The reactions of four dyes of the alizarin green series with indium(III) ions were studied. In weakly acid media of pH 4-6.5, binary InL and InL2 complexes are formed in solution. In the presence of cationic tensides containing cetyltrimethylammonium and cetyl pyridinium, defined ternary complexes, InL3S6, are formed in the solution. The conditional stability constants of the binary In-L complexes and the equilibrium constants of the studied complexing ternary systems were calculated and a procedure for the photometric and chelometric determination of indium was proposed.

In weakly acidic medium, pH 3.5-6.5, the title dye forms with aluminium ions a complex with the Al : L ratio 1 : 1. In the presence of cetylpyridinium or carbethoxypentadecyltrimethylammonium, ternary complexes AlL3Sr (r = 6 or 9, respectively) are formed. The equilibrium constants of the complexing equilibria in the binary and ternary systems concerned were calculated, and a method of photometric determination of aluminium has been suggested.

Reactions of gallocyanine methyl ester with gallium(III) and indium(III) ions in solutions in 15% (m/m) ethanol were studied spectrophotometrically. At pH 1.7-6.5, the GaL, GaL2, and Ga(OH)L3 complexes are formed; in the case of indium, the In(OH)2L2 and In(OH)L3 complexes appear at pH 4-6.5, and InL3B2 in tartrate solutions. The conditional stability constants and the equilibrium constants of the coordination equilibria were calculated, and procedures were worked out for a photometric determination of gallium and for a chelatometric determination of gallium and indium using gallocyanine methyl ester as metallochromic indicator.

A comprehensive spectrophotometric study is undertaken for ternary complexes of higher rare earth element Erbium with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid ( EDTA), hydroxyl ethylene diamine triacetic acid (HEDTA), trans 1, 2, cyclohexane diamine tetra acetic acid (CYDTA) and ethylene glycol bis (2-amino ethylene) N,N1,N11,N1 1 1 tetra acetic acid (EGTA) as primary ligand and the binary ligands used are Maltol, Tiron, Kojic acid and α-Picolinic acid. The ternary complexes shows hyperchromic effect as compare to primary complexes which is exploited to determine the stoichiometry of ternary complexes and it is found to be 1:1:1. The conditional stability constants (Ks1) are corrected using k H values of ligands. The order of stability with the series of ligands in different systems is deduced as EDTA and HEDTA: α Picolinic acid >Tiron> Kojic acid > Maltol and CYDTA and EGTA: α Picolinic acid > Kojic acid > Tiron > Maltol. The % increase in molar coefficients of mixed ligand complexes of Erbium is significant which can facilitates the analytical measurements for its micro determination.

The reactions of gallocyanine methyl ester with germanium(IV) and tin(IV) in 7.7% (m/m) ethanol and with lead(II) in 15.5% ethanol are studied spectrophotometrically. In slightly acid solutions, complexes of GeL3 (pH 2.5-6.5), SnL2 and SnL3 (pH 1.7-6 in the presence oftartaric acid), and PbL and PbL2 (pH 4-7) are formed. The conditional stability constants of the complexes and the equilibrium constants of the complexation reactions are calculated and procedures are suggested for the photometric determination of tin and for the chelometric determination of lead using visual or photometric indication with gallocyanine methyl ester as metallochromic indicator (colour change from red-violet to blue). A gallocyanine methyl ester-methyl orange screened indicator proved useful for the visual determination of lead, showing an expressive colour change from brown to green.

The coordination properties of alizarin green series dyes with uranyl ions were studied in the presence of cationoid surfactants (cetylpyridinium bromide, carbethoxypentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide). Ternary complexes of the composition UO2L2S2, UO2L2S4, UO2L2S6, and UO2L3S9, where L is dye and S is surfactant, are formed in weakly acid solutions. The formation constants of the complexes were established and a procedure was worked out for the direct photometric determination of uranium.

The reaction of gallocyanine methyl ester with uranyl ions was studied spectrophotometrically in slightly acid or neutral solutions in 40% (m/m) ethanol. A violet complex of UO2L2 is formed at pH > 5. The conditional stability constants of the complex in the pH 6 - 7.4 range and the equilibrium constants of the coordination reaction were derived from the concentration curves and continuous variations curves. The optimum conditions were sought for the spectrophotometric determination of uranium based on the occurrence of the UO2L2 complex. The relative standard deviation obtained for a uranium concentration of 106 μg l-1 was sr = 2.13%.

The composition, optical characteristics, molar absorption coefficients and equilibrium constants of the reactions of formation of the ML and ML2 complexes of both reagents with cadmium(II) ions were determined by graphical analysis and numerical interpretation of the absorbance-pH curves by the modified SQUAD-G program. Optimal conditions were proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of Cd in 10% v/v ethanol medium in the presence of 0.1% w/v Triton X-100 or 1% w/v Brij 35. BrPADAP and ClPADAP are the most sensitive spectrophotometric reagents for the determination of cadmium(II) ions (ε = 1.28-1.44 . 105 mmol-1 cm2 at 560 nm and pH 8.0-9.5) with a high colour contrast in the reaction (Δλmax ~117 nm) and a selectivity similar to that of other N-heterocyclic azodyes (PAR, PAN, etc.).

The optical and acid-base characteristics of BrPADAP and ClPADAP were studied in mixed water-ethanol and water-DMF media and in 10% ethanol medium in the presence of cationic, anionic and nonionic tensides. The composition, optical characteristics, molar absorption coefficients and equilibrium constants of the ML and ML2 complexes with zinc(II) ions were found by graphical analysis and numerical interpretation of the absorbance curves by the modified SQUAD-G program. Optimal conditions were found for the spectrophotometric determination of Zn(II) in the presence of 0.1% Triton X-100 or 1% Brij 35 in alkaline media with pH = 6.5-10. BrPADAP and ClPADAP are the most sensitive reagents (ε = 1.3-1.6 . 105 mmol-1 cm2 at 557 and 560 nm, respectively) for the determination of zinc with high colour contrast of the reaction (Δλ = 104 nm) and selectivity similar to that for the other N-heterocyclic azodyes (PAN, PAR, etc.).

The acid-base and optical properties of Chromazurol S and Eriochromazurol B in the presence of 1 . 10-6 - 2 . 10-2M solutions of cetylpyridinium bromide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and 1-ethoxycarbonylpentadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (Septonex) and 0.001-1.0% w/v solutions of octylphenolpolyethylene glycol ether (Triton X-100), polyoxyethylenemonolauryl ether (Brij 35) and lauryl sulphate sodium salt were determined by graphical and numerical interpretation of absorbance curves. The poorly soluble ion associates, which can be extracted into chloroform and which have the defined composition [LH4-nn-.n T+] or [LH3-nn-.n T+] are formed at submicellar concentration of the tenside. In regions close to the critical micellar concentration of the tenside, soluble binary complexes of the acid-base forms of the reagent are formed with tenside micelles. The conditional stability constants of the reagent acid-base equilibrium depend on the type and concentration of the tenside, on the reagent concentration, on the concentration and type of inorganic acid anions and on the ionic strength of the solution. The mechanism of interaction of the reagent with the tenside and the probable structure of the binary species are discussed.
