The species composition and abundance of viable seed in organic forest floor and surface mineral soil from two high-latitude jack pine dominated and two white spruce dominated stands were determined by enumerating germinants from samples placed on moist peat-moss beds. Estimated seed density ranged from 500 to 2600 seeds/m2, representing 13 species of trees, shrubs, and forbs. About half of the species in the seed bank were present as mature plants in each stand. The high seed densities recorded are inconsistent with the previously proposed poleward decline in the abundance of buried seed. The role of buried viable seed differed among species in relation to inherent seed dispersal capabilities and seed longevity. Several species were recorded that are considered to have a very short period of viability in the soil. It is suggested that even a short residence in the seed bank may be adaptive in areas where spring burning accounts for a large proportion of the total area burned annually.

The seed bank of a Pinus ponderosa – Symphoricarpos albus stand in east-central Washington was examined with respect to species composition, depth distribution, and germination responses to heat and shade treatments. Seeds of 57 species were present in the seed bank to a depth of 10 cm. Twenty-one of these species were not found in the aboveground vegetation of the study area. Estimated viable seed densities in spring and autumn collections were 13 052 ± 1481 and 14 463 ± 1356 seeds m−2, respectively. Stellaria media and Poa pratensis, both alien species, accounted for 50% of the buried viable seed. Seed density was highest in litter samples. Total seed density decreased with soil depth, although seeds of some pioneer species were more abundant in the mineral soil than in the litter. Species dominating the seed bank were generally unimportant in the aboveground vegetation. Woody species, which dominated the aboveground vegetation, accounted for only 1% of the seed bank. Annual forbs dominated the seed bank (45% of total buried viable seed) but were not dominant in the vegetation. Seeds of several species survived prestratification heat treatments. Poststratification heat treatments inhibited germination or destroyed seed of nearly all species. As shading increased, germination of most species decreased. However, shade did not inhibit germination of species characteristic of mature successional stages.

Bitter cherry (Prunus emarginata (Dougl.) Walp.) is a largely unstudied early successional tree native to the Pacific Northwest. We used multiple regression and regression tree analyses to identify the most significant variables describing the distribution of bitter cherry populations in the western Cascade Range of Oregon. To determine if bitter cherry relies on a soil seed bank for regeneration after disturbance, we compared successional patterns to direct measures of buried seed. Measurements from 78 sites ranging in age from 1 to 50 years since disturbance and 29 years of permanent plot data showed density, constancy, and cover were low in the first decade after disturbance and did not peak until the third decade. Based on these patterns, we inferred that bitter cherry is not an obligate seed bank species. We did find viable seeds stored in the soil (25.0 ± 6.4 seeds/m2 (mean ± SE) on sites with >600 live stems/ha) but concluded that historical disturbance intervals greater than the length of time seeds can remain viable in the soil have limited bitter cherry regeneration from a seed bank and, as a result, its distribution and abundance. Bitter cherry may play an increasingly important role in Pacific Northwest forests given the large areas of early successional habitat created by frequent timber harvests.Key words: H.J. Excimer laser coronary atherectomy (ELCA) is a long-established adjunctive therapy that can be applied during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Technical aspects have evolved and there is an established safety and efficacy record across a number of clinical indications in contemporary interventional practice where complex lesions are routinely encountered. The role of ELCA during PCI for thrombus, non-crossable or non-expandable lesions, chronic occlusions and stent under-expansion are discussed in this review. The key advantage of ELCA over alternative atherectomy interventions is delivery on a standard 0.014-inch guidewire. Additionally, the technique can be mastered by any operator after a short period of training. The major limitation is presence of heavy calcification although when rotational atherectomy (RA) is required but cannot be applied due to inability to deliver the dedicated RotaWire™ (Boston Scientific), ELCA can create an upstream channel to permit RotaWire passage and complete the case with RA – the RASER technique.

