Abstract Among the different commercially used Aluminum (Al) alloys, the 7000 series offers some of the highest mechanical properties making them the material of choice for several critical engineering applications. These Al alloys often required to undergo a heat treatment (HT) process to enhance their mechanical and metallurgical properties to the desired levels. Currently, there is a growing need to find the optimal operational parameters for the HT process of Al 7000 series alloys. The operators have to resort to a start/stop approach, while intermittently evaluating and testing the mechanical properties until the desired level is reached. Among the various steps, aging is the final and often the longest step in the HT process. Consequently, the age soak time parameter needs to be narrowed to the smallest possible operating range for industrial applications. This study aims to experimentally optimize the age soak time of Al 7000 series alloys (7050-T74 and 7075-T73) by measuring its hardness, electrical conductivity (EC), fatigue properties. The study found that the optimal age soak times for 7050-T74 and 7075-T73 Al alloys are between 24–27 hours and 22–24 hours, respectively. The results of the study are subsequently confirmed using the grain flow and grain direction analysis. The results of this study are crucial in extending the applications of Al 7000 series alloys in several critical engineering industries.

This paper focuses on the mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and fatigue performance of ultra-fine-grained (UFG) Al-Mg-Si wires processed by a complex severe plastic deformation route. It is shown that the nanostructural design via equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) Conform followed by heat treatment and cold drawing leads to the combination of enhanced tensile strength, sufficient ductility, enhanced electrical conductivity, and improved fatigue strength compared to the wires after traditional T81 thermo-mechanical treatment used in wire manufacturing. The Processing-microstructure-properties relationship in the studied material is discussed.

Titanium additions are often used for boron factor and primary austenite grain size control in boron high- and ultra-high-strength alloys. Due to the risk of formation of coarse TiN during solidification the addition of titanium is limited in respect to nitrogen. The risk of coarse nitrides working as non-metallic inclusions formed in the last solidification front can degrade fatigue properties and weldability of the final product. In the presented study three microalloying systems with minor additions were tested, two without any titanium addition, to evaluate grain size evolution and mechanical properties with pre-defined as-cast, hot forging, hot rolling, and off-line heat-treatment strategy to meet demands for S1100QL steel. Microstructure evolution from hot-forged to final martensitic microstructure was observed, continuous cooling transformation diagrams of non-deformed austenite were constructed for off-line heat treatment, and the mechanical properties of Nb and V–Nb were compared to Ti–Nb microalloying system with a limited titanium addition. Using the parameters in the laboratory environment all three micro-alloying systems can provide needed mechanical properties, especially the Ti–Nb system can be successfully replaced with V–Nb having the highest response in tensile properties and still obtaining satisfying toughness of 27 J at –40 °C using Charpy V-notch samples.

Abstract Additive Manufacturing processes are considered advanced manufacturing methods. It would be possible to produce complex shape components from a Computer-Aided Design model in a layer-by-layer manner. Lattice structures as one of the complex geometries could attract lots of attention for both medical and industrial applications. In these structures, besides cell size and cell type, the microstructure of lattice structures can play a key role in these structures' mechanical performance. On the other hand, heat treatment has a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the material. Therefore, in this work, the effect of the heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of Ti-6Al-4V lattice structures manufactured by EBM was analyzed. The main mechanical properties were compared with the Ashby and Gibson model. It is very interesting to notice that a more homogeneous failure mode was found for the heat-treated samples. The structures' relative density was the main factor influencing their mechanical performance of the heat-treated samples. It is also found that the heat treatments were able to preserve the stiffness and the compressive strength of the lattice structures. Besides, an increment of both the elongation at failure and the absorbed energy was obtained after the heat treatments. Microstructure analysis of the heat-treated samples confirms the increment of ductility of the heat-treated samples with respect to the as-built one.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is an alternative method to join aluminum (Al) alloys in a solid-state condition. However, the coarsening or dissolution of precipitation hardening phases in the welding zone causes strength reduction or softening behavior in the welded area of age-hardened Al alloys. Therefore, this research aimed to improve the mechanical properties of an FSW Al–Mg–Si alloy via post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and the possibility of controlling the abnormal grain growth (AGG) using different welding parameters. FSW was performed with different rotational and travel speeds, and T6 heat treatment was carried out on the FSW samples as the PWHT. The results showed a decrease in the strength of the FSW samples compared with that of the base material (BM) due to the dissolution of precipitation hardening particles in the heat-affected zone. However, the emergence of AGG in the microstructure after the T6-PWHT was identified as the potential event in the microstructure of the PWHT samples. It is found that the AGG of the microstructure in similar joints of Al6061(T6) was governed by the welding parameters. The results proved that PWHT was able to increase the tensile properties of the welded samples to values comparable to that of Al6061(T6)-BM. The increased mechanical properties of the FSW joints were attributed to a proper PWHT that resulted in a homogeneous distribution of the precipitation hardening phases in the welding zones.

