Certain components of Wildiers' Bios complex, fractionated and concentrated according to the procedure of Miller and co-workers, were found capable of replacing the stimulative action of yeast extract on strains of Rhizobium trifolii, as measured by acid production. Bios I was inactive, while Bios II B, V, and II A possessed definite activity, the potency of the fractions increasing in the order named. Moreover, the ability of these fractions to increase hydrolysis of urea by urease was in direct proportion to the stimulative effect exerted by them on the Rhizobia. These effects could not be brought about in synthetic media by the addition of crystalline vitamin B1, nicotinic acid, uracil, choline, β-alanine, carnosine, β-indole acetic and β-indole butyric acids, glutathione, cysteine and vitamin C.

In this study dairy sludge was evaluated as an alternative cultivation medium forRhizobium. Growth of bacterial strains at different concentrations of Dairy sludge was monitored. Maximum growth of all strains was observed at 60% Dairy sludge concentration. At 60% optical density (OD) values are 0.804 forRhizobium trifolii(MTCC905), 0.825 forRhizobium trifolii(MTCC906), and 0.793 forRhizobium meliloti(MTCC100). Growth pattern of strains was observed at 60% Dairy sludge along with different synthetic media (tryptone yeast,Rhizobiumminimal medium and yeast extract mannitol). Growth in 60% Dairy sludge was found to be superior to standard media used forRhizobium. Media were optimized using 60% dairy sludge along with different concentrations of yeast extract (1–7 g/L) and mannitol (7–13 g/L) in terms of optical density at different time intervals, that is, 24, 48 and 72 hours. Maximum growth was observed in 6 g/L of yeast extract and 12 g/L of mannitol at 48-hour incubation period in all strains. The important environmental parameters such as pH were optimized using 60% dairy sludge, 60% dairy sludge +6 g/L yeast extract, and 60% dairy sludge +12 g/L mannitol. The maximum growth of all strains was found at pH 7.0. The present study recommends the use of 60% dairy sludge as a suitable growth medum for inoculant production.

AbstractMaternal vitamin intake during pregnancy is crucial for pregnancy outcomes and the child's subsequent health. However, there are few valid instruments for assessing vitamin intake that address the effects of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP). This study aimed to investigate the validity of a FFQ concerning vitamin intake during early and late pregnancy with and without NVP. The participants comprised 200 Japanese pregnant women who completed the FFQ and from whom blood samples were taken in early and late pregnancy. Energy-adjusted dietary vitamin intakes (vitamin C, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin D) from FFQ were compared with their blood concentrations. A subgroup of women with NVP was investigated. In early pregnancy, significant correlations between FFQ and biomarkers were observed for vitamin C (r0·27), folate (r0·18) and vitamin D (r0·26) in women with NVP and for vitamin A (r0·18), vitamin B12(r0·24) and vitamin D (r0·23) in women without NVP. No significant correlations were observed in either group for vitamins B6or E. In late pregnancy, similar significant associations were observed for vitamin C (r0·27), folate (r0·22), vitamin B6(r0·18), vitamin B12(r0·27) and vitamin A (r0·15); coefficients were higher among women without NVP. Our study demonstrates that the FFQ is a useful tool for assessing intake of several important vitamins in early and late pregnancy regardless of NVP status.

A total of 69 gram-positive, catalase-negative strains isolated from Inner Mongolia traditional meat sausages were characterized in respect to their technological properties, including acid production, salt and nitrite tolerance, gas, slime and H2S production, hydrolysis of arginine and biogenic amine production. All of the isolated strains decrease the pH below 5.0 after 24h of cultivation. All isolates are able to grow with 6.5% NaCl or with 150mg L-1NaNO2and 51 isolates are able to grow with 10% NaCl. All isolates don’t produce gas and slime. 54 isolates don’t produce H2S. 23 isolated strains don’t produce NH3 from arginine, and 40 isolates don’t produce biogenic amine. Consolidation of these results, 8 strains show the best technological properties to be used as starter culture for sausage production. The bacterial selected are then subjected to biochemical tests using the API 50 CH and they are identified as 6 Lactobacillus planarum and 2 Lactobacillus curvatus.

Inulinase (β-2,1-D- fructan fructanohydrolase), EC 3.2.1.7, targets the β-2,1 linkage of inulin, a polyfructan consisting of linear β-2,1 linked fructose, and hydrolyzes it into fructose. This use provides an alternative to produce fructose syrup through the hydrolysis of inulin. The objective of this work was to study the production, characterization and applications of inulinases from the fungal endophyte CCMB 328 isolated from the Brazilian semi-arid region. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was employed to evaluate the effect of variables (concentration of glucose and yeast extract), on secreted inulinase activities detected in the culture medium and also in the inulin hydrolysis. The results showed that the best conditions for inulinase production by CCMB 328 are 9.89 g / L for glucose and 1.09 g / L for yeast extract. The concentration of 0.20 mol/L of NaCl and KCl increased the activity of inulinase from CCMB 328 by approximately 63% and 37%, respectively. The results also showed that the inulinase has potential for inulin hydrolysis, whose conversion yields roughly 72.48 % for an initial concentration of inulin at 1% (w/v).
