A comparison of individual, family, and index selection methods in Tribolium castaneum

Seven replicates of single-generation selection were used to compare genetic gain in Tribolium castaneum, using methods based on information from individuals, full-sib families, or both. Realized responses in pupa weight were greater when selection was applied in the downward as opposed to the upward direction. Although the contrasts were not all significant, the observed response in the upward direction agreed with theoretical expectations where the ranking of methods was combined first, family second, and individual last. In the downward direction, response based on the family method was below expectations, and the combined method yielded results close to those for selection based on individuals.Key words: selection methods, Tribolium, asymmetric response.

Genetic gain and average coancestry or status number was investigated for five selection methods: penalty index selection (PIS), family index selection (FIS), combined between-family and within-family selection (CBW), restricted individual selection (RIS), and combined index selection (RCS). PIS was a function of an individual's breeding value and family contributions, modelled as a stepwise procedure to select superior individuals one by one. A penalty would indicate the need to have low average coancestry or large status number. Breeding populations of unrelated families were investigated by Monte Carlo simulation to examine the genetic response of the five selection methods at a restricted selection intensity and average coancestry. PIS attained the greatest genetic gain, except at the selection limits of maximum genetic gain and minimum average coancestry where PIS might be identical to the other selection methods. FIS and RCS well approximated PIS at high average coancestry. RIS was similar to RCS when the heritability was high, particularly at low average coancestry. CBW attained the least genetic gain among the selection methods. For all selections, high heritability would contribute to a greater genetic gain and status number or low average coancestry. PIS was applied to a practical breeding program in Alberta that included several subpopulations. The results suggested that the selection efficiency for balancing genetic gain and average coancestry would increase when deploying a subpopulation strategy for breeding population management.

Results obtained by Young for the expectation of genetic gain in an arbitrary linear function of several traits under selection by independent culling levels, under tandem selection, and under index selection have been obtained in slightly more general form and their dependence on basic genetic and phenotypic parameters exhibited. A warning is given about the effects of selection in modifying the distribution of traits; when the distribution has become appreciably non-normal, any calculation of genetic gains from formulae based on normality will tend to overestimation.

    The research aims to study the impact of unemployment on the social conditions in the Palestinian society from the point of view of the unemployed youth, especially in the current time period (2019), the researcher used the descriptive analytical method, and the research community consists of young people in the governorate of Ramallah. The researcher used the questionnaire tool, and the data were analyzed by the analysis program (SPSS). It was found that the majority of youth are unemployed, they are middle age, single and large families, urban residents, people with specialties and low income. As for the results of the research, there was an increase in the impact of the forms of unemployment on the social conditions of the individual, family and society and their outlook towards the future, came the highest degree on the social conditions of the individual (6. 90%) and then the social conditions of the family (3. 83%), Followed by the societal conditions to reach the value (78%), came the lowest values ​​for the outlook for the future, which amounted to (67%). Some of the features of the impact of unemployment, including the tension, anxiety and frustration of the young group. As for the nature of the relationship between the variables of the study, there was a statistically significant relationship between the combined unemployment and the low income, between the apparent, persuasive and compulsory unemployment, and the individual, family and societal situations and the outlook for them. At the end of the research a number of recommendations were made, most notably the need to balance the types of education and activate the social and cultural role of the family.

A selection index (I) method was compared with independent culling levels (N), with a restriction in the selection program, using two replicated single generation experiments in Tribolium castaneum, which are considered forms of antagonistic selection. The first experiment was designed to increase adult weight without changing pupal weight, while the second experiment was intended to improve egg laying without changing adult weight. In both experiments the genetic correlation between the traits involved were positive but were higher in experiment 1 than in experiment 2. The proportion of selection was 10%. In experiment 1, the effect of restriction was as expected in both lines since the changes in pupal weight were not significant. Adult weight change was positive for the I line and negative for the N line, showing that the index was a superior method to improve adult weight. In experiment 2, the effect of restriction was also as expected in both lines and changes in adult weight were not significant. Egg laying changed positively in both lines. Therefore, both selection methods were similar in this experiment, even though egg laying change was higher in the I than the N line. Discourses of intensive mothering now seem to dominate European and American parenting cultures. This is a problem for those mothers who do not currently possess the resources to match up. In a study of Italian and British mothers who are experiencing low or reduced incomes, we observe the ways in which they internalize intensive mothering discourses through a process of ethical self-formation. This mode of self-formation involves detailed self-surveillance and self-discipline and abnegation of their own needs in place of other individual family members, and the family as a whole. We find a series of contradictory emotional effects which generate both pride and self-worth but also stress and anxiety. We advance the theory that mothers operate within an optimistic affective regime to make sense of these contradictory effects and retain a sense of agency and control over their lives and those of their families. However, drawing on Berlant’s concept of cruel optimism, we argue that such affective regimes may be very pernicious in their effects, only serving to hold mothers in a relation that is ultimately impassable and often unfulfilling.

