Fry from Atlantic salmon taken in Chaleur bay, near the mouth of the Restigouche river, N.B., where the salmon enter early in the summer and mainly as two-sea-year and three-sea-year fish, were planted in 1932 in the East branch (without salmon) of the Apple river at the head of the bay of Fundy. In this region the local salmon enter only in the autumn and nearly all as one-sea-year fish (grilse). The Restigouche fish as parr grew more rapidly than the local fish, corresponding with the less crowded conditions in the East branch. The smolts were marked by removal of the adipose fin when descending to the sea in 1934. Their descent occurred from May 12 to June 20, being markedly accelerated by rainfall. Traps were placed on both branches in 1935, giving in the autumn 92 marked grilse entering the East branch and 6 the South. The traps in 1936 gave in the autumn, 5 marked two-sea-year salmon entering the East branch and 1 the South. No difference in appearance or behaviour was observable between these and the local salmon of the South branch.

Abstract We sonically tagged and released farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from a cage site in Cobscook Bay, Maine, USA. The fish were released in January (n = 75) and in April and May (n = 198) 2004 to study their movement patterns and survival and to assess the possibility of recapturing them. Inshore and offshore waters in this region are subject to intense tidal currents. Tagged salmon dispersed >1 km from the cage site within a few hours of their release. Mortality was high within Cobscook Bay and the surrounding coastal region (56% of the winter (January) releases; 84% of the spring (March) releases), probably the result of seal predation. Most surviving fish exited the coastal zone and entered the Bay of Fundy along the routes of the dominant tidal currents, passing through Canadian waters. No tagged fish were detected during the wild salmon spawning season in autumn 2004 in any of the 43 monitored salmon rivers draining into the Bay of Fundy, or during 2005 either in the Magaguadavic River, the site of the hatchery in which the fish were reared to the smolt stage, or by a limited coastal receiver array.

In his “Acadian Geology” (1868, 2nd ed., p. 563) Sir William Dawson figures Dictyonema Websteri and places it as a Silurian (Upper Silurian) species. In describing the slates from which the type-specimens of this species were obtained he writes:—“Passing from the Cobequid Mountains to the slate hills of the south side of the Bay” (meaning the Bay of Fundy), “in King's County, we find slates not very dissimilar from those of the Cobequids” (which he had described on the previous page, 562), “in the promontory northward of the Gaspereau River. Here the direction both of the bedding and of the slate structure is N.E. and S.W.; but the planes of cleavage dip to the S.E., while the bedding, as indicated by lines of different colour, dips to the N.W. These slates, with the quartzite and coarse limestones, are continued in the hills of New Canaan, where they contain crinoidal joints, fossil shells, corals, and in some beds of fawn-coloured slate beautiful fan-like expansions of the pretty Dictyonema, represented in fig. 196; very fine specimens of this fossil were found by the late Dr. Webster of Kentville. It was the habitation of thousands of minute polypes, similar apparently to those of the modern Sertularia. The general strike of the rocks in New Canaan is N.E. and S.W., and they extend from that place westward to the Nictaux River.

Atlantic salmon, smelt, alewives, shad, eastern brook trout, and introduced brown trout occur in waters that will be affected by the Passamaquoddy power project. The first four species are taken occasionally in herring weirs but total annual landed values did not exceed $6,000 in the period 1937 to 1956. Salmon and trout have high potential value for angling, subject to improvements in local river management.Construction of tidal power dams should overcome the present lack of typical estuarine conditions in the Passamaquoddy area and favour production of anadromous species. An improved sport fishery for sea-run trout could develop. Realization of the potential production of Atlantic salmon, alewives and shad, but possibly not sea-run trout, would depend on satisfactory access from the Bay of Fundy to the impounded areas.

Abstract Cultured Atlantic salmon smolts were treated with Slice®, orally administered emamectin benzoate, before release in the Dale River, western Norway, to study the potential effects of sea lice during the early stages of their marine phase. In all, 10 470 treated and untreated (control) fish from ten family groups were adipose fin-clipped, coded-wire tagged, and released on three different dates in 2002 (11 May, 25 May, and 7 June), which coincided with the natural smolt run. The percentage of released smolts recaptured as one-sea-winter salmon in 2003 did not differ between the treated and untreated groups released on the two dates in May 2002, but the recapture rate of fish from the treated group released on 7 June 2002 was almost twice that of the controls. The weights of the recaptured one-sea-winter salmon tended to decline from the first to the third release date, and one-sea-winter salmon from the treated groups were approximately 15% heavier than the controls. The difference in recapture rate between the treated and untreated groups increased after inclusion of the two-sea-winter and three-sea-winter salmon recaptured in 2004 and 2005, respectively. We conclude that the infestation level of salmon lice changed from non-lethal to lethal levels during the period of the smolt migration in 2002 and that non-lethal infestation levels may adversely affect Atlantic salmon populations by reducing the growth rate of fish and, consequently, their size at spawning.

The occurrence of Caligus elongatus on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cultured in marine waters in the Passamaquoddy Bay region of the lower Bay of Fundy is reported. Two size classes of cultured salmon (smolts and market size) were examined. Prevalence of C. elongatus was 54.5% on market fish and 54.7% on smolts. Intensities of infection for market fish and smolts were recorded as 2.41 and 2.58, respectively. Overall sex ratio of adult C. elongatus on infected salmon was 1:1.4 females to males; mean number of eggs per gravid female C. elongatus was 169.

Telemetry is increasingly being used to estimate population-level survival rates. However, these estimates may be affected by the detectability of telemetry tags and are reliant on the assumption that telemetry data represent the movements of the tagged fish. Predation on tagged fish has the potential to bias survival estimates, and unlike the issue of detectability, methods to correct for the resulting bias (termed “predation bias”) are not yet developed. In an acoustic telemetry study on inner Bay of Fundy Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts during 2008 and 2011, unusual tag detection patterns were indicative that some data may have been representative of the movements of predators rather than smolts. To incorporate predation effects into the resulting survival estimates, a suite of 11 summary migration metrics were compared between Atlantic salmon smolts and striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Cluster analyses revealed that 2.4% to 13.6% of tags implanted in smolts exhibited migration patterns more similar to striped bass than to other smolts, which was interpreted here as evidence of predation. Reassigning the fate of these tags as “depredated–died” reduced estimated survival from 43.5% to 41.1% in 2008 and from 32.6% to 19.0% in 2011 relative to a traditional mark–recapture model, illustrating the effect of predation bias in this case study.

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) postsmolts surveyed by surface trawling in the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine during 2001–2003 were aggregated in several areas in the Bay of Fundy and dispersed over a broader area in the Gulf of Maine. Postsmolt distribution reflected the major surface-current vectors and was independent of origin (wild vs. hatchery, inner vs. outer Bay of Fundy). Migration proceeded without disruption, and marked wild postsmolts from both the inner and outer Bay of Fundy were recaptured in the outer Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine, where their distribution overlapped the commercial fishery for Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). Marked postsmolts of wild origin were recaptured more frequently than those of hatchery origin but the overall density was low, and no schools of postsmolts were encountered that could offer protection from predators. Temperature and salinity in postsmolt habitat were favourable for growth and survival. Postsmolts were in excellent condition and had no bacterial or viral pathogens or salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). They were feeding on pelagic prey (amphipods, euphausiids, and fish larvae) and the period of accelerated marine growth had started, indicating that environmental conditions and food supply were not limiting growth and survival.