Two computer data bases were formed: reference base «Prodromus» including the nomenclature forest syntaxa and experienced geobotanic releves «Forests of European Russia». Ecological, coenotic and floristic analysis of broadleaved-coniferous forests mostly corresponding to association Rhodobryo rosei – Piceetum abietis Korotkov 1986 was conducted with these bases. Releves (305) from South taiga and broadleaved-coniferous subzone were used. The analysis revealed complex syntaxonomy, boreal-nemoral character and wide distribution ass. Rhodobryo-Piceetum from central European Russia. Ecological comparison of this association with some nomenclature types of broadleaved-coniferous communities in East Europe was carried out. Preliminary prodromus for European Russian mixed forests is suggested. Role of ecological, succession and regional factors was shown for differentiation of syntaxa.

Campo de Dalías, located in southeastern Spain, is the greatest European exponent of greenhouse agriculture. The development of this type of agriculture has led to an exponential economic development of one of the poorest areas of Spain, in a short period of time. Simultaneously, it has brought about a serious alteration of natural resources. This article will study the temporal evolution of changes in land use, and the exploitation of groundwater. Likewise, this study will delve into the technological development in greenhouses (irrigation techniques, new water resources, greenhouse structures or improvement in cultivation techniques) seeking a sustainable intensification of agriculture under plastic. This sustainable intensification also implies the conservation of existing natural areas.

Background. Vitamin C, E, D, A, zinc are considered to be essential in preventing and treating of acute respiratory infections (ARI) including COVID-19. Methods. We reviewed published studies evaluating the potential roles of these vitamin and zinc for ARIs and COVID-19 using Medline database, medRxiv, and bibliographic references. Results. Vitamins C, D, and E did not reduce incidence of common cold in general, but vitamin C reduced by half in population with physical and environment stresses. Vitamins C and E shortened duration and reduced severity of common cold. A large-dose vitamin A had no effect on recovery from pneumonia. Zinc improved clinical deterioration and pneumonia duration in under five. The effect on preventing COVID-19 morbidity and related-death was lacking. Conclusions. Although the effects of vitamins and zinc on ARIs including COVID-19 were inconclusive, taking these for a short period during pandemic may be beneficial when there is risks of deficiency.

The analysis of the total buried seed population along an altitudinal gradient in the Mont Jacques-Cartier area, southern Quebec, reveals a close relationship between buried seed flora and aboveground vegetation. Eighty-one percent of the species present in the total buried seed population were present in the aboveground vegetation of the study sites. The total number of seeds in the buried seed population, the number of species in the total buried seed population, and the number of seeds and species in the seed bank did not show any significant linear correlation with altitude. A shift from a boreal to an arctic–alpine buried seed population with increasing altitude was observed, instead of a decrease in seed bank size.

The paper analyzes the course of events and the international context of Сarpatho- Ukrainian state’s rise and defeat in terms of role and impact of the leading European actors at the end of the 1930’s. Based on an in-depth study of the wide range of literature, documents and relevant archives, the author highlights the role of Carpatho-Ukraine, which for a short period happened to be at the epicenter of the geopolitical interests of the states whose actions or inaction fueled the warmongers. The revival and strengthening of a number of European countries at that historical period deteriorized international relations. The erosion of the Versailles-Washington bases intensified the contradictions in the foreign policy between the victorious and vanquished states. The defeated countries reinforced their positions, since the victors, who were expanding their military might at the expense of Czechoslovak Republic, including Transcarpathia, were becoming more submissive in accommodating territorial claims. This situation largely updated the approaches to the Ukrainian question. The variability of the ways to solve it largely depended on the situational decisions of the Third Reich political leadership.

This article describes Victory Day commemorations (9 May) in the territories of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic, based on observation, interviews, and material from the periodical press. In the course of the study, it was found out that in the republics celebration of this date went beyond the memory of the events and participants of the Great Patriotic War. The holiday assumed new meanings, acquiring its own characteristics and markers. Commemorative practices were not limited to participants of the Great Patriotic War, but were also devoted to the military and civilian dead in the current armed conflict in the Donbas. Particular attention is paid to the role of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (ROC MP) in events held on this day. The holiday’s celebration includes a number of unique symbols and signs that are only characteristic of the 9th of May. While the celebration of 9 th of May takes but a short period of time, its emotional component and capacity for expression are more comparable to the festival tradition than to that of commemoration. At the same time, on the temporal segment, 9th of May takes a short one-hour period of time, and the potential of the emotional component and the fullness of the day is more comparable to the festive cultural tradition than to the commemorative one.
