Measurement of Large Flow Angles With Non-Nulling Multi-Hole Pressure Probes

In complex flow fields, the steady-state, three-dimensional attributes can be measured intrusively using a multi-hole pressure probe. These probes are built to be as small as possible to minimize flow disturbance, but the small size makes them susceptible to both manufacturing tolerances and fouling. As such, each probe must be calibrated on a regular basis and care must be taken to ensure that the geometry is not disturbed. The probes are operated in either “nulling” or “non-nulling” modes, the latter being the simpler of the two in terms of experimental setup and mechanical fixturing. This has made non-nulling mode the preferred choice for many years; however, non-nulling mode necessitates complete three-dimensional calibration data. Sector-based calibration strategies have become nearly universal, although improvement efforts continue. This paper presents a new calibration and data analysis strategy that gives shorter calibration times and more robust data reduction.

The miniature multi-hole pneumatic pressure probe is widely regarded as a cost-effective, easy-to-use and accurate method for performing two- or three-dimensional flow field measurements in turbomachinery. The major downside to the use of these probes is that the influence of fabrication imperfections on probe characteristics necessitates an extensive and highly time-intensive and, therefore, costly calibration of each individual probe. Unless these probes can be fabricated to such standards that make individual probe calibrations superfluous, the only way to significantly reduce the time and costs associated with probe calibration is to shorten the calibration process. The latter is only possible if all essential information can be obtained from less calibration data. This paper describes a novel approach to the calibration of a series of multi-hole pressure probes in which advanced computational methods are used to make this possible. By exploiting the key features of a probe’s characteristic this approach requires only a fraction of the size of a conventional calibration database for the accurate modeling of the relationships between port pressures and flow conditions. As a result, calibration time and costs can be reduced without the sacrifice of quality.

The probe is of the steady state four hole cobra probe type. The design manufacture and calibration of the probe is described. CFD calculations have been undertaken in order to assess the feasability of using such a probe in the high speed compressor environment where space is limited. This includes effects of mounting the probe in close proximity to the downstream stator blades and whether it is necessary to adjust the calibration data to compensate for these effects.

Enhanced heat transfer characteristics of low Reynolds number airflows in three-dimensional sinusoidal wavy plate-fin channels are investigated. For the computational simulation, steady state, constant property, periodically developed, laminar forced convection is considered with the channel surface at the uniform heat flux condition; the wavy-fin is modeled by its two asymptotic limits of 100% and zero fin efficiency. The governing equations are solved numerically using finite-volume techniques for a non-orthogonal, non-staggered grid. Computational results for velocity and temperature distribution, isothermal Fanning friction factor f and Colburn factor j are presented for airflow rates in the range of 10 ≤ Re ≤ 1500. The numerical results are further compared with experimental data, with excellent agreement, for two different wavy-fin geometries. The influence of fin density on the flow behavior and the enhanced convection heat transfer are highlighted. Depending on the flow rate, a complex flow structure is observed, which is characterized by the generation, spatial growth and dissipation of vortices in the trough region of the wavy channel. The thermal boundary layers on the fin surface are periodically disrupted, resulting in high local heat fluxes. The overall heat transfer performance is improved considerably, compared to the straight channel with the same cross-section, with a relatively smaller increase in the associated pressure drop penalty.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the three-dimensional flow downstream of a linear turbine cascade at off-design conditions. The tests have been carried out for five incidence angles from −60 to +35 degrees, and for three pitch-chord ratios: s/c = 0.58,0.73,0.87. Data include blade pressure distributions, oil flow visualizations, and pressure probe measurements. The secondary flow field has been obtained by traversing a miniature five hole probe in a plane located at 50% of an axial chord downstream of the trailing edge. The distributions of local energy loss coefficients, together with vorticity and secondary velocity plots show in detail how much the secondary flow field is modified both by incidence and cascade solidity variations. The level of secondary vorticity and the intensity of the crossflow at the endwall have been found to be strictly related to the blade loading occurring in the blade entrance region. Heavy changes occur in the spanwise distributions of the pitch averaged loss and of the deviation angle, when incidence or pitch-chord ratio is varied.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow field in a high-pressure transonic turbine with a downstream vane row (1.5 stage machine) concerning the airfoil indexing. The objective is a detailed analysis of the three-dimensional aerodynamics of the second vane for different clocking positions. To give an overview of the time-averaged flow field, five-hole probe measurements were performed upstream and downstream of the second stator. Furthermore in these planes additional unsteady measurements were carried out with laser Doppler velocimetry in order to record rotor phase-resolved velocity, flow angle, and turbulence distributions at two different clocking positions. In the planes upstream of the second vane, the time-resolved pressure field has been measured by means of a fast response aerodynamic pressure probe. This paper shows that the secondary flows of the second vane are significantly modified by the different clocking positions, in connection with the first vane modulation of the rotor secondary flows. An analysis of the performance of the second vane is also carried out, and a 0.6% variation in the second vane loss coefficient has been recorded among the different clocking positions.
