme conditions. For the foundation, the deflections and reactions at regular intervals along the vertical direction from the seabed have been found out from the dynamic analysis, and the results have been compared for normal and extreme conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the combined lateral and vertical loads on pile group foundation of a fixed offshore structure and the effects of seabed slope on the pile responses. To provide a more accurate and effective design for offshore pile foundation systems under axial structural loads and lateral wave loads, a finite element model which is modelled in FLAC3D is employed herein to determine the soil structure interaction under similar loading conditions. Three dimensional modelling and the analyses are done using FLAC3D — a finite element package.

Abstract A probability distribution, which incorporates the random occurrence of wave heights and the uncertainty in the force coefficients of the Morison equation, was derived for the forces on offshore structures. The random occurrence of wave heights was assumed to be described by a Weibull distribution, and the uncertainty in the force coefficients was assumed to be represented by a normal distribution. Wave force was assumed to be proportional to wave height raised to a power. The assumed distributions and force relationship may not describe exactly the actual problem within a general framework, but the assumptions are believed to be applicable to the range of wave heights and conditions occurring for the selection of static design criteria for the forces on offshore structures. The applicability of the assumptions is enhanced because the primary results are expressed as ratios, which require only relative accuracy and not quantitative accuracy. Introduction The wave forces on an offshore structure are determined by a wave theory (e.g., Stokes or stream function) that relates the water kinematics (velocity and acceleration) to the wave parameters (height and period) and a theory that relates the resulting pressures on the structure to the predicted water kinematics (e.g., the Morison equation or refraction theory). Generally, the Morison equation, which incorporates two force coefficients - the drag and inertia coefficients - is used. The wave parameters experienced by a structure during a storm are random. Also, inferred values of the force coefficients from field measurements indicate a random scatter from wave to wave caused by the random nature of the processes involved and imperfect wave and hydrodynamic theories. Therefore, the prediction of wave forces and, ultimately, the selection of design criteria for offshore structures involve both the random nature of the wave parameters (e.g., height) and the uncertainty in the force coefficients. Procedures for selecting wave heights for design criteria have received considerable attention and are well established; however, the problem of considering the uncertainty in the force coefficients has received little attention. Currently, there is no rational procedure to account generally for coefficient uncertainty except to use arbitrary, and potentially unrealistic, guidelines, such as the mean value plus a multiple of the standard deviation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a rational framework for dealing with the uncertainty in force coefficients. This framework is statistical and incorporates into the force statistics the uncertainty of the force coefficients and the random occurrence of the wave parameters. Background The wave force, Q, on an offshore structure is generally determined by the Morison equation,Equation 1 QD and QI are defined as the drag and inertia forces, respectively, per unit length acting normal to a structural element; CD and CI are the drag and inertia coefficients (i.e., the force coefficients); v and v are the water velocity and acceleration normal to the element; d is the element diameter; and ?w is the mass density of water.

When semi-submersibles are floating at shallow draft, only a relatively thin layer of water may be present above the floaters. Model tests and full scale observations have shown that in such cases, even in low waves, non-linear effects significantly influence the wave pattern around the floaters. These non-linear effects make conventional methods based on linear diffraction theory less reliable for the calculation of wave forces and internal loads on a semi-submersible at shallow draft. This paper describes and analyzes the non-linear hydrodynamics affecting the wave loads and internal loads at shallow draft. The feasibility of both ComFLOW and linear diffraction method for the calculation of these loads are assessed. CFD simulations were performed using ComFLOW, a program based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the improved Volume Of Fluid (iVOF) method. First, the wave loads acting on a fixed semi-submersible in regular waves were calculated with ComFLOW and compared with linear diffraction theory and model tests. Secondly, internal loads were calculated for a moving semi-submersible in regular waves using both ComFLOW and linear diffraction theory. In the ComFLOW simulations, the motions of the semi-submersible were prescribed instead of solved by the method itself. Calculations and comparisons were performed for deep draft and shallow draft conditions. The wave loads on the semi-submersible for shallow draft conditions derived with ComFLOW were reasonably close to the results from model testing, while the results from the linear diffraction method showed significant deviations from the model tests results. The internal loads calculated with ComFLOW were quite close to the results from the linear method, even for shallow draft conditions. Additional model testing is required for validation of the internal loads.
