Bearing Behavior of H-Shaped Honeycombed Steel Web Composite Columns with Rectangular Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Flanges under Eccentrical Compression Load

In order to investigate the bearing capacity of H-shaped honeycombed steel web composite columns with rectangular concrete-filled steel tube flanges (STHCCs) subjected to eccentrical compression load, 33 full-scale STHCCs were designed with the eccentricity(e), the slenderness ratio (λ), the cubic compressive strength of concrete(fcuk), the thickness of the steel tube flange (t1), the thickness of honeycombed steel web (t2), diameter-depth ratio (d/hw), space-depth (s/hw), and the yield strength of the steel tube (fy) as the main parameters. Considering the nonlinear constitutive model of concrete and simplified constitutive model of steel, the finite element (FE) model of STHCCs was established by ABAQUS software. By comparison with the existing test results, the rationality of the constitutive model of materials and FE modeling was verified. The numerical simulation of 33 full-scale STHCCs was conducted, and the influence of different parameters on the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity was discussed. The results show that the cross-sectional stress distribution basically conforms to the plane-section assumption. With the increase in e, λ, and d/hw, the ultimate eccentrical compression bearing capacity of the full-scale STHCCs decreases, whereas it gradually increases with the increase in fcuk, t1, t2, s/hw, and fy. By introducing bias-stress stability coefficient (φ), the calculation formula of full-scale STHCCs under eccentrical compression is proposed by statistical regression, which can lay a foundation for the popularization and application of these types of composite columns in practical engineering.

Preliminary mechanical evaluation of two novel veterinary angle-stable-threaded interlocking nail systems

ABSTRACT: The interlocking nail represents an excellent option as a surgical approach to treat fractures in long bones in veterinary medicine. However, failures were reported mainly due to a slack present in the interface of the rod with the screws. The present study tested and mechanically compare axial compression loads of two novel models of stable angle interlocking nails with threaded holes. Among the two models, one was uniplanar and the other was multiplanar with orthogonally arranged distal holes. Twenty-one specimens made of polylactic acid were used for the implantation of interlocking nail´s rods, divided into three groups: conventional interlocking nail (G1), novel interlocking nail with a stable angle with holes arranged in a single plane (G2), and novel interlocking nail with a stable angle in two planes, with the penultimate hole at 90 degrees from the others (G3). Biomechanical tests were performed using axial, cyclic, and destructive compression load for comparison between them. All the specimens showed plastic deformation in the screws after destructive tests, in both proximal and distal sides, being highly intense in G1. G2 and G3 of the stable angle rods supported higher loads than G1 in all tests performed (P<0.05). The novel stems did not differ statistically from each other (P>0.05). The initial hypothesis that the novel models would provide increased stability was confirmed; however, no differences were demonstrated between them. The screw locking system on the rods allowed high resistance values in the tests performed, proving to be effective and potentially applicable in real clinical situations.

Lateral Impact Response of Elliptical Hollow and Partially Concrete-Filled Cold-Formed Steel Columns Under Static Axial Compression Load

In recent years, the use of partially concrete-filled steel tubular (PCFST) columns has been considered due to their cost-effectiveness and reduction of structural weight in bridge piers and building columns. One of the critical discussions about these columns is their impact resistance. In this article, the dynamic response of hollow and PCFST columns with elliptical cross-section under simultaneous loading of static axial compressive load and lateral impact load is presented using finite element modeling in ABAQUS software (FEA). To ensure the accuracy of the numerical modeling, the analysis results are compared with the results of previous works. The effects of different parameters such as impact velocity, the height of the impact location, the impact direction, the impact block mass, the size and shape of the impact block are investigated in this paper. The results of the numerical analysis showed that the partially filled specimens had better performance than the hollow specimens. The changes in impact direction and impact block mass parameters have a significant effect on the failure of the columns, especially when they are under high impact velocity. Changing the impact velocity significantly affects the impact resistance of specimens. However, the size and shape of the impact block did not have a significant effect on the displacement of the column against the impact loading.

Study on the Compression Effect of Clothing on the Physiological Response of the Athlete

The study aimed to analyze whether the high compression of unique, tight-fitting sportswear influences the clothing physiology comfort of the athlete. Three specific sportswear with different compression were tested on four subjects while they were running on a treadmill with increasing intensity. The compression effect of the sportswear on the body of the test persons, the temperature distribution of the subjects, and the intensity of their perspiration during running were determined. The results indicate that the compression effect exerted by the garments significantly influences the clothing physiology comfort of the athlete; a higher compression load leads to more intense sweating and higher skin temperature.

Development and investigation of the applicability of computed tomography data-based modelling technique for polymeric high-density foams

As foams have become very important in several areas and since characterizing their properties is a crucial task, a finite element simulation model for high-density closed cell foams based on computed tomography (CT) measurements is developed. The model includes realistic microstructural features like cell size distribution due to the utilization of CT data. Moreover, a ‘skin-core-skin’ microstructure resulting from the manufacturing process (injection moulding) of the foams is also considered in the model. The mechanical behaviour of the foam’s core layer under tension and compression load is characterized based on the microstructural model to develop constitutive material models of the foam. These constitutive models enable further mechanical characterization of the foam with less computational effort. Compression and bending test simulations of injection moulded foams with three different densities are validated with corresponding experimental results. Thus, conclusions can be drawn regarding the reliability, applicability and possible further extensions of the high-density foam model.

