Measurements are reported of electric contact resistance, actual area of contact, static friction, adhesion and pure shear for lead on lead. The data exhibit a statistical bifurcation of friction. In other words, below extreme pressures, statistically there are two branches of the coefficient of friction versus normal load relationship. The nature of one of the branches is explicable exclusively in terms of the weld-junction or adhesion theory of friction. The nature of the other, however, is not so explicable. This points to the existence of what Holm [1] called the Y-term of friction, the nature of which has yet to be satisfactorily explained.

The experimental investigation of reciprocating motion between the aluminum doped crumb rubber /epoxy composite and the steel ball has been carried out under Reciprocating Friction Tester, TR-282 to study the wear and coefficient of frictions using different normal loads (0.4Kg, 0.7Kgand1Kg), differentfrequencies (10Hz, 25Hz and 40Hz).The wear is a function of normal load, reciprocating frequency, reciprocating duration and the composition of the material. The percentage of aluminum presents in the composite changesbut the other components remain the same.The four types of composites are fabricated by compression molding process having 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% Al. The effect of different parameters such as normal load, reciprocating frequency and percentage of aluminum has been studied. It is observed that the wear and coefficient of friction is influenced by the parameters. The tendency of wear goes on decreasing with the increase of normal load and it is minimum for a composite having 10%aluminum at a normal load of 0.7Kg and then goes on increasing at higher loads for all types of composite due to the adhesive nature of the composite. The coefficient of friction goes on decreasing with increasing normal loads due to the formation of thin film as an effect of heat generation with normal load.

The present paper investigates experimentally effect of applied load and different velocity on the coefficient of friction between two interacting surfaces (human skin and Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW- polyethylene) at static and dynamic friction. It is possible to conclude specific point based on the above practical part and frictional analysis of this investigation as the most important mechanical phenomenon was creep has been observed a stick time interval where the static friction force is significantly increased during this stroke. The analytical model for stick-slip of skin and UHMWPE is proposed. The difference between static and kinetic friction defines the amplitude of stick-slip phenomena. The contact pressure, the sliding velocity, and rigidity of system determine the stability conditions of the movement between skin and UHMWPE. Experiments were carried out by developing a device (friction measurement). Variations of friction coefficient during the time at different normal load 4.6 and 9.2 N and low sliding velocity 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm/min were experimentally investigated. The results showed that the friction coefficient varied with the normal load and low sliding velocity. At static friction, the coefficient of friction decreased when the time increases, whereas, at dynamic friction, the coefficient of friction decreased when the time increased at normal load 4.6 and 9.2 N.

As is well known, ambient atmospheres can greatly affect the friction and wear behavior of metals sliding on each other, as well as the electric contact resistance between the metals. In order to better understand the mechanisms of those effects of ambient atmospheres, the coefficient of friction and the electric contact resistance have been studied for bundles of 50 micrometer thick copper wires, sliding on a polished copper surface in a specialized apparatus, called the hoop apparatus. The ambient gas was cycled between laboratory air and carbon dioxide, and between laboratory air and argon, respectively. The results indicate a reversible build-up and removal of surface films whose nature as well as speed of formation and removal depends on the gas present. Fiber bundles are used in order to eliminate the constriction resistance, so that the contact resistance is directly proportional to the specific film resistivity. The following properties were found to be affected by the ambient gases. (i) The average level of the contact resistance. (ii) The amplitude of the electric “noise.” (iii) The coefficient of friction. (iv) The difference between the static and the dynamic coefficients of friction in stick-slip motion. The results were found to be consistent with previous measurements in which the mechanism of forming wear particles was deduced from a wear chip analysis. Correspondingly they were interpreted in terms of the same wear model. This led to a further advance in the understanding of the interfacial processes accompanying sliding in this sample/substrate combination.

