Performance of a Multi-Cell MgCl2/NH3 Thermo-Chemical Battery During Recharge and Operation

The development of thermal energy storage technologies to match sustainable energy production is of interest. A prototype of a multi-cell thermochemical battery consisting of connected cells containing MgCl2 salt, and additional air-cooled or air-heated cells containing liquid ammonia of varying quality, was constructed and tested. Each of the 17 cells contained thermocouple probes at three different axial locations within the cylindrical cells. Heat transfer rates, pressures, and ammonia condensation and vaporization rates were measured. Three tests were run. In the first test, the hot bed containing 10 cells was heated using cartridge heaters, driving vaporous ammonia from the salt phase once sufficient salt temperatures were reached. The evolved gaseous ammonia was condensed in an additional 7 empty air-cooled cells. Once the recharging cycle was complete, a valve in the ammonia vapor line connecting the cold and hot beds was closed, allowing indefinite storage of cooling or heating capacity. The second operational test involved the opening of the valve while simultaneous air-cooling the hot bed cells and air-heating the cold bed cells. Heating rates and cooling rates to/from air forced through the hot bed and cold bed, respectively, were monitored to gauge HVAC performance. The second recharge was performed by using a air/air heat exchanger that captured waste heat from an automobile engine exhaust manifold and transferred it to air that was re-circulated through the hot bed array. Temperatures, pressures, heating rates, cooling rates, and cell array heat transfer specifications are reported.

Intermittency of sustainable energy or waste heat availability calls for energy storage systems such as thermal batteries. Thermochemical batteries based on a reversible solid–gas (MgCl2–NH3) reactions and NH3 liquid–gas phase change are of specific interest since the kinetics of absorption are fast and the heat transfer rates for liquid–vapor phase change are high. Thus, a thermochemical battery based on reversible reaction between magnesium chloride and ammonia was studied. Two-dimensional experimental studies were conducted on a reactor in which temperature profiles within the solid matrix and pressure and flow rates of gas were obtained during discharging processes. A numerical model based on heat and mass transfer within the salt and salt–gas reactions was developed to simulate the NH3 absorption processes within the solid matrix, and the results were compared with experimental data to determine dominant heat and mass transfer processes within the salt. It is shown that for high permeability salt beds, the reactor uniformly adsorbs gaseous ammonia until the bed reaches the equilibrium temperature, then adsorbs gas near the cooled boundaries as the reaction front moves inward. In that mode, the heat transfer is the dominant factor in determining reaction rates.

Waste heat recovery from flue gas based on water vapor condensation is an important issue as the waste heat recovery significantly increases the efficiency of the thermal power units. General principles for designing of this type of heat exchangers are known rather well; however, investigations of the local characteristics necessary for the optimization of those heat exchangers are very limited. Investigations of water vapor condensation from biofuel flue gas in the model of a vertical condensing heat exchanger were performed without and with water injection into a calorimetric tube. During the base-case investigations, no water was injected into the calorimetric tube. The results showed that the humidity and the temperature of inlet flue gas have a significant effect on the local and average heat transfer. For some regimes, the initial part of the condensing heat exchanger was not effective in terms of heat transfer because there the flue gas was cooled by convection until its temperature reached the dew point temperature. The results also showed that, at higher Reynolds numbers, there was an increase in the length of the convection prevailing region. After that region, a sudden increase was observed in heat transfer due to water vapor condensation.

Compact, liquid cooled heat sinks are used in applications where high heat fluxes and boundary resistance preclude the use of more traditional air cooling techniques. Four different liquid cooled heat sink designs, whose core geometry is formed by overlapped ribbed plates, are examined. The objective of this analysis is to develop models that can be used as design tools for the prediction of overall heat transfer and pressure drop of heat sinks. Models are validated for Reynolds numbers between 300 and 5000 using experimental tests. The agreement between the experiments and the models ranges from 2.35% to 15.3% RMS.

In order to fully understand the energy and exergy transfer processes in sinter vertical coolers, a simulation model of the fluid flow and heat transfer in a vertical cooler was established, and energy and exergy efficiency analyses of the gas–solid heat transfer in a vertical cooler were conducted in detail. Based on the calculation method of the whole working condition, the suitable operational parameters of the vertical cooler were obtained by setting the net exergy efficiency in the vertical cooler as the indicator function. The results show that both the quantity of sinter waste heat recovery (SWHR) and energy efficiency increased as the air flow rate (AFR) increased, and they decreased as the air inlet temperature (AIT) increased. The increase in the sinter inlet temperature (SIT) resulted in an increase in the quantity of SWHR and a decrease in energy efficiency. The air net exergy had the maximum value as the AFR increased, and it only increased monotonically as the SIT and AIT increased. The net exergy efficiency reached the maximum value as the AFR and AIT increased, and the increase in the SIT only resulted in a decrease in the net exergy efficiency. When the sinter annual production of a 360 m2 sintering machine was taken as the processing capacity of the vertical cooler, the suitable operational parameters of the vertical cooler were 190 kg/s for the AFR, and 353 K for the AIT.

