Design, Manufacturing and Testing of an Aperture Mechanism for a Solar Reactor

This study presents the test results of our variable aperture mechanism which allows a solar reactor to dynamically respond to the changes in incoming solar radiation. Virtual prototyping was used to check the control system implemented, while experimental testing helped us to identify the drawbacks of the mechanism and the loop holes in the control system. A comparison of variable aperture verses fixed aperture is given to show the benefits of this mechanism. Numerical methods such as Euler and the trapezoidal rule were used in modeling. Tests results show that varying aperture size saves 2.2% energy during a cloudy day and 0.3% on a sunny day. The results from these experiments have also shown that there is a slight deviation of the aperture blades from their required position (by ±0.5 mm to ±1 mm). But overall, the combination of the control system and the selected hardware along with the aperture assembly responded to the changes successfully. The results of our experimental findings and theoretical calculations showed that this variable aperture concept is able to provide more stable internal temperature inside a solar reactor compared to fixed aperture concepts.

The elevation detection accuracy of the laser receiver in the laser levelling control system directly affects land-levelling operations. To effectively improve the effect of levelling operations and meet the requirements for the accuracy of elevation detection in different industries, this study optimization designed a multilevel adjustable laser receiver. First, we examined the laser signal detection technology and processing circuit, designed the photoelectric conversion array for the detection of the rotating laser, and converted it into a photocurrent signal. We also designed the filter, amplifier, and shaping and stretching circuits for analogue-to-digital conversion of the photocurrent signal. The digital signal was calculated based on the deviation of the elevation by using a microprocessor and was output by a controller area network (CAN) bus. The laser beam spot diameter transmission and diffusion were then studied, and with the detectable spot diameters were compared and analyzed. Accordingly, an algorithm was proposed to calculate the deviation of laser receiver elevation. The resolution of the elevation deviation was set to ±3 mm; however, this value could be adjusted to ±6 mm, ±9 mm, ±12 mm, and ±15 mm, according to the requirements. Finally, the laser receiver was tested and analyzed, and the test results of the elevation detection accuracy showed that when the laser receiver was within a radius of 90 m, the elevation detection accuracy was within the ±3 mm range. The outcomes of the farmland-levelling test showed that the standard deviation S d of the field surface decreased from 9.54 cm before levelling to 2.42 cm after levelling, and the percentage of sampling points associated with absolute errors of ≤3 cm was 84.06%. These outcomes meet the requirements of high-standard farmland construction. The test results of concrete levelling showed that within a radius of 30 m, the standard deviation S d of the elevation adjustment of the left laser receiver was 1.389 mm, and the standard deviation S d of the elevation adjustment of the right laser receiver was 1.316 mm. Furthermore, the percentage of the sampling points associated with absolute elevation adjustment errors of ≤3 mm in the cases of the two laser receivers was 100% after levelling, whereas the standard deviation S d of the sand bed surface was 0.881 mm. Additionally, the percentage of the sampling points associated with absolute errors of ≤3 mm was 100%. This met the construction standards of the concrete industry.

An investigation was conducted to study the performance of a 150 kW microturbine generator set with twin rotating disk regenerators, including testing and analyses. Originally designed as a vehicular microturbine engine, twin rotating ceramic disk regenerators were used to dramatically improve fuel consumption by transferring heat energy from the exhaust gas stream to compressor discharge. This microturbine engine consists of a gasifier assembly, a power turbine, a combustor, a regenerator system, a reduction and accessory drive gearbox, and a fuel management system. Because the microturbine engine did not come with the necessary start and control system (including electronic engine control unit), a start sequence was successfully developed and a manual control system installed. This paper reports on testing of the microturbine generator set at different load conditions using load banks. As a parallel effort, a software program was used to predict the performance of the microturbine generator set at different operating conditions in order to compare with the test results.

This paper deals with a new state-constrained control (SCC) system of vehicle, which includes a multi-layer controller, in order to ensure the vehicle’s lateral stability and steering performance under complex environment. In this system, a new constraint control strategy with input and state constraints is applied to calculate the steady-state yaw moment. It ensures the vehicle lateral stability by tracking the desired yaw rate value and limiting the allowable range of the side slip. Through the linkage of the three-layer controller, the tire load is optimized and achieve minimal vehicle velocity reduction. The seven-degree-of-freedom (7-DOF) simulation model was established and simulated in MATLAB to evaluate the effect of the proposed controller. Through the analysis of the simulation results, compared with the traditional ESC and integrated control, it not only solves the problem of obvious velocity reduction, but also solves the problem of high cost and high hardware requirements in integrated control. The simulation results show that designed control system has better performance of path tracking and driving state, which is closer to the desired value. Through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) practical experiments in two typical driving conditions, the effectiveness of the above proposed control system is further verified, which can improve the lateral stability and maneuverability of the vehicle.

A decentralized control structure is introduced into the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to solve the high maintenance and labor cost problem in actual engineering. Based on this new control system, a decentralized optimization method is presented for sensor fault repair and optimal group control of HVAC equipment. Convergence property of the novel method is theoretically analyzed considering both convex and nonconvex systems with constraints. In this decentralized control system, traditional device is fitted with a control chip such that it becomes a smart device. The smart device can communicate and operate collaboratively with the other devices to accomplish some designated tasks. The effectiveness of the presented method is verified by simulations and hardware tests.

In order to reduce operation risk and working intensity in mountainous orchard transportation and to realize optimized control for the mountainous orchard electric-drive monorail transportation system, a mountainous orchard electric-drive monorail transporter control system was designed and developed in this study. The system mainly consists of modules as: manual and remote control, positioning, obstacle avoidance, speed measurement, motor control, electric-magnetic break, and the position limit. The driving speed, current consumption, break control, and battery pack running ability experiments were conducted to test the control system. Results indicated that, the transporter’s driving speed is 0.60~0.58 m/s when it is running on the ground with the load weight from 0 to 100kg. This speed is little affected by the load weight. The transporter’s driving speed is 0.45~0.28 m/s when it is climbing a steep hill with an angle of 39°. That speed is critically affected by the load weight. In further improvements, a shift mechanism will be introduced so that adjustable gear ratio could be achieved thus solve the current overload problem in a full load situation.

This work reviews the innovative and progressive methods of determination and analysis of safety objectives using Vilnius A-SMGCS example. The aim of the analysis is to determine how failures in this system could affect flight safety in Vilnius aerodrome. Identified safety objectives will limit the frequency of occurrence of hazards enough for the associated risk to be acceptable, and will ensure that appropriate mitigation means are reflected subsequently as Safety Requirements for the system. Analysis reflects aspects of A-SMGCS Safety objectives, which should be taken into consideration. Santrauka Darbe apžvelgiami progresyvūs saugos tikslų analizės metodai pagal Vilniaus aerodromo automatizuotos antžeminio eismo stebėjimo ir kontrolės sistemos veiklos pavyzdį. Analizuojama, kaip šios sistemos sutrikimai gali paveikti skrydžių saugą Vilniaus aerodrome. Remiantis galimų pavojų skrydžių saugai analize, tyrime nustatyti saugos tikslai, pagal kuriuos vėliau bus numatomos riziką mažinančios priemonės (galimų pavojų neutralizavimui ar kylančios rizikos sumažinimui iki priimtino lygio). Straipsnyje pateikiami veiksniai, kuriuos reikėtų įvertinti nustatant aerodromo automatizuotos antžeminio eismo stebėjimo ir kontrolės sistemos saugos tikslus.
