Maglev High Speed Rail Along the Northeast Corridor

This paper summarizes parts of a feasibility study prepared by the Maryland Transit Administration for the Federal Railroad Administration on a proposed magnetically levitated train project.1 Initially the project would connect Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore with Union Station in Washington DC with a stop at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Ultimately, it is proposed to extend the Project along the U.S. eastern seaboard north through Philadelphia and New York to Boston and south through Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte in North Carolina. The paper contains an evaluation of potential air travel reduction along the east coast if maglev service were available and a comparison of energy consumption between maglev and conventional modes of travel. Finally, the paper contains estimates of reductions in carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions resulting from diversions of travel from autos and aircraft to the proposed maglev service along the eastern seaboard.

Abstract A description is provided for Ustilago syntherismae. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Digitaria spp., including D. filiformis, D. ischaemum, D. sanguinalis. DISEASE: Loose smut of Digitaria. Infection sometimes dwarfs the host and causes it to branch more profusely than usual (36, 657); it is also reported that vegetative vigour is much prolonged in infected plants compared with uninfected (30, 432). Surface contamination by the large number of ustilospores when shed may result in some discolouration of the entire inflorescence including sheaths and leaf blades. Air travel routes and high speed rail connection between Milan and Rome after the Alitalia crisis This paper analyses the first available data about changes in passenger traffic and air/rail fares after the Alitalia crisis and the substantial reduction of the travel time between Milan and Rome, due to the improvement of high speed rail on this connection. As recently happened in similar cases within Europe, the rail has gained a significant share of traffic previously attracted by air transport services. Apart from that, a real price competition is prevented by a number of inefficiencies which are mainly due to the monopolistic position of the new Alitalia on the route Milan Linate-Rome Fiumicino and problems of accessibility affecting our airports, and partly our rail stations too. The role of the various authorities potentially involved is burdened, in the last instance, by infrastructural deficiencies.

This study examines the characteristics of the members in the most popular Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Professional (GISP) certification program in the United States as well as the spatial patterns of the certified GISPs. The results show that the majority of GISPs (97.3%) are located in urban areas. About 75% of the GISPs are male. Among all the GISPs, 3971 GISPs (43.3%) play a managerial role, while 4983 individuals (54.5%) assume a non-administrative role. Among the GISPs with a non-administrative role, 348 GISPs (7%) fall within the GIS Developer group, 3392 GISPs (68%) belong to the GIS Analyst group, and 1243 GISPs (25%) play other roles. Additionally, in our analysis of spatial patterns, we identified two hotspots and two coldspots. The first hotspot is centered around Idaho and Wyoming, while the second hotspot includes Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland. One coldspot is along Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana in the central U.S., while the other coldspot includes states such as Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York on the east coast. The information presented in this study can help GIS educators and practitioners develop a better understanding of the current state of this certification program in the U.S and shed light on how to further improve the GISP certification program.