Although failure to account for spatial autocorrelation has been dramatic in some forest progeny trials, little attention has been paid to how this issue may affect selections within the trials. The effects of spatial autocorrelation of height growth on the estimation of genetic gain and on the spatial distribution of the selected trees were studied in four Pinus pinaster Ait. progeny trials that were rogued using different selection methods and intensities. When selections are based on unadjusted original values, selected trees tend to be located in the best microsites and are unlikely to be the most genetically superior. This resulted in a loss of genetic gain that varied between 10% and 20% and sometimes exceeded 30%. Differences in the loss of gain among different selection methods and intensities were minor and followed no clear pattern. Selecting on the basis of a conventional model resulted in spatial patterns of the retained trees that were clearly aggregated in all cases. However, selections based on spatially adjusted data resulted in random spatial patterns, except with family selection because of the use of multiple-tree plots. Because clumping of the retained trees may seriously affect the quantity and quality of the seed crop, breeders are strongly encouraged to use appropriate spatial models for roguing breeding seedling orchards.

For almost thirty years after the development of family therapy, the concurrent use of family and individual psychotherapy was seen as incompatible by leading proponents of each modality. Although recently the literature has revealed an increased willingness to utilize family and individual therapies concurrently, the decision for or against any such combination has been left largely to the intuition or bias of the individual clinician. This paper suggests the concurrent use of family and individual psychotherapies when disturbances of family structure and interaction co-exist with, reinforce, and are maintained by largely ego-syntonic internalized psychopathology (that is, the character defences of individual family members). It provides a rationale for integrating the concurrent therapies, and uses clinical examples to illustrate how each can potentiate the other. There is a discussion of indications and contraindications for the integrated use of concurrent family and individual therapy. From their attempts to apply these principles, the authors conclude that the experience for the family, the individual and the therapists is that the selective and integrated use of concurrent family and individual therapies can achieve more than can either therapy alone — the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

A genetic improvement project for black spruce (Piceamariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) was initiated in Minnesota in 1974, with an objective of improving the inherent growth rate of the local population. This study reports some field results from the initial phase of the project. Study objectives were to (i) estimate genetic and environmental variance components of early (age 10 years) tree height, (ii) estimate expected genetic gains from various selection methods in three seedling seed orchards and a clonal seed orchard, and (iii) evaluate the effect that these selection methods have on inbreeding levels in the rogued seedling orchards. Additive genetic variance accounted for 15 to 22% of the phenotypic variance in three wind-pollinated family tests and 10% of the phenotypic variance across the tests. Expected gains from combined-index (family and individual) selection in the family test - seed orchards (selection of 22 to 27%) ranged from 4.6 to 6.1%. Family + within-family selection and individual selection were 18 and 32% less efficient, respectively. Index selection resulted in the highest estimated levels of inbreeding in the rogued orchards. However, the largest difference between the various selection methods resulted in a difference in the average inbreeding coefficient of less than 0.15%. Based on this small difference, index selection could be used in roguing similarly designed seedling seed orchards with minimal risk of elevated inbreeding levels.

A disability experienced by one family member impacts on all individuals in the family unit and influences their typical pattern of interaction. The process of individual and family adjustment to disability, a family crisis, is seen in a case study of Sam and his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. The individual, family and social adjustment issues, including redefinition of family, social, sexual and work roles, are examined in a real live context. Tentative recommendations for professionals working with families in which an individual becomes disabled are developed from personal interviews with Sam and his family.
