Assessment of Impact Damage Caused by Dropped Objects on Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Covers

Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) subsea protection covers are used to protect offshore pipelines, umbilicals and structures from dropped objects released from offshore oil and gas and fishing activities. The aim of the present study is to perform assessment of impact damage caused by various dropped objects on GRP covers with different geometries. Impact energies carried by different selected offshore dropped objects are calculated by using the impact energy method given by NORSOK N-004 [1]. Computed results show a good agreement with the published dropped object impact energy results reported by DROPS [2]. The present study shows that the impact energies carried by dropped objects in oil and gas activities can range from 28 kJ for a small equipment to 2627 kJ for a typical subsea tree. Generally, the impact energies carried by the dropped objects in fishing activities range from 3 kJ to 14 kJ which is less significant than those in oil and gas activities. The impact absorption capacities of three different GRP cover geometries (i.e. square, triangular and semi-circular shapes) are computed based on finite element analysis (FEA). The results show that the triangular GRP cover geometry has the highest impact absorption capacity among the three investigated GRP cover geometries.

The sensitivity of the electromechanical impedance to structural damage under varying temperature is investigated in this paper. An approach based on maximizing cross-correlation coefficients is used to compensate temperature effects. The experiments are carried out on an air plane conform carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) panel (500mm x 500mm x 5mm) instrumented with 26 piezoelectric transducers of two different sizes. In a first step, the panel is stepwise subjected to temperatures between-50 °C and 100 °C. The influence of varying temperatures on the measured impedances and the capability of the temperature compensation approach are analyzed. Next, the sensitivity to a 200 J impact damage is analyzed and it is set in relation to the influence of a temperature change. It becomes apparent the impact of the transducer size and location on the quality of the damage detection. The results further indicate a significant influence of temperature on the measured spectra. However, applying the temperature compensation algorithm can reduce the temperature effect at the same time increasing the transducer sensitivity within its measuring area. The paper concludes with a discussion about the trade-off between the sensing area, where damage should be detected, and the temperature range, in which damage within this area can reliably be detected.

Accidental loads, for example, due to heavy dropped objects, impact from the trawl gear and anchors of fishing vessels can cause damage to pipelines on the sea bed. The amount of damage will depend on the impact energy. The indentation will be localized at the contact area of the pipe and the impacting object, however, an understanding of the extent of the damage due to an impact is required so that if one should occur in practice an assessment can be made to determine if remedial action needs to be taken to ensure that the pipeline is still serviceable. There are a number of parameters, including the pipe cross section and impact energy, which influence the impact behaviour of a pipe. This paper describes the response, and assesses the damage, of mild steel pipes under high mass low velocity impacts. For this purpose full scale impacts tests were carried out on mild steel pipe having diameter of 457 mm, thickness of 25.4 mm and length of 2000 mm. The pipe was restrained along the base and a 2 tonnes mass with sharp impactor having a vertical downward velocity of 3870 mm/sec was used to impact the pipe transversely with an impact energy of 16 kJ. It was found from the impact tests that a smooth indentation was produced in the pipe. The impact tests were then used for validation of the non-linear dynamic implicit analyses using the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. Deformations at the impact zone, the rebound velocity, etc, recorded in the tests and the results of the finite element analysis were found to be in good agreement. The impact tests and finite element analyses described in this paper will help to improve the understanding of the response of steel pipes under impact loading and can be used as a benchmark for further finite element modelling of impacts on pipes.

Floating production, storage and offloading systems (FPSOs) have been widely used for the development of offshore oil and gas fields because of their attractive features. They are mostly ship- shaped, either converted from existing tankers or purposely built, and the hull structural scantling design for tankers may be applicable to FPSOs. However, FPSOs have their unique characteristics. FPSOs are sited at specific locations with a dynamic loading that is quite different from those arising from unrestricted service conditions. The structures are to be assessed to satisfy the requirements of all in-service and pre-service loading conditions. The fundamental aspects in the structural assessment of FPSOs are the buckling and ultimate strength behaviors of the plate panels, stiffened panels and hull girders. The focus of this paper is to address the buckling and ultimate strength criteria for FPSO structures. Various aspects of the criteria have been widely investigated, and the results of the design formulae proposed in this paper have been compared to a very extensive test database and numerical results from nonlinear finite element analysis and other available methods. The procedures presented in this paper are based on the outcomes of a series of classification society projects in the development of buckling and ultimate strength criteria and referred to the corresponding classification society publications.

This research focuses on the reinforcement of Kevlar in treated kenaf composite, specifically in the study of impact properties as well as the characteristics. The kenaf was treated with 6% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution at a specific period of time before being made into laminates. Impact test was conducted using an instrumented drop tower device at 36J level according to the standard ASTM D7136. Microstructures of the fractured specimens were also analyzed. The results of the study indicated that treated kenaf/Kevlar hybrid composite has better impact absorption energy than pure kenaf composite. Compared to the pure kenaf composite, the hybrid composite absorbs more impact energy and appears to have lower impact damage at the same impact energy level. This is because the Kevlar fibres play an important role to prevent and delay the destruction of composites.

The paper describes the application of a 3D finite element model for prediction of impact induced damage in sandwich composites consisting of laminated skins bonded to a closed cell foam core. The major damage and fracture mechanisms typically developing in transversally loaded sandwich composites were simulated in the model. The model was implemented in the FE package ABAQUS/Explicit and used to predict the impact damage resistance of sandwich panels with different core densities, core thicknesses, and skins layups. Numerical results obtained by FE simulations were compared with experimental data and observations collected through impact tests carried out at various impact energies.

