Optical technologies for measuring electrical quantities attract great attention due to their unique properties and significant advantages over other technologies used in high-voltage electric power industry: the use of optical fibers ensures high stability of measuring equipment to electromagnetic interference and galvanic isolation of high-voltage sensors; external electromagnetic fields do not influence the data transmitted from optical sensors via fiber-optic communication lines; problems associated with ground loops are eliminated, there are no side electromagnetic radiation and crosstalk between the channels. The structure and operation principle of a quasi-distributed fiber-optic high-voltage monitoring system is presented. The sensitive element is a combination of a piezo-ceramic tube with an optical fiber wound around it. The device uses reverse transverse piezoelectric effect. The measurement principle is based on recording the change in the recirculation frequency under the applied voltage influence. When the measuring sections are arranged in ascending order of the measured effective voltages relative to the receiving-transmitting unit, a relative resolution of 0,3–0,45 % is achieved for the PZT-5H and 0,8–1,2 % for the PZT-4 in the voltage range 20–150 kV.

The isotypic title one-dimensional coordination polymers, [CdCl2(C18H14N4O4)]n, (I), and [HgCl2(C18H14N4O4)]n, (II), are, respectively, the cadmium(II) and mercury(II) complexes of the dimethyl ester of 5,6-bis(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid. In both compounds, the metal ions are located on a twofold rotation axis and a second such axis bisects the Car—Carbonds of the pyrazine ring. The metal ions are bridged by binding to the N atoms of the two pyridine rings and have anMN2Cl2bisphenoidal coordination geometry. The metal–Npyrazinedistances are much longer than the metal–Npyridinedistances; the difference is 0.389 (2) Å for the Cd—N bonds but only 0.286 (5) Å for the Hg—N bond lengths. In the crystals of both compounds, the polymer chains are linkedviapairs of C—H...Cl hydrogen bonds, forming corrugated slabs parallel to theacplane.

Optical backscatter reflectometry (OBR) is a method for the interrogation of Rayleigh scattering occurring in each section of an optical fiber, resulting in a single-fiber-distributed sensor with sub-millimeter spatial resolution. The use of high-scattering fibers, doped with MgO-based nanoparticles in the core section, provides a scattering increase which can overcome 40 dB. Using a configuration-labeled Scattering-Level Multiplexing (SLMux), we can arrange a network of high-scattering fibers to perform a simultaneous scan of multiple fiber sections, therefore extending the OBR method from a single fiber to multiple fibers. In this work, we analyze the performance and boundary limits of SLMux, drawing the limits of detection of N-channel SLMux, and evaluating the performance of scattering-enhancement methods in optical fibers.

In the title one-dimensional coordination polymer, {[ZnCl2(C18H14N4)]·0.25H2O}n, the ZnIIatom is coordinated by two chloride ions and two 4,4′-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)biphenyl ligands, generating a distorted tetrahedral ZnCl2N2geometry. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings of the ligand is 51.0 (1)° and the dihedral angles between the benzene rings and their attached imidazole rings are 18.7 (2) and 45.9 (1)°. The bridging ligand leads to [10-1] polymeric chains in the crystal and the disordered water molecule (occupancy 0.25) forms O—H...Cl hydrogen bonds.