Context: The pocketing effect of helmet padding helps to dissipate forces experienced by the head, but if the player's helmet remains stationary in an opponent's shoulder pads, the compressive force on the cervical spine may increase. Objective: To (1) measure the coefficient of static friction between different football helmet finishes and football jersey fabrics and (2) calculate the potential amount of force on a player's helmet due to the amount of friction present. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Helmets with different finishes and different football jersey fabrics. Main Outcome Measure(s): The coefficient of friction was determined for 2 helmet samples (glossy and matte), 3 football jerseys (collegiate, high school, and youth), and 3 types of jersey numbers (silkscreened, sublimated, and stitched on) using the TAPPI T 815 standard method. These measurements determined which helmet-to-helmet, helmet-to-jersey number, and helmet-to-jersey material combination resulted in the least amount of static friction. Results: The glossy helmet versus glossy helmet combination produced a greater amount of static friction than the other 2 helmet combinations (P = .013). The glossy helmet versus collegiate jersey combination produced a greater amount of static friction than the other helmet-to-jersey material combinations (P < .01). The glossy helmet versus silkscreened numbers combination produced a greater amount of static friction than the other helmet-to-jersey number combinations (P < .01). Conclusions: The force of static friction experienced during collisions can be clinically relevant. Conditions with higher coefficients of static friction result in greater forces. In this study, the highest coefficient of friction (glossy helmet versus silkscreened number) could increase the forces on the player's helmet by 3553.88 N when compared with other helmet-to-jersey combinations. Our results indicate that the makeup of helmet and uniform materials may affect sport safety.

Tribological properties of several kinds of polyoxymethylene (POM) composites were evaluated for the purpose of developing a polymeric tribomaterial especially suited for mating with aluminum parts having low surface hardness. POM composites containing small amounts of silicon carbide (SiC), POM/SiC; those containing a small amount of calcium octacosanonoate besides SiC, POM/SiC/Ca-OCA; and the one blended with 24 wt % of polytetrafluoroethylene, POM/PTFE(24); were injection-molded into pin specimens and their tribological properties were tested by means of a pin-on-disk type wear apparatus using an aluminum (A5056) mating disk in comparison with a 303 stainless steel (SUS303) disk. Evaluation was focused on observation of the sliding surfaces of the pin specimens and the mating disks by a scanning electron microscope and an optical microscope together with the measurement of surface roughness. In the case of mating against a SUS303 disk having high surface hardness, all pin specimens did not roughen the disk surfaces even after long time of rubbing. Only POM/PTFE(24) composite obviously made a transfer film on the disk surface, while the other composites made an extremely thin one on it. POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite, containing SiC 0.1 wt. % and Ca-OCA 1 wt. %, was found to show the lowest coefficient of friction and the lowest wear rate forming extremely thin transfer film on the mating disk. On the other hand, against an A5056 disk which has lower surface hardness than that of SUS303 disk, unfilled POM and POM composites except POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite roughened the disk surfaces. However, the sliding surface of the A5056 disk rubbed with POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite was significantly smoother and that of the pin specimen was also quite smooth in comparison with other pin specimens. Further, when each POM composite was rubbed against the A5056 disk, formation of transfer film was not obvious on the disk surfaces. For POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite, the wear rate was the lowest of all POM composites, and the coefficient of friction was as low level as 60 percent of that of unfilled POM, but slightly higher than that of POM/PTFE(24) composite. For POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite, the nucleating effect of SiC and Ca-OCA, which accelerated the crystallization of POM during its injection molding to form a matrix containing fine spherulites, must have resulted in increasing the toughness of the matrix and lowering the wear rate. Also, the lubricant effect of Ca-OCA should have lowered the coefficient of friction of the same matrix for rubbing against aluminum mating disk. POM/SiC(0.1)/Ca-OCA(1) composite was concluded as an excellent tribomaterial for mating with aluminum parts.