ABSTRACTWe examined a working hypothesis of sticky thermoelectric (TE) materials, which is inversely designed to mass-produce flexible TE sheets with lamination or roll-to-roll processes without electric conductive adhesives. Herein, we prepared p-type and n-type sticky TE materials via mixing antimony and bismuth powders with low-volatilizable organic solvents to achieve a low thermal conductivity. Since the sticky TE materials are additionally injected into punched polymer sheets to contact with the upper and bottom electrodes in the fabrication process, the sticky TE modules of ca. 2.4 mm in thickness maintained temperature differences of ca. 10°C and 40°C on a hot plate of 40 °C and 120°C under a natural-air cooling condition with a fin. In the single-cell resistance analysis, we found that 75∼150-µm bismuth powder shows lower resistance than the smaller-sized one due to the fewer number of particle-particle interfaces in the electric pass between the upper and bottom electrodes. After adjusting the printed wiring pattern for the upper and bottom electrodes, we achieved 42 mV on a hot plate (120°C) with the 6 x 6 module having 212 Ω in the total resistance. In addition to the possibility of mass production at a reasonable cost, the sticky TE materials provide a low thermal conductivity for flexible TE modules to capture low-temperature waste heat under natural-air cooling conditions with fins for the purpose of energy harvesting.

Micro fluidics devices are conventionally used for boundary layer control in many aerospace applications. Synthetic Jets are intense small scale turbulent jets formed from entrainment and expulsion of the fluid in which they are embedded. The idea of using synthetic jets in confined electronic cooling applications started in late 1990s. These micro fluidic devices offer very efficient, high magnitude direct air-cooling on the heated surface. A proprietary synthetic jet designed in General Electric Company was able to provide a maximum air velocity of 90 m/s from a 1.2 mm hydraulic diameter rectangular orifice. An experimental study for determining the thermal performance of a meso scale synthetic jet was carried out. The synthetic jets are driven by a time harmonic signal. During the experiments, the operating frequency for jets was set between 3 and 4.5 kHz. The resonance frequency for a particular jet was determined through the effect on the exit velocity magnitude. An infrared thermal imaging technique was used to acquire fine scale temperature measurements. A square heater with a surface area of 156 mm2 was used to mimic the hot component and extensive temperature maps were obtained. The parameters varied during the experiments were jet location, driving jet voltage, driving jet frequency and heater power. The output parameters were point wise temperatures (pixel size = 30 μm), and heat transfer enhancement over natural convection. A maximum of approximately 8 times enhancement over natural convection heat transfer was measured. The maximum coefficient of cooling performance obtained was approximately 6.6 due to the low power consumption of the synthetic jets.

The Crude Preheat Train (CPT) is a set of large heat exchangers which recover the waste heat from product streams back to preheat the crude oil. The overall heat transfer coefficient in these heat exchangers may be significantly reduced due to fouling. One of the major impacts of fouling in CPT operation is the reduced heat transfer efficiency. The objective of this paper is to develop a predictive model using statistical methods which can a priori predict the rate of the fouling and the decrease in heat transfer efficiency in a heat exchanger in a crude preheat train. This predictive model will then be integrated into a preventive maintenance diagnostic tool to plan the cleaning of the heat exchanger to remove the fouling and bring back the heat exchanger efficiency to their peak values. The fouling model was developed using historical plant operating data and is based on Neural Network. Results show that the predictive model is able to predict the shell and tube outlet temperatures with excellent accuracy, where the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) obtained is less than 1%, correlation coefficient R2 of approximately 0.98 and Correct Directional Change (CDC) values of more than 90%. A preliminary case study shows promising indication that the predictive model may be integrated into a preventive maintenance scheduling for the heat exchanger cleaning.

Abstract In order to explore the fluid flow and heat transfer features of supercritical fluids used in Brayton cycle for waste-heat utilization of marine gas turbines, the effects of ocean rolling motion on thermo-fluidic characteristics of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) in a circular tube are computationally investigated based on a verified turbulence model. It can be found that at a given rolling period, compared to that under static condition, the time-averaged heat transfer capacity is improved by 7.9%, but the onset of the heat transfer recovery is delayed so that the range of the heat transfer deterioration becomes widened. Under the action of the inertial forces, the heat exchange between cooler/denser and warmer/lighter fluids is enhanced, a secondary circulation formed at t/tc = 0.325 and the maximum improvement of section-averaged heat transfer coefficient is 71% at this time. For various periods, the variation trend of time-averaged heat transfer coefficient for SCO2 shows a parabolic, which is distinguishing from conventional fluids. A polarization phenomenon for instantaneous thermal performance can be observed under severe rolling. With rise of the layout height, the time-average heat transfer performance of tube increases monotonously, and the maximum increment is 10.64% in study range.

Thermal analysis of forced air cooling of an electronic component is modeled as a two-dimensional conjugate heat transfer problem. The velocity field in a constricted channel is first computed. Then, for a typical electronic module, the energy equation is solved with allowance for discontinuities in the thermal conductivity. Variation of the maximum temperature with the average air velocity is presented. The importance of our approach in evaluating possible benefits due to changes in component design and the limitations of the two-dimensional model are discussed.