The microstructures of Ti6Al4V are complex and strongly affect its mechanical properties and fatigue behavior. This paper investigates the role of microstructure on mechanical and fatigue properties of thin-section Ti6Al4V sheets, with the aim of reviewing the effects of microstructure on fatigue properties where suboptimal microstructures might result following heat treatment of assemblies that may not be suited to further annealing, for example, following laser welding. Samples of Ti6Al4V sheet were subjected to a range of heat treatments, including annealing and water quenching from temperatures ranging from 650°C to 1050°C. Micrographs of these samples were inspected for microstructure, and hardness, 0.2% proof stress, elongation, and fracture strength were measured and attributed back to microstructure. Fractography was used to support the findings from microstructure and mechanical analyses. The strength ranking from high to low for the microstructures of thin Ti6Al4V sheets observed in this study is as follows: acicularα′martensite, Widmanstätten, bimodal, and equiaxed microstructure. The fatigue strength ranking from high to low is as follows: equiaxed, bimodal, Widmanstätten, and acicularα′martensite microstructure.

Most heat treatment simulations of precipitation-hardenable aluminum alloys are incomplete or restricted to sub-steps of the process chain. In general, the studies addressing the heat treatment of aluminum components have only provided a qualitative guidance of heat treatment, which does not match the heat treatment that is necessary for specific parts with specific requirements. Thus, a quick and accurate simulation of the whole heat treatment process would hold great economic benefit for industrial applications in predicting suitable heat treatment processes that are able to meet the required mechanical properties of proposed novel aluminum components. In this paper, the development of a time and cost efficient method for generating such prediction models is presented by means of an example aluminum alloy EN AW-6082. During the process sub-steps of solution annealing, quenching and aging, the time-temperature correlations connected to the precipitation-hardening conditions were analyzed. The precision of the prediction model depends on the size of the material database, which should be able to be adjusted to the individual requirements of the simulation user. In order to obtain the greatest time and cost efficiency in generating such a model, a specific experimental design was developed. The results of the method development are presented and discussed.

Electrical conductivity, tensile strength and micro-hardness of Cu-3.5wt.%Ti-0.1wt.%Zr-RE alloy were investigated after optimizing technics of plastic deformation and the heat treatment. The results show that good combination of the physical and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength 1160 MPa, micro-hardness 335 Hv and electrical conductivity 15 IACS% can be obtained on peak aging at 420°C for 7 h. Maximum strength was associated with the precipitation of metastable, ordered and coherent β/ (Cu4Ti) phase on peak aging. Then the strength decreased due to the precipitation of β (Cu3Ti) phase in alloys overaged.

Abstract The article presents the analysis of properties of the high-strength AlZnMgCu (abbr AlZn) aluminium alloy and estimates possibilities of its application for responsible structures with reduced weight as an alternative to iron alloy castings. The aim of the conducted studies was to develop and select the best heat treatment regime for a 7xx casting alloy based on high-strength materials for plastic working from the 7xxx series. For analysis, wrought AlZnMgCu alloy (7075) was selected. Its potential of the estimated as-cast mechanical properties indicates a broad spectrum of possible applications for automotive parts and in the armaments industry. The resulting tensile and fatigue properties support the thesis adopted, while the design works further confirm these assumptions.