AbstractMechanical damage of seeds due to harvest, handling and other process is an important factor that affects the quality and quaintly of seeds. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of moisture content and the impact energy on the breakage susceptibility of vetch seeds. The experiments were conducted at moisture contents of 7.57 to 25% (wet basis) and at the impact energies of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 J, using an impact damage assessment device. The results showed that impact energy, moisture content, and the interaction effects of these two variables significantly influenced the percentage breakage in vetch seeds (p<0.01). Increasing the impact energy from 0.1 to 0.3 J caused a significant increase in the mean values of seeds breakage from 41.69 to 78.67%. It was found that the relation between vetch seeds moisture content and seeds breakage was non-linear, and the extent of damaged seeds decreased significantlyas a polynomial (from 92.47 to 33.56%) with increasing moisture (from 7.57 to 17.5%) and reached a minimum at moisture level of about 17.5%. Further increase in seed moisture, however, caused an increase in the amount of seeds breakage. Mathematical relationships composed of seed moisture content and impact energy, were developed for accurately description the percentage breakage of vetch seeds under impact loading. It was found that the models have provided satisfactory results over the whole set of values for the dependent variable.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to synthetically investigate the impact damage responses of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and its influence on the compression mechanical responses of CFRP laminates, including damage distribution, residual compressive strength and fracture morphology. Design/methodology/approach A progressive damage simulation model is developed to analyze the complicated damage responses of CFRP laminates that are manufactured by resin transfer method (RTM) technology. Based on the ABAQUS/explicit finite element analysis solver, a VUMAT code is proposed to descript the composite materials’ damage behaviors under both impact and compression load. Adopting this proposed model, the primary mechanical indicators of four groups’ 5284RTM/U3160 CFRP laminates with different stacking sequences are predicted. Moreover, impact and compression after impact tests are conducted to verify the accuracy of simulation results. Findings Both simulation and experimental results show that the impact damage with low visible detectability can significantly reduce composites’ compressive strength. For all four groups’ composite laminates, the residual strength ratio is around 35% or even lower. The kernel impact damage near the plates’ geometric center promotes the degradation process of local materials and finally leads to the early occurrence of mechanical fracture. In addition, the impact damage projection area is not sensitive to the parameters of stacking sequences, while the residual compression strength is proportional to the number of 0-degree layers within whole laminates. Originality/value This study helps to understand the effect of an impact event on CFRP laminates’ compressive bearing capacity and provides a numerical method in simulating the damage responses under both impact and compression load.

The Offshore Oil and Gas Industry has converted a large number of units from trading tankers and carriers into Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs). Several of these have been moored offshore Brazil during the last 15 years. Following the discovery of offshore pre-salt fields some years ago, demand for FPSOs has increased, and the forecasts for productive field lives have grown. The result of these developments is the need to extend the service lives of existing FPSOs. The main aim of this study is to investigate FPSO structural response to environmental conditions and functional loads, considering the actual available tools for numerical simulations and Rule requirements, which currently are basic requirements for design review for Classification. The procedure was developed from one selected FPSO converted from a trading Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) tanker approximately 15 years ago and includes investigation of the impact on hull behavior comparing the motion analyses of the production unit under environmental data and software capabilities available at the period of conversion and actual performance: variances in the environmental (sea scatter diagrams) datasets; updates to Classification requirements for defining offloading conditions, environmental loads, acceptance criteria and remaining fatigue life (RFL); and incorporating the most recent gauged thickness for primary structure. The selected FPSO was evaluated according to prescriptive Rule requirements and also using finite element analysis, taking into account the previous conditions of Classification approval as well as the actual requirements and available data. Structural analysis included one global model and some local refined models to address strength, buckling and fatigue capacity of the typical portions/connections of the hull. The comparisons performed from the results of these analyses are a crucial step toward understanding the structural capacity of the FPSO at the conversion stage, its performance during the last 15 years, and its remaining service life. Differences were tabulated and evaluated so that a more precise level of uncertainty could be achieved for predicting the estimated remaining service life, and consequently, a new and dedicated approach to investigate the existing FPSO fleet is being generated.

During severe hurricanes, such as Katrina, the mooring system of a number of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) in the Gulf of Mexico failed. Drifting MODUs may potentially damage other critical elements of the offshore oil and gas infrastructure by colliding with floating or fixed production systems and transportation hubs, or by rupturing pipelines owing to their dragging anchors over the seabed. To avoid or mitigate the damage caused by a drifted MODU, it is desirable to understand the mechanics of the drift of a MODU under the impact of severe wind, wave and current and have the capability of predicting the trajectory of the drift. To explore the feasibility and accuracy of predicting the trajectory of a drifting MODU based on real-time or hindcast met-ocean conditions and limited knowledge of the condition of the drifting MODU, this study employed a simplified equation describing only the horizontal (surge, sway and yaw) motions of a MODU under the impact of steady wind, current and wave forces. The simplified hydrodynamic model neglects the first- and second-order oscillatory wave forces, unsteady wind forces (owing to wind gustiness), wave drift damping, and the effects of the body oscillation on the steady wind and current forces. It was assumed that the net effects of the oscillatory forces on the steady motion are insignificant. To verify the accuracy and feasibility of our simplified approach, the predicted drifts of two MODUs were compared with the corresponding measured trajectories recorded by the Global Positioning System (GPS).
