A Socio-Academic Approach in Providing Renewable Energy Sources: Experiences of Mechanical Engineering Department, Mapua Institute of Technology

Mapua Institute of Technology has been constantly engaged in providing free, renewable energy to rural and under privileged communities. Guided by the mission and vision of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department and of the Office of Social Orientation and Community Involvement, the school had implemented several renewable energy activities. This paper showcases 8 different projects — 6 hydropower plant projects, 1 human kinetic harvesting demonstration facility, and 1 wind turbine project. In this paper, implemented projects are presented briefly with emphasis on the different locations, local cultural settings and different experiences encountered. It will also share how students have changed from being participants to autonomous implementers of renewable energy projects for communities.

The development of projects using renewable energy sources (RES) necessitates the development of insurance programs and systems. This involves identifying and assessing the risks of renewable energy projects in the transition to new types of energy, determining typical corporate and specific risks, the need and content of the main types, forms of insurance contracts, assessing the financial condition, and choosing insurance organizations and reinsurance programs. This article focuses on the formation of such insurance programs, their interaction with industrial safety systems and ensuring corporate participation in achieving sustainable development goals; as well as selection and assessment of the insurer financial stability and the insurance RES programs economic efficiency.

The development of today's economies is inconceivable without energy. However, fossil fuel reserves are declining, climate change is accelerating and some changes in the energy sector are needed. Renewable energy sources are a potential solution for many scientists and practitioners. However, the planning and implementation of renewable energy projects requires consideration of a number of criteria, which is why multicriteria decision-making methods are often used to evaluate renewable energy sources/technologies. Goal of this paper is to evaluate four types of renewable energy sources (photovoltaic, hydro, biomass and wind energy) in Serbia. Analytical hierarchical process and seven criteria were applied. Based on the obtained results, hydro sources are ranked the best. Also, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine whether changes in the priority of criteria would cause changes in the range of alternatives. It was found that major changes in priorities are needed for changes to occur, so it can be concluded that the results obtained are relevant.

The authors study the development of the oil and gas industry and assess the financial efficiency of the use of renewable energy sources, which determine the relevance of the research topic. The purpose of this work is to study the effectiveness of the development of the Russian energy sector and its contribution to the world economy. The main question to which this article should give an answer is that how the Russian power industry will develop in corresponding to the global trends in energy consumption. This paper uses a method for finding the parameters of the efficiency of renewable energy sources using exponential smoothing. The paper uses data from the analytical report of British Petroleum and the Bloomberg system for the period from January 2012 to December 2019. The result of the study shows an improvement in the accuracy of the predicted values, while previous models had higher standard error estimates. The novelty of the study is to achieve accurate results of the forecast of fossil-fuel consumption for 3 years ahead (the forecast accuracy is 80.5). The article concludes that while Russian oil and gas projects are very important for the Russian economy until now, renewable energy projects are more beneficial. In addition, Russia does not seem to support the global trend towards a renewable and sustainable economy. Although oil and gas prices remain acceptable, unforeseen changes in the behavior of real buyers can hinder the efficiency of the Russian economy and lead to a disruption of Russia’s economic growth if Russia does not decisively steer towards renewable energy from now on. The growth of the Russian power industry corresponds to the global trends in fossil energy consumption (while fossil prices, thus incomes keep worsening), and thus innovative solutions for enhancing renewable energies must be adopted. The article proves that many pipeline projects (South Stream, Turkish Stream, Nord Stream 2) move the Russian energy sector back to the past because they just contradict existing trends.

Renewable energy sources should play an important role in the promotion of numerous Croatian energy goals. The development of a successful sector of renewable could in the long run contribute to energy efficiency improvement, diversification of production and supply safety, domestic production and lesser imports of energy sources and significant reduction of the environmental influences. Targets and strategy of the implementation for every renewable energy resource depends on the specifics of the particular one, with general trends in the European Union of renewable resource ratio increase in the energy balance.

The article presents the need for the development of renewable energy sources due to the improvement of energy efficiency, safety, and environmental conditions; there is also a worldwide state interest in this area of development. An overview of the production of electricity from renewable energy sources in the world since 1990 is made, and it is noted that the fastest development rates are observed in the solar and wind energy development. The global market for environmental projects financing is analyzed, the instruments for renewable energy projects financing are evaluated, and the green bond market state is presented in detail. Directions for further policies aimed at encouraging increased investment in renewable energy sources are proposed.

Motivated by energy security requirements and the desire to create a sustainable and safe environment, there is a growing need to transition gradually from fossil fuels toward new and emerging energy sources. The energy solutions of the future will require a significant amount of research and development, as well as increased awareness and acceptance of new and emerging energy technologies. Creating a highly educated workforce who will contribute to overcoming future energy challenges is a key component in bringing about this transition. One method of supporting workforce development in future energy solutions is to incorporate new and emerging energy technology directly into required undergraduate coursework. To this end, renewable energy projects were developed and implemented in a required introductory thermal science course in a mechanical engineering technology curriculum. The goal of the projects was to provide students with a deeper understanding of the need for, the advantages of, and the difficulties associated with renewable energy sources. The open-ended semester-long student projects included (1) research on the history and implementation of a renewable energy source, (2) development of an experimental application of the energy source in an energy conversion process, and (3) an economic analysis of the energy source in an assumed application or case study. This paper presents the design and development of these renewable energy projects, and informal and formal evaluation of the effectiveness of the projects over two years of classroom implementation. In addition, the link between the projects and select accreditation criteria for engineering technology programs is discussed.

Abstract: Electricity production using conventional energy sources is associated with serious environmental problems like emission of pollutants, global warming and social problems. The world’s CO2 emissions are projected to rise from 29.0 billion MT in 2006 to 33.1 billion MT in 2015 and 40.4 billion MT in 2030. This increase in emissions indicates more global warming. The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been supporting programs for the development of renewable energy sources which are not only unlimited but environmentally friendly — like biomass, solar, small hydro, wind, etc. If biomass is used sustainably, there is no net carbon emission over the time of a cycle of biomass production.Waste management is an important issue today. To handle the ever growing problem of waste, residents and companies are constantly looking for the best and least expensive methods. Types of waste generated by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) include kitchen waste, municipal solid waste, sewage waste, and waste cooking oil. The construction and commissioning of renewable energy sources is one of the priority areas of energy programs aimed at achieving sustainable development goals. The creation and operation of such sources is associated with significant risks, the management of which is based on real insurance instruments. This article focuses on the formation of a model for assessing the use of insurance in renewable energy projects and presents the business process, stages, risk drivers, and calculation of the economic efficiency of the use of insurance mechanisms in renewable energy projects.
