The classical two-channel push-pull chirp transform spectrometer (CTS) has been widely applied in satellite-borne remote sensing systems for earth observation and deep space exploration. In this paper, we present two simplified structures with single M(l)-C(s) CTS arrangements for the spectral analysis of stationary signals. A simplified CTS system with a single M(l)-C(s) arrangement and a time delay line was firstly developed. Another simplified structure of CTS with a M(l)-C(s) arrangement and a frequency conversion channel was also developed for spectral analysis of stationary signals. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the two simplified arrangements can both realize spectrum measurement for the stationary signals and obtain the same frequency resolution, amplitude accuracy and system sensitivity as that of the classical two-channel push–pull CTS system. Compared to the classical CTS structure, the two simplified arrangements require fewer devices, save power consumption and have reduced mass. The matching problem between the two channels can be avoided in the two simplified arrangements. The simplified CTS arrangements may have potential application in the spectrum measurement of stationary signals in the field of aviation and spaceflight.

Abstract Background Speech perception in cochlear implants (CI) is affected by frequency resolution, exposure time, and working memory. Frequency discrimination is especially difficult in CI. Working memory is important for speech and language development and is expected to contribute to the vast variability in CI speech reception and expression outcome. The aim of this study is to evaluate CI patients’ consonants discrimination that varies in voicing, manner, and place of articulation imparting differences in pitch, time, and intensity, and also to evaluate working memory status and its possible effect on consonant discrimination. Results Fifty-five CI patients were included in this study. Their aided thresholds were less than 40 dBHL. Consonant speech discrimination was assessed using Arabic consonant discrimination words. Working memory was assessed using Test of Memory and Learning-2 (TOMAL-2). Subjects were divided according to the onset of hearing loss into prelingual children and postlingual adults and teenagers. Consonant classes studied were fricatives, stops, nasals, and laterals. Performance on the high frequency CVC words was 64.23% ± 17.41 for prelinguals and 61.70% ± 14.47 for postlinguals. These scores were significantly lower than scores on phonetically balanced word list (PBWL) of 79.94% ± 12.69 for prelinguals and 80.80% ± 11.36 for postlinguals. The lowest scores were for the fricatives. Working memory scores were strongly and positively correlated with speech discrimination scores. Conclusions Consonant discrimination using high frequency weighted words can provide a realistic tool for assessment of CI speech perception. Working memory skills showed a strong positive relationship with speech discrimination abilities in CI.

The dominant underwater noise source of a ship is known to be propeller cavitation. Recently, attempts have been made to quantify the source strength using on-board pressure sensors near the propeller, as this has advantages over conventional noise measurement. In this study, a beamforming method was used to estimate the source strength of a cavitating propeller. The method was validated against a model-scale measurement in a cavitation tunnel, which showed good agreement between the measured and estimated source levels. The method was also applied to a full-scale measurement, in which the source level was measured using an external hydrophone array. The estimated source level using the hull pressure sensors showed good agreement with the measured one above 400 Hz, which shows potential for noise monitoring using on-board sensors. A parametric study was carried out to check the practicality of the method. From the results, it was shown that a sufficient recording time is required to obtain a consistent level at high frequencies. Changing the frequency resolution had little effect on the result, as long as enough data were provided for the one-third octave band conversion. The number of sensors affected the mid- to low-frequency data.

In this paper, we proposed a new symbol rate estimation algorithm for phase shift keying (PSK) and qua drawtube amplitude modulation (QAM) signals in AWGN channel First we constructe a delay-multiplied signal, from which we obtaine the modulated information. Then we calculated the instantaneous autocorrelation of the delay-multiplied signal to pick out the phase jump. To eliminate the restriction of frequency resolution in fast Fourier transform, we performed a Chirp-Z transform to find out the exact spectral line which represente the symbol rate of the signal to be analyzed. Compared with the existing algorithms, it is a simple solution that has a better performance and accuracy in low signal-to-noise-ratio channel conditions. Simulation results show that the probability of relative estimating deviation below 0.1% reaches 100% and the average and standard variance of absolute estimation deviation are at the magnitude of 10-2 when SNR is over 2dB.

Estimation of vehicle speed by analysis of drive-by noise is a known technique. The methods used in this kind of practice generally estimate the velocity of the vehicle with respect to the microphone(s), so they rely on the relative motion of the vehicle to the microphone(s). There are also other methods that do not rely on this technique. For example, recent research has shown that there is a statistical correlation between vehicle speed and drive-by noise emissions spectra. This does not rely on the relative motion of the vehicle with respect to the microphone(s) so it inspires us to consider the possibility of predicting velocity of the vehicle using an on-board microphone. This has the potential for the development of a new kind of speed sensor. For this purpose we record sound signal from a vehicle under speed variation using an on-board microphone. Sound emissions from a vehicle are very complex, which is from the engine, the exhaust, the air conditioner, other mechanical parts, tires, and air resistance. These emissions carry both stationary and non-stationary information. We propose to make the analysis by wavelet packet analysis, rather than traditional time or frequency domain methods. Wavelet packet analysis, by providing arbitrary time-frequency resolution, enables analyzing signals of stationary and non-stationary nature. It has better time representation than Fourier analysis and better high-frequency resolution than Wavelet analysis. Subsignals from the wavelet packet analysis are analyzed further by Norm Entropy, Log Energy Entropy, and Energy. These features are evaluated by feeding them into a multilayer perceptron. Norm entropy achieves the best prediction with 97.89% average accuracy with 1.11 km/h mean absolute error which corresponds to 2.11% relative error. Time sensitivity is ±0.453 s and is open to improvement by varying the window width. The results indicate that, with further tests at other speed ranges, with other vehicles and under dynamic conditions, this method can be extended to the design of a new kind of vehicle speed sensor.

The maximum entropy spectrum (MES), a sampled data power spectrum estimator, is applied to the enhancement of imagery obtained by synthetic array radar (SAR) imaging systems. MES offers better frequency resolution than conventional Fourier transform methods for certain signal classes. Since azimuth ground resolution in SAR systems is obtained by doppler frequency measurement of the radar return, the method is capable of enhancing the resolution of SAR maps. The principal signal requirement is adequate signal-to-noise ratio. The maximum entropy method has been tested using data obtained by the Hughes FLAMR radar system. The super-resolution capabilities of the method are demonstrated using FLAMR images of corner reflector arrays.