Enhancement of Straw Bale Performance Using Gum Arabic

Background: The negative impacts of the construction industry are compelling arguments for embracing technology that contributes to carbon footprint reduction and resources conservation. Toward the achievement of objective 9 of the Sustainable Development Goals, the development of new building’s materials like straw bale has advanced in the construction industry. As demonstrated in the literature, straw bale is an eco-friendly material that presents many advantages, like its contribution towards a circular economy. However, it has low compressive strength and displays high displacement under compression load. So far, no attempt has been made in order to enhance the strength of straw bales. Objective: This study aimed to develop alternative material to straw bale using chopped straw stems mixed with a binder (gum Arabic) and determine its stress-strain characteristic. Methods: The manufacturing process of the new material involved the use of chopped straw and gum Arabic to form straw blocks. Results: Results obtained show that the compressive strength of straw block (1.25MPa) is greater than the strength of straw bale (0.02MPa). Also, the average displacement recorded during compression load on straw blocks (29mm) was 2.8 times smaller than the displacement in straw bale (80mm). In terms of shape and size, straw blocks match with conventional materials like cement or compressed block. This will facilitate their use in construction compared to straw bales that require skilled laborers for pre-compression and plastering. Conclusion: The use of gum arabic helps in holding straw stems together and forms a compact material with improved strength compared to straw bale. Performance improvement of the characteristics of load-bearing straw bale walls can be addressed by using straw blocks.

Zirconia vs. Titanium Dental Implants: Primary Stability In-Vitro Analysis

The present experimental trial uses two types of dental implants, one made of titanium (Ti6Al4V) and the other one of zirconia (ZrO2), but both of identical design, to compare their stability and micro-movements values under load. One of each type of implant (n = 42) was placed into 21 cow ribs, recording the insertion torque and the resonance frequency using a specific transducer. Subsequently, a prosthetic crown made of PMMA was screwed onto each of the implants in the sample. They were then subjected to a static compression load on the vestibular cusp of the crown. The resulting micromovements were measured. The zirconia implants obtained a higher mean of both IT and RFA when compared with those of titanium, with statistically significant differences in both cases (p = 0.0483 and p = 0.0296). However, the micromovement values when load was applied were very similar for both types, with the differences between them (p = 0.3867) not found to be statistically significant. The results show that zirconia implants have higher implant stability values than titanium implants. However, the fact that there are no differences in micromobility values implies that caution should be exercised when applying clinical protocols for zirconia based on RFA, which only has evidence for titanium.

STRENGTH OF SHIPS’ GRILLAGES UNDER LATERAL LOAD AND IN-PLANE COMPRESSION

The paper deals with strength of a grillage loaded by lateral load and in-plane compression load (in one direction). It consists of a system of prismatic girders crossing under 90°. The compression load is taken by the longitudinal girders that are elastically fixed on rigid supports. The system of aggregated differential equations is derived for solution of the problem using the Lagrange method. It allows for replacement of the system of aggregated differential equations by a system of independent differential equations. These equations for the case of simultaneous action of lateral and longitudinal compression load have the form of differential equations for bending of prismatic girders laying on elastic foundation and loaded with lateral and longitudinal compression forces. When only lateral load exists, the form of these equations coincides with the form of differential equations for bending of girders laying on elastic foundation and loaded with lateral load alone. When only longitudinal compression load exists, the form of these equations coincides with the form of differential equations for buckling of girders laying on elastic foundation. Solutions are given for bending of a grillage (the first two problems). Formulas are derived for calculation of the parameters of longitudinal girders’ bending when girders’ end sections are elastically fixed. Also, formulas are derived for calculation of the reaction forces at cross-points of transverse and longitudinal girders. When only longitudinal compression load exists (third problem), a solution is given for the connection between the coefficient of elastic foundation’s rigidity and the Euler force. Results obtained by using the proposed method are compared with FEA simulations.

A Novel Methodology for Calculating Crack Opening Stress under Tension-Compression Cyclic Load

Crack closure model has been used in several applications on the prediction of fatigue crack growth life, with expression of crack opening stress often serving as milestones. A typical difficulty in calculating the crack opening stress is the phenomenon of crack closure caused by the compressive load effect. Compressive load effect, resulting in the change of residual stress status at the unloading stage and the decrease of crack opening stress, is a long-term challenge for predicting fatigue crack growth life. We propose the expression of crack opening stress to predict fatigue crack growth life based on the analysis of compact tensile specimen with elastoplastic element method. It combines the characteristics of material and load to deal with the phenomenon of crack closure and uses stress ratio and normalized maximum applied load variable to construct the expression of crack opening stress. In the study of tensile-compression fatigue crack growth experiments, the proposed expression is proved to improve, by comparative analysis, the predictive ability on the whole range of experiment data. The novel expression is accurate and simple. Consequently, it is conducive to calculate the crack opening stress under tension-compression load.