Abstract The results of two-dimensional approach using real variable method to Hertz’s problem of contact of elastic bodies are presented. Both normal and tangential loads are assumed to be distributed in Hertzian fashion over the area of contact. The magnitude of the intensity of the tangential load is assumed to be linearly proportional to that of the normal load when sliding motion of the body is impending. The stresses in the elastic body due to the application of these loads on its boundary are presented in closed form for both plane-stress and plane-strain cases. A numerical value of f = 1/3 is assumed for the linear proportionality (coefficient of friction) between the tangential and normal loads in order that the distribution of stresses may be illustrated. The significance of the stress distribution, across the contact area and in the body, is also discussed. It is shown that when the combination of loads considered in the paper are applied at the contact area of bodies in contact the maximum shearing stress may be at the surface instead of beneath the surface. For example, for plane strain, if the coefficient of friction is f = 1/3, the maximum shearing stress is at the surface and is 43 per cent larger than the maximum shearing stress, which would be below the surface, that occurs when the normal force acts alone. The effect of range of normal stress and of shearing stress on the plane of maximum shear and on the plane of maximum octahedral shear on failure by progressive fracture (fatigue) is discussed.

Abstract Frictional vibrations, such as stick-slip motion and automobile-brake squeal, which occur when two solid bodies are rubbed together, are analyzed mathematically and observed experimentally. The conditions studied are slow uniform motion and relatively rapid simple harmonic motion of brake lining over a cast-iron base. The equations of motion show and the observations confirm that frictional vibrations are caused primarily by an inverse variation of coefficient of friction with sliding velocity, but their form and occurrence are greatly dependent upon the dynamical constants of the mechanical system. With a constant coefficient of friction, the vibration initiated whenever sliding begins is rapidly damped out, not by the friction but by the “natural” damping of all mechanical systems. The coefficient of friction of most brake linings and other organic materials was essentially invariant with velocity, except that the static coefficient was usually greater than the sliding coefficient. Most such materials usually showed a small decrease in coefficient with increasing temperature. The persistent vibrations resulting from the excess static friction were reduced or eliminated by treating the rubbing surfaces with polar organic compounds which produced a rising friction characteristic.

Abstract This paper deals with the problem of static and dynamic (or kinetic) friction, namely the coefficients of friction for the two states. The coefficient of static friction is well known, and its theory and practice are commonly accepted by the academia and the industry. The coefficient of kinetic friction, however, has not fully been understood. The popular theory for the kinetic friction is that the coefficient of dynamic friction is smaller than the coefficient of static friction, by comparison of the forces applied in the two states. After studying the characteristics of the coefficient of friction, it is found that the comparison is not appropriate, because the inertial force was excluded. The new discovery in the paper is that coefficients of static friction and dynamic friction are identical. Wheel “locked” in wheel braking is further used to prove the conclusion. The key to cause confusions between the two coefficients of friction is the inertial force. In the measurement of the coefficient of static friction, the inertial force is initiated as soon as the testing object starts to move. Therefore, there are two forces acting against the movement of the object, the frictional force and the inertial force. But in the measurement of the coefficient of kinetic friction, no inertial force is involved because velocity must be kept constant.

Many aspects of both grip function and tactile perception depend on complex frictional interactions occurring in the contact zone of the finger pad, which is the subject of the current review. While it is well established that friction plays a crucial role in grip function, its exact contribution for discriminatory touch involving the sliding of a finger pad is more elusive. For texture discrimination, it is clear that vibrotaction plays an important role in the discriminatory mechanisms. Among other factors, friction impacts the nature of the vibrations generated by the relative movement of the fingertip skin against a probed object. Friction also has a major influence on the perceived tactile pleasantness of a surface. The contact mechanics of a finger pad is governed by the fingerprint ridges and the sweat that is exuded from pores located on these ridges. Counterintuitively, the coefficient of friction can increase by an order of magnitude in a period of tens of seconds when in contact with an impermeably smooth surface, such as glass. In contrast, the value will decrease for a porous surface, such as paper. The increase in friction is attributed to an occlusion mechanism and can be described by first-order kinetics. Surprisingly, the sensitivity of the coefficient of friction to the normal load and sliding velocity is comparatively of second order, yet these dependencies provide the main basis of theoretical models which, to-date, largely ignore the time evolution of the frictional dynamics. One well-known effect on taction is the possibility of inducing stick–slip if the friction decreases with increasing sliding velocity. Moreover, the initial slip of a finger pad occurs by the propagation of an annulus of failure from the perimeter of the contact zone and this phenomenon could be important in tactile perception and grip function.
