The coordination properties of alizarin green series dyes with uranyl ions were studied in the presence of cationoid surfactants (cetylpyridinium bromide, carbethoxypentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide). Ternary complexes of the composition UO2L2S2, UO2L2S4, UO2L2S6, and UO2L3S9, where L is dye and S is surfactant, are formed in weakly acid solutions. The formation constants of the complexes were established and a procedure was worked out for the direct photometric determination of uranium.

The absorption spectra of the binary complexes of lanthanoids with bromopyrogallol red were measured and the formation of ternary complexes with cation active tenside, Septonex, was studied. Optimal conditions were found for the formation of these complexes and the possibility of their use in the photometric determination of lanthanoids was demonstrated on several examples.

In weakly acidic medium, pH 3.5-6.5, the title dye forms with aluminium ions a complex with the Al : L ratio 1 : 1. In the presence of cetylpyridinium or carbethoxypentadecyltrimethylammonium, ternary complexes AlL3Sr (r = 6 or 9, respectively) are formed. The equilibrium constants of the complexing equilibria in the binary and ternary systems concerned were calculated, and a method of photometric determination of aluminium has been suggested.

The reactions of four dyes of the alizarin green series with indium(III) ions were studied. In weakly acid media of pH 4-6.5, binary InL and InL2 complexes are formed in solution. In the presence of cationic tensides containing cetyltrimethylammonium and cetyl pyridinium, defined ternary complexes, InL3S6, are formed in the solution. The conditional stability constants of the binary In-L complexes and the equilibrium constants of the studied complexing ternary systems were calculated and a procedure for the photometric and chelometric determination of indium was proposed.

2-Oxoglutaric acid reacts with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazoline hydrazone in acid solutions in the presence of FeCl3 to give a stady yellow colour. The method enables the substance to be determined in concentrations as low as 15 μmol l-1 with an accuracy of about 10%. The analysis can be performed in the presence of some additional natural or synthetic 2-oxo acids. The applicability of the method was tested in the determination of the activity of some enzymes involved in the metabolism of 2-oxoglutaric acid. Glutamic acid can be determined after its prior nonenzymatic transamination. A number of 2-oxo acids including 2-oxoglutaric acid can be determined photometrically with a high sensitivity by reaction with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone in conditions favouring the formation of blue tetra-aza-pentamethinecyanine dyes. The molar absorptivities largely lay within the region of (2-4.5) . 104 l mol-1cm-1.

Study of coordination compounds of lanthanide elements has received a great attention due to growing applications in science and technology. Number of chromogenic reagents form water soluble colored complexes with lanthanides. Eriochrome cyanine R (ECR) a member of triphenylmethane type of dye has been reported to form green colored complexes with lanthanides and has been used for microdetermination of these metal ions. Addition of cationic surfactant, Cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), a cationic surfactant sensitizes the color reactions of Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III) and Lu(III) with ECR. Formation of water soluble, highly colored ternary complexes with a considerable bathochromic shift of about 50 nm in presence of surfactant has been observed. Optimum reaction conditions and other analytical parameters were also evaluated. Stoichiometric ratio 1:3:3 of Ln: ECR: CPB are responsible for the observed rise in molar absorptivity and sensitivity. Beer’s law was obeyed between 0.50 to 13.00 ppm. Effective photometric range and molar absorptivity of these ternary complexes have been calculated. Effect of some common interfering ions on determination of these lanthanide metal ions was studied. A simple, rapid and highly sensitive spectrophotometeric method has been proposed for the determination of metal ions understudy.

The reactions of gallocyanine methyl ester with germanium(IV) and tin(IV) in 7.7% (m/m) ethanol and with lead(II) in 15.5% ethanol are studied spectrophotometrically. In slightly acid solutions, complexes of GeL3 (pH 2.5-6.5), SnL2 and SnL3 (pH 1.7-6 in the presence oftartaric acid), and PbL and PbL2 (pH 4-7) are formed. The conditional stability constants of the complexes and the equilibrium constants of the complexation reactions are calculated and procedures are suggested for the photometric determination of tin and for the chelometric determination of lead using visual or photometric indication with gallocyanine methyl ester as metallochromic indicator (colour change from red-violet to blue). A gallocyanine methyl ester-methyl orange screened indicator proved useful for the visual determination of lead, showing an expressive colour change from brown to green.

Numerical analysis of absorbance data for the analytically significant UO22+ - Chromazurol B, UO22+ - Chromazurol S, and UO22+ - Eriochromcyanine R systems in the presence of the cationic surfactant SeptonexR revealed that also in micellar medium, complex equilibria establish and several complexes are formed in dependence on pH and concentration of uranyl ions, reagent, and surfactant. Based on the results, optimum conditions are found for the spectrophotometric determination of low concentration of uranium.

Based on benzoylacetone synthesized 1-phenyl-2- [2-hydroxy-3-sulfo-5-nitrophenylazo] 1,3-butadione (PHSNPAB). Studied complex formation of copper (II) with 1-phenyl-2- [2-hydroxy-3-sulfo-5-nitrophenylazo] 1,3-butadione (PHSNPAB) in the presence and absence of the third component such as cetylpyridinium chloride (CPCl), cetylpyridinium bromide (CPBr) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr). Single ligand complexes are formed at pH = 3, λ = 444nm, and mixed ligand complexes at pH = 2 λ = 456, 454, and 461 nm, respectively (CPCl, and CPBr, CTMABr). İdentified the relations of the reacting components in homogeneous composition of Cu-R (1: 2) and mixed ligand Cu-R-CPCl (1: 2: 2), Cu-R-CPBr (1: 2: 2) and Cu-R-CTMABr (1 2: 1) complexes, which concentration interval subordinated to Beer's law. The influence of external ions and masking substances on complex formation was studied. Method for the photometric determination of copper in the rocks was established.
