AbstractA photo-alignment method for micro capillaries based on the SD-1 azo-dye is demonstrated. In this work a liquid-crystal molecules aligning layer is created by point-by-point irradiation of the azo-dye film by using an UV laser light. The method opens up new possibilities for an improved molecules’ orientation control in both glass- and polymer-based photonic liquid crystal fibres.

The state of the wheel surface after dressing is important for processing of a surface to the nano-order level. A laser dresser was developed using ultraviolet (UV) laser light, which imparts no mechanical damage to the resin bond. One feature of this system is that UV laser energy is transmitted by a special optical fiber for UV light, and is transmitted only to the resin bond. Using this newly developed laser dresser, it was possible to ablate the resin bond to a depth of over 2 microns using a fiber with a core diameter of 200 microns.

ABSTRACTThe mechanism of metal film deposition from carbonyls as precursors is discussed in detail. It is shown that different species produced by UV laser irradiation in the gas phase contribute to film growth. Highly reactive species such as metal atoms may be important during the nucleation phase, whereas more stable carbonyls are responsible for the main growth process. This indicates that the main decarbonylation effect occurs at the surface. The higher level of impurity incorporation in chromium films in comparison with nickel films is explained by the relative position of the Fermi level in the d-band of Ni and Cr with respect to the 2π* level of CO, which favors CO bond dissociation in the case of chromium.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) material has excellent characteristics, such as being light weight, low cost, ease of machining, and optical quality, which are useful in numerous applications such as backlit LCD display panels, lens optics, and other photoelectric fields. Laser machining of polymerization material results in a superior machining quality, high accuracy, high speed, and high reproducibility, produces a small variety of products, reduces mold costs, and enables the rapid manufacture of products based on complex graphics by processing different depths and widths of the 3D structure. This paper presents the fabrication of symmetrical array microstructures on PMMA material by using a UV laser system. The PMMA material dimensions and thickness were 20 x 20 mm and 1 mm, respectively. Regarding the machining quality, the laser pulse energy, pulse repetition frequency, and fill spacing were adjusted. For the experiments, a semiconductor laser source (635 nm/5 mW/TEM00) and a beam profiler were used to measure the characteristics of a laser beam passing through the microstructures. The microstructure pitches and morphologies also affected the light uniformity. After laser machining, the surface morphology and the light transmittance were measured using a spectrophotometer.
