We successfully synthesized ZnGa2O4 microflowers self-assembled by hexagonal single-crystalline nanopetals. The ZnGa2O4 crystal exhibits improved solar-blind detection performance such as short response time, large light to dark current ratio and high photocurrent stability under zero bias voltage.

The Rankine Compression Gas turbine (RCG) is a new type of combined cycle that delivers all power on one free power turbine. With its free power turbine the intended fields of application of the RCG are mechanical drives and ship propulsion. For the RCG to become successful in these fields of application a short response time from part-load to full-load is vital. Experiments with an experimental set-up at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven showed that the response time would benefit from after-spray and supplementary firing. Therefore, these items were implemented in an overdrive controller that was designed to accelerate the RCG cycle more quickly. Simulations showed that the overdrive controller dramatically reduces the response time of the modeled RCG-cycle in a transient from 50% part-load to full-load from 20 minutes down to about 2 minutes. This is an impressive improvement of the response time and is believed to make the RCG suitable for mechanical drives and ship propulsion.

Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a new biosensor system based on nanoparticle to determine penicillin in pharmaceuticals. Methods: The characterization and optimization of the potentiometric penicillin biosensor (PB) were prepared by using synthesized surface-dependent and surface-independent ZnO nanoparticles named ZnO nanorods and chitosan were carried out. It was preferred ZnO nanorod because of its electrical, optical, physical and photocatalyst properties, biocompatibility and non-toxicity in the construction of the penicillin biosensor. Results: The operating range was obtained as 10-1-10-3M, the optimum buffer concentration was 10 mmol, optimum pH was 7.4 and the optimum temperature was 25 °C for the PB. The PB has advantages in terms of short response time, long enough shelf life, cheap, and easy elaborate. Conclusion: Whether the biosensor can be used to determine penicillin and accurately measure penicillin, the amount of penicillin in a commercial pharmaceutical preparation named Alfoxil was successfully made by using our prepared penicillin biosensor.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the possibilities of mechanical switch replacement by capacitive film touch sensor in applications requiring high reliability and short response time. Advantage of replacing mechanical switch by capacitive touch sensor is no mechanical wear and possible implementation of sensor in application where the switch could not be used or where the flexibility of the sensor substrate is required. The aim of this work is to develop a capacitive touch sensor with the advantage of maximum mechanical resistance, short response time and high sensitivity. Design/methodology/approach Based on various possible sensors layouts, the authors realized 18 different (14 self-capacitance and four mutual capacitance) topologies of capacitive sensor for touch applications. Three different technologies – PCB, LTCC and polymer technology – were used to characterize sensor’s behaviour. For precise characterization of different layouts realized on various substrates, the authors used integrated circuit FDC2214 capacitance-to-digital converter. Findings Sensing range of the capacitive touch (proximity) sensor is affected by the per cent of area covered by the sensor, and it does not depend on topology of sensor. The highest sensing range offers PCB technology. Flexible substrates can be used as proper substituent to rigid PCB. Originality/value The novelty of this work lies in finding the touch capacitive sensors that allow shorter switching times compared to standard mechanical switches.

Fe3O4nanoparticles-decorated reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized using solvothermal-pyrolytic method. They have superior gas sensing performance with low detection limit, high sensitivity and short response time.
